Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe quickest Windows screenshot shortcut depends on what you need: press Windows + Print Screen to save the entire display as an image, Alt + Print Screen to copy only the active window, or Windows + Shift + S to select a region. A plain Print Screen press usually copies the screen to the clipboard, although Windows can be configured to open the Snipping Tool overlay instead.
This guide explains every built-in method, where each result goes, how to save or edit it, why the key sometimes behaves differently, and what to try when your keyboard has no dedicated PrtScn key.
Print Screen shortcuts at a glance
| What you want | Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Select part of the screen | Windows + Shift + S | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay. The selection is copied to the clipboard. |
| Save the entire screen directly | Windows + Print Screen | Saves an image in PicturesScreenshots. |
| Copy the active window | Alt + Print Screen | Copies only the focused window to the clipboard. |
| Copy the whole screen | Print Screen | Copies a full-screen image to the clipboard unless the key is configured to open screen snipping. |
| Use a keyboard without PrtScn | Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar | Hardware-dependent screenshot shortcut documented by Microsoft. |
Microsoft describes Print Screen defaults slightly differently across its support pages. The reliable way to know your computer’s behavior is to check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and look for Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
How to take a full-screen screenshot with Print Screen
Copy the screen and paste it somewhere
- Press Print Screen (often labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or PrtSc SysRq).
- Open Paint, Word, an email message, a chat window or another app that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the clipboard image.
- Use the destination app’s save command to create a file, or open the image in Snipping Tool for editing and saving.
A plain Print Screen capture does not necessarily create a file in File Explorer. It is an image held in the clipboard until you paste it or open it through a screenshot editor.

Save the entire screen directly to a file
- Press Windows + Print Screen. The display may briefly dim.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to Pictures > Screenshots. The capture is saved there automatically.
If your Pictures folder is redirected to OneDrive, the actual path can be under your OneDrive Pictures folder, but the Screenshots subfolder remains the destination Windows uses for this shortcut.
Capture only the active window
To avoid capturing other windows, click the window you want first, then press Alt + Print Screen. Windows copies the active window to the clipboard, so open the target app and press Ctrl + V. This is useful for documenting an error dialog or a single application without exposing the rest of your desktop. Microsoft documents this clipboard workflow in its window and screen contents guidance.
Select a region with the Snipping Tool overlay
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the toolbar appears, choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip or full-screen snip.
- Drag around the area, click the target window, or choose the full-screen option as appropriate.
- The result is copied to the clipboard. Press Ctrl + V in another app for an immediate paste.
- Select the Snipping Tool notification, if it appears, to open the editor. Annotate, crop, save or share the image from there.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover these modes for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The tool also offers video snips. Some newer capabilities, including Perfect Screenshot and Color picker, are limited to Copilot+ PCs, so their availability depends on your hardware and Windows build.
Change what the Print Screen key does
If pressing Print Screen opens a dimmed selection overlay instead of silently copying the whole screen, the screen-snipping setting is enabled.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Choose Keyboard.
- Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Turn it Off if you want Print Screen to behave as a clipboard full-screen capture. Turn it on if you prefer the selection overlay.
The setting is documented in Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference. You can still use Windows + Shift + S for selected-area captures regardless of which Print Screen preference you choose.

What happens to a screenshot after capture?
Clipboard captures
Print Screen, Alt + Print Screen and Windows + Shift + S place an image in the clipboard. Clipboard contents are temporary: copying text or another image replaces the screenshot. Paste it promptly into Paint or another compatible app, then save it in the format you need.
Saved full-screen captures
Windows + Print Screen writes the image to PicturesScreenshots. Open the file in Photos, Paint or Snipping Tool to crop, annotate, rename or convert it.
Editing and sharing
Opening the Snipping Tool notification gives you a single place to draw, highlight, crop, copy, save and share. For a quick unedited attachment, paste the clipboard image directly into your mail or chat application.
Use a keyboard without a Print Screen key
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a hardware-dependent alternative. Hold Fn and the Windows key, press Space Bar, and check whether a screenshot is produced. Compact keyboards and laptops can assign different Fn layers, so the combination may not work on every model. If it fails, consult the device maker’s keyboard instructions and use Windows + Shift + S, which does not require a dedicated Print Screen key.
Capture a menu or tooltip that disappears
Menus can close as soon as you invoke a screenshot command. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance describes opening Snipping Tool, opening the menu you need, then pressing Ctrl + PrtSc to gray the screen and select a snip. The exact behavior can vary by Windows version and installed Snipping Tool release. If that sequence is unavailable, try opening Snipping Tool first, leave it ready, open the menu, and use the tool’s capture command immediately.

Troubleshooting Print Screen problems
The key opens an overlay instead of copying the screen
Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Disable it for the traditional clipboard behavior, or keep it enabled and make your selection in the overlay.
No image file appears
Only Windows + Print Screen is the documented one-step full-screen-to-file shortcut. A plain Print Screen or Alt + Print Screen capture is in the clipboard; paste it into Paint or another app and save it. A Windows + Shift + S capture likewise needs to be pasted or opened from the Snipping Tool notification.

Ctrl + V pastes an older image
The new capture may not have completed, or another program may have replaced the clipboard. Take the screenshot again, wait for the notification or brief screen flash, and paste immediately. If necessary, open Snipping Tool from the notification and save from its editor instead.
The shortcut does nothing on a laptop
Try the laptop’s Fn modifier with Print Screen, then try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar. Keyboard manufacturers map these keys differently. Test Windows + Shift + S as a software-only fallback.
A selected window is the wrong one
Click the title bar of the target window before pressing Alt + Print Screen. For the overlay’s window mode, move the pointer over the intended window and click only when its outline is highlighted.

The screenshot is missing a menu
Use the Snipping Tool menu workflow described above, or capture a slightly larger region with Windows + Shift + S after opening the menu. Some menus close when focus changes, so prepare the tool before opening them.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
Windows shortcuts are ideal for a screen you are looking at. For automated captures of web pages, a website screenshot API can avoid launching and maintaining a browser. ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
For developers, the service includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.
Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options. A minimal cURL request is:

Frequently asked questions
Can I screenshot only one monitor?
Use the Snipping Tool’s window or rectangular mode to select the display area you need. Windows + Print Screen captures the complete screen output according to Windows’ multi-display behavior.
Are Print Screen images always PNG files?
Windows saves the shortcut’s image in its standard screenshot format. If you need another format, open the image in Paint or Photos and use Save as or Export.
Does Print Screen capture the mouse pointer?
The standard shortcuts capture the screen image, not necessarily the pointer. If the pointer must be visible, use an application or recording workflow that explicitly supports cursor capture.
Can I use these shortcuts in a remote desktop session?
Remote desktop clients can reserve or remap keyboard combinations. If a shortcut affects the local computer instead of the remote session, use the remote client’s keyboard setting or the Snipping Tool inside the remote Windows session.
