The small picture beside a page title in a browser tab is called a favicon, short for “favorite icon.” A website tab icon is the everyday description; favicon is the term used in web documentation. The same site icon can also appear in bookmarks, address-bar history and other browser surfaces, while search results and device home screens may follow separate rules.
What is a website tab icon called?
A website tab icon is a favicon. MDN Web Docs defines a favicon as a tiny icon included with a website and displayed in places such as browser tabs, the address bar and bookmarks. The name comes from “favorite icon,” because browsers originally used it prominently for bookmarked sites.
“Website tab icon,” “site icon” and “browser tab icon” all describe what you see, but favicon is the useful technical search term. Use it when looking up implementation guidance, checking a browser request or discussing the asset with a developer.
Where can a favicon appear?
A favicon is associated with a website, but each display surface has its own size, format and selection behavior. One file may work in several places, yet it should not be treated as a universal specification.

How browsers find the icon
The conventional root file
Most browsers and applications automatically try /favicon.ico at the website root. A file at that exact path can therefore work without any extra markup. This convention is useful as a fallback, but it does not prevent you from choosing another filename or directory.
An explicit HTML declaration
When the file is somewhere else, declare it in the document’s <head> element:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">The href value is the URL path the browser must request. If your image is stored at /assets/brand-mark.png, use that path instead:
<link rel="icon" href="/assets/brand-mark.png">The path is resolved from the site’s origin when it begins with /. A relative path such as images/favicon.png is resolved relative to the current document, which can produce surprising results on nested URLs.
Multiple declarations
A site can publish more than one icon. The rel value identifies an icon resource, while sizes gives the browser a hint about available dimensions. For example:

<link rel="icon" href="/icons/favicon.svg" sizes="any">sizes="any" can indicate a scalable vector icon. The browser is free to select the resource that best fits its interface; declarations are hints, not a promise that every platform will use the same file.
How to add a favicon to a website
- Create a square source image. Start with a simple mark that remains recognizable when reduced. Fine lettering and detailed photographs usually disappear at tab size.
- Export one or more web formats. ICO, PNG and GIF are common favicon formats according to MDN. PNG is convenient for most modern sites; ICO remains a familiar fallback. If you use SVG, verify that the browsers and platforms you support accept it.
- Upload the file. Place it at the root as
/favicon.icoor at the path you plan to reference, such as/icons/favicon-32.png. - Add the link in every page’s head. Put the declaration inside
<head>, not in the page body. A shared layout or template is the safest place for sites with many pages. - Publish and test the exact URL. Open the icon URL directly in a browser. A successful response proves that the path and deployment are correct; it does not prove that every browser has refreshed its cached copy.
- Check the target surfaces. Open a new tab, save the page as a bookmark and inspect the address bar or history. Test on the browsers and devices that matter to your audience because home-screen and search-result behavior can differ.
Favicon dimensions and formats by context
There is no single size that is “the” favicon size for every surface.

MDN lists GIF, PNG and ICO among common favicon formats. Google Search Central lists BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF for its search-result favicon feature. Those Google formats describe that feature, not a universal requirement for browser tabs.
Design at a larger square canvas when possible, then provide a deliberately simplified small version if the mark becomes unclear at 16 pixels. A large source does not automatically make a detailed logo legible; the silhouette and contrast matter more than raw dimensions.
Will a favicon appear in Google Search?
Not necessarily. Google Search Central says a favicon must meet its technical and crawlability guidelines, but “A favicon isn’t guaranteed to appear in Google Search results, even if all guidelines are met.” Google needs to crawl both the homepage and the favicon file, and its guidance asks for an icon that represents the site and a stable icon URL.

Google’s page concerns the organic search-results feature, not browser-tab rendering and not search ranking. Adding a favicon does not establish a ranking benefit. After you correct an icon, Google says recrawling can take several days to several weeks; that is a qualitative range, not a guaranteed deadline.
Common problems and fixes
The tab shows a blank or generic icon
- Open the declared
hrefURL directly. A 404, redirect loop or server error means the browser cannot obtain the file. - Confirm that the
<link rel="icon">element is inside<head>and appears in the HTML delivered to the browser. - If you rely on the convention, verify that the file is exactly at the site root as
/favicon.ico, not inside a subdirectory.
The icon works at one URL but not another
Check whether the declaration uses a relative path. A relative href can point to different locations from pages in different directories. Use an origin-root path such as /icons/favicon.png when the asset is shared site-wide.
The old icon keeps appearing
Browsers cache favicons independently from ordinary page content. Test in a private window or another browser first. If you intentionally replaced the file but clients continue receiving the old resource, publish the replacement under a new filename and update the href; this gives the browser a new URL to request.
The icon looks blurry
A tiny raster image enlarged for a larger surface will lose detail. Provide a higher-resolution square asset and, where appropriate, separate declarations with accurate sizes hints. Simplify the artwork instead of shrinking a complex logo unchanged.
Google does not show it
Check that Google can crawl the homepage and favicon URL, that the icon is square and meets the stated minimum, that the URL is stable and that the image represents the site. Even after those checks, Google’s documentation says appearance is not guaranteed, and recrawling may take days or weeks.
