Behance’s official cover-image guidance says a project cover displays at 202 × 158 px and recommends uploading an image at least 808 × 632 px for retina displays. Those dimensions come from Behance Help Center guides last updated June 5, 2020; Behance’s more recent platform description does not restate them, so treat them as the best located official guidance rather than confirmation that the dimensions have not changed since 2020.

Behance thumbnail size at a glance

Use Dimensions or limit What it means
Project cover display 202 × 158 px Behance’s stated display size for the cover image, according to its cover guides updated June 5, 2020.
Recommended cover upload At least 808 × 632 px Behance recommends this larger source image for a better experience on retina displays. It is guidance, not a separate requirement that every source image have exactly these dimensions.
Project images in Project View 1400 px wide General project-image display guidance in Behance’s 2022 image guide; not a cover-only dimension.
Project images in Lightbox Up to 2800 px wide General project-image display guidance in Behance’s 2022 image guide.
General project-image file guidance Under 10 MB recommended; 50 MB limit Applies to project images generally, not a distinct cover-only file-size rule.

The cover and the images inside a project serve different purposes. The cover is the small preview used to help someone decide whether to open the project. Images within the project are subject to Behance’s separate image-format, width, and file-size guidance.

How to prepare a cover that crops well

Start with the recommended source size

Create the cover at 808 × 632 px or larger. That size has the same approximate aspect ratio as the stated 202 × 158 px display, so it gives Behance room to show a crisp small preview. If you begin with a differently proportioned image, the editor’s crop will determine what remains visible; making the source larger does not prevent unwanted cropping.

Design for the small preview

At 202 × 158 px, fine details and small type can become difficult to read. Keep the main subject, logo, or short title prominent, and avoid placing essential information close to the edges. These are practical design recommendations, not extra technical rules published by Behance. Check the image at roughly the size it will appear in a project grid, not only at full resolution.

Keep the focal point inside the crop

Leave some breathing room around the important content. A cover may need to be repositioned in Behance’s crop tool, and an image that looks balanced in its uncropped original may lose a face, word, or key visual detail when framed for the cover. Choose the visible region deliberately and inspect the result before continuing.

Choose and crop the cover in Behance

Behance’s project editor lets you use an image already included in the project or add a separate cover image, then crop it before continuing. The precise control labels may change, so follow the project-settings flow rather than relying on a particular button name.

  1. Open the project editor and go to the project settings or cover-image area.
  2. Select an image from the project or add the image you prepared specifically as the cover.
  3. Use Behance’s crop tool to position the visible area around the subject or message you want viewers to see.
  4. Inspect the selected crop at small size. Move or adjust it if important content is clipped or hard to read.
  5. Complete the project details before publishing. Behance’s FAQ says a project needs a cover image, a title, and at least one Creative Field before it can be published.

You do not need Photoshop just to set a Behance cover: the editor includes a crop step. An image editor can still help if you need to resize, compose, or export the artwork before uploading.

Cover image versus images inside the project

Behance’s general image advice is distinct from its cover dimensions. For project images, Behance recommends JPEG or PNG, a width of 2800 px or less, and files under 10 MB. Its stated image limit is 50 MB. It displays project images at 1400 px wide in Project View and up to 2800 px in Lightbox.

  • For project content: follow the general JPEG or PNG, width, and file-size recommendations. They are not additional cover dimensions.
  • For color: use RGB for screen images. Behance says it converts CMYK images, which can change how colors appear.

If an upload fails, first check whether the file exceeds Behance’s 50 MB image limit. If it uploads but looks soft or unexpectedly framed, check the source dimensions and the crop. A file being under 50 MB does not mean it matches Behance’s recommended under-10-MB target.

Why a social preview may not use your cover

A Behance project cover and a link preview on another platform are not necessarily the same image. Behance generally selects the largest, most square static image near the top of the project for social sharing. If no static image meets its criteria, it displays the cover instead. To encourage use of the cover, place it near the top of the project content.

After changing a project image, an external platform may continue showing an older preview because it caches link previews. A delayed change does not by itself mean the Behance cover crop failed. Allow for destination-platform caching and check the project page itself separately from the shared-link card.

Capture a screenshot to check the published project

A screenshot can help you inspect how a published Behance page appears in a browser viewport, but it does not replace Behance’s cover crop or change which image a social network chooses. You can use a browser’s built-in screenshot or capture tool for a manual check. If you want a repeatable API capture, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try for capturing the page itself; it is a website screenshot API, not a Behance cover editor.

For a quick capture of a published project page, make one GET request. Replace the target URL with the Behance project page you want to inspect. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.behance.net/gallery/PROJECT_ID/PROJECT-NAME -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={
        "access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY",
        "url": "https://www.behance.net/gallery/PROJECT_ID/PROJECT-NAME",
    },
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://www.behance.net/gallery/PROJECT_ID/PROJECT-NAME'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These captures are for reviewing the rendered page, not validating an external platform’s cached social card.

Troubleshooting common cover problems

The cover looks cropped differently than the original

That is what the crop step is for. Return to the cover selection in project settings, reposition the image, and verify that the focal subject remains visible in the selected region. Keep critical text and visual details away from the edges when preparing a replacement.

The project cannot be published

Check that the project has a cover image and title, and that at least one Creative Field has been selected. Behance lists all three as publishing requirements.

The project image upload is rejected

For general project images, check the file size against Behance’s stated 50 MB limit and use a JPEG or PNG. Behance recommends staying under 10 MB and keeping image width at or below 2800 px. These general image recommendations should not be mistaken for a separate cover-only limit.

The colors change after upload

Check whether the source is CMYK. Behance says it converts CMYK images and that conversion can alter appearance; RGB is its recommendation for images intended for screens.

A shared link still shows the wrong image

First check the project itself, then check the top of its content for a suitable static image. Behance may select a large, near-square image there instead of the cover. If the project now has the intended image but a social preview does not, destination-platform caching may be delaying the update.

What the published dimensions do—and do not—settle

Behance’s cover help pages, both updated June 5, 2020, give the 202 × 158 px display size and recommend an upload of at least 808 × 632 px for retina displays. A Behance platform description updated September 3, 2026 does not restate these cover dimensions. The available official guidance therefore supports using those values while recognizing that it does not establish whether Behance has changed them since 2020. The general project-image guidance cited above is from Behance’s 2022 help material.
