There is no single best website builder for every project. Choose by starting with what your site must do—sell products, publish content, showcase work, or bring in leads—then compare the plan features, full ongoing cost, control, and maintenance that job requires.
Start with the job your website needs to do
Use the platform categories below as a shortlist, not as a ranking. A vendor comparison from Shopify describes Shopify as commerce-oriented, WordPress as an open-source or hosted publishing option, Wix as a general builder for individuals and small businesses, Squarespace as a template and drag-and-drop option, and Webflow as a design-customizable platform. Those descriptions help narrow the field; they do not show that one platform is best for everyone. Shopify’s 2026 comparison is vendor-published, so treat its assessments as product guidance rather than independent testing.
| Platform | A plausible starting fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | A product-first online store or a business managing products, orders, and sales channels. | Confirm the required plan, payment and transaction costs, and paid apps. Consider whether a store-centric platform fits a site that is mainly informational. |
| WordPress | Publishing, content management, and a site that may need extensions. | Decide between hosted WordPress.com and open-source self-hosting. For self-hosting, account for a separate host, plugins, updates, and security maintenance. |
| Wix | A general individual or small-business site, possibly with a simple store. | Check that the needed features are in the right plan, verify regional pricing, and look for selling-related fees. |
| Squarespace | A design-led site that suits template-based creation and drag-and-drop editing. | Confirm the current plan and transaction fees, and check whether services such as scheduling or email require separate subscriptions. |
| Webflow | A design-led site where visual customization is important. | Check the learning curve, whether you need a site or ecommerce plan, item limits, transaction fees, and the annual-billing price. |
Decide how much hosting and maintenance you want
Hosted builders bundle hosting into the platform, which can reduce the number of services you manage separately. The open-source WordPress route gives you a choice of host but also makes you responsible for maintenance tasks such as security updates. WordPress.com is a hosted WordPress alternative, so distinguish it from installing and maintaining WordPress on a host you select. Shopify’s comparison discusses these different models, but the exact services and responsibilities depend on the option and plan you choose.
- Prefer a bundled setup: Start with hosted options if you want the platform provider to include hosting and avoid managing a separate server.
- Want more control: Consider self-hosted WordPress if you are prepared to choose hosting and handle maintenance or arrange for someone else to do it.
- Need a custom design workflow: Compare the design controls you will actually use against the time needed to learn and maintain them.
Check the selling model and plan limits
If the site will sell, compare the whole order flow—not just whether a platform has a store feature. Shopify describes tools for product listings, payments, shipping, fulfillment, and in-person as well as online commerce. Squarespace’s plan guidance says its plans support selling products and content, with fees and features that depend on the plan. Review the provider’s current terms for the sales model you need.

Webflow’s live pricing page lists ecommerce tiers with different item allowances and transaction fees. Its displayed ecommerce prices are in USD per site per month and billed yearly, with applicable taxes noted on the page. Check the live page for the tier that fits your catalog and sales needs; do not assume figures in an older comparison still apply. Webflow Plans & pricing.
For any platform, verify the number of products or content records allowed, payment methods, shipping and fulfillment needs, memberships or bookings, integrations, and collaborator access. A plan that looks inexpensive may not include the capabilities your selling model requires.

Work out the full cost, not just the headline price
Build a cost estimate for the exact plan and billing term you would use. Include recurring and one-time charges, and check what happens at renewal or if you change plans.
- Plan price, billing cycle, and renewal price.
- Payment-processing charges and any platform transaction fees.
- Paid apps, plugins, booking tools, email, or other separate services.
- Domain registration or renewal, and any separate hosting if you choose self-hosted WordPress.
- Whether hosting, backups, security, and support are included in the plan.
- Limits on products, storage, content, bandwidth, and collaborators that could force an upgrade.
- Export and migration support for the content and data you may need to move.
Prices and plan terms can change. Squarespace’s plan guidance, updated September 17, 2026, says plans can change, one plan applies to each site, and some related services require separate subscriptions. Squarespace directs customers to its current pricing and sales-fee information. Wix says displayed pricing varies by billing cycle and region in its platform comparison. Confirm the selected plan and terms on the provider’s current pricing or checkout pages rather than relying on a third-party price summary.

Compare SEO, accessibility, and design against your actual needs
Do not choose on a blanket claim that one builder is “best for SEO.” Compare the specific tools you need for your content structure and site management. Webflow’s pricing page lists features such as redirects, sitemap controls, and schema markup; their presence does not establish that using Webflow will produce better search rankings. None of the cited comparisons establishes a cross-platform SEO winner.
Likewise, a builder’s templates or editing interface do not by themselves guarantee an accessible site. Check the templates and published pages against your project’s accessibility requirements, and test the actual site. The cited material does not provide a like-for-like accessibility comparison across these platforms.

Use this checklist before you sign up
- Write down the site’s main purpose and required pages.
- List the functions you need: products, payments, booking, membership, integrations, or lead capture.
- Estimate the number of products or content records, and note the number of people who need access.
- Choose whether you want bundled hosting or are willing to manage a separate host and security maintenance.
- Compare the required plan features, limits, annual or monthly billing, renewal price, and fees.
- Check domain costs, separate services, and whether the content and data you care about can be exported or migrated.
- Try the design and editing workflow before building the full site, especially if the platform has a learning curve that matters to your team.
After those checks, shortlist the platforms that meet your non-negotiable requirements and compare the actual plans side by side. A category fit is a starting point; the best choice is the one whose current terms and workflow fit your project.
