Find the exact image or graphic request that is failing before changing your site. In your browser’s Developer Tools, inspect the Network panel and Console, note the requested URL and error, then check the file path, HTTPS, security policy, cache, and—on WordPress—permalink or server configuration as indicated by the evidence. A broken graphic can have several causes; the browser’s actual request is a better starting point than guessing or installing a fix plugin.
First identify what is missing
Before making changes, establish the scope. One broken photograph points to a different investigation than every image disappearing or a page losing all its styling. Note which page and browser are affected, whether the problem appears on a phone as well as a computer, and what changed shortly before it began.
- Is it one image, a set of images, a logo or icon, CSS background graphics, or nearly every visual asset?
- Does the page otherwise look normal, or is it also missing its layout and styles?
- Did the issue begin after an upload, site migration, HTTPS change, theme or plugin update, or CDN change?
- Does the problem appear in another browser or a private window?
These observations help narrow the investigation, but none proves a cause by itself. For example, a graphic missing after a migration could be a bad URL, an absent file, or a server rewrite problem. Inspect the failed resource before choosing a repair.
Inspect the failed request in Developer Tools
Open the affected page, open your browser’s Developer Tools, and inspect its network activity and Console. In Chrome, the Network panel shows requests made while a page loads; Chrome’s guide is titled Inspect network activity. The Console can expose browser warnings, including mixed-content and Content Security Policy (CSP) errors.

- Open Developer Tools and select the Network panel.
- Reload the page with the panel open so requests from the page load are recorded.
- Find the image, stylesheet, icon, or other resource that appears to fail. If available, filter the request list by images or search for part of the filename.
- Record the requested URL and the status or browser error. Also check the Console for a message that names mixed content, CSP, or another specific restriction.
- Where appropriate, open the asset URL directly in a new tab. This can help establish whether the address itself returns the expected file, though a direct visit does not reproduce every condition on the original page.
Do not treat a generic “failed” message as a diagnosis. Use the URL and the browser’s specific error to decide which checks to make next. Chrome documents its Network panel in Inspect network activity; browser messages are clues, not a substitute for verifying the file and site configuration.
Check the URL, filename, and deployed file
Compare the URL shown in the failed request with the file the page is intended to use. Check the domain, directory, filename, capitalization, and extension. A URL that differs from the actual file by even a character can request a file that does not exist. Also confirm that the image was uploaded to the live site—not merely saved on your computer or present in a local development copy—and that it is in the directory the page references.
- If the requested path is wrong, correct the page’s image source or the CSS URL that points to it.
- If the path looks right but the file is absent from the server, upload the correct file to the intended directory and confirm it is available at that address.
- If the page refers to a different domain or old directory, update the reference to the current asset location.
- If the URL opens a different file than expected, check the filename and extension rather than assuming the browser is displaying a stale image.
WordPress’s documentation, FAQ: I make changes and nothing happens, advises checking the address, confirming the changed file was uploaded, and verifying that the correct file is on the host. A working local path does not establish that the live server contains the same file.
If a WordPress image returns a 404 after a move
When image URLs return 404 errors after a migration, server move, or change to pretty permalinks, investigate the site’s rewrite and permalink configuration. WordPress Developer Resources’ Common WordPress errors identifies Apache mod_rewrite as one possible issue and suggests resetting permalinks. In WordPress, open Settings > Permalinks and save the existing permalink settings to refresh them; do not change the site’s URL structure unnecessarily just to test.

Do not edit .htaccess or server rewrite rules unless that setup applies to your site and you understand the change. Incorrect server configuration can affect more than images. If you are unsure, ask the host or site administrator to check rewrite support and the relevant server configuration.
Make sure every asset uses HTTPS
If the page is served over HTTPS but an image, stylesheet, or CDN asset is requested over plain HTTP, the browser may warn about or block that mixed-content request. Check the full failing URL and Console message. Cloudflare’s SSL/TLS documentation describes mixed-content errors on secure pages, while MDN’s Mixed content guidance includes HTML image sources and CSS image URLs.
- Find the exact resource URL in the Network panel or Console.
- If it begins with
http://while the page useshttps://, check whether the same asset is available over HTTPS. - If it is, update the page, stylesheet, or asset configuration to use the working HTTPS address.
- If a third-party asset is not available securely, use a secure alternative or remove it. Do not weaken browser security to make an insecure request work.
- Reload the page and verify that the request succeeds and the mixed-content warning is gone.
MDN’s guidance and web.dev’s Fixing mixed content explain how to identify and repair insecure references. Cloudflare states, “Most modern browsers block HTTP requests on secure HTTPS pages.” That is general vendor troubleshooting guidance, not a promise that every browser treats every resource identically; rely on the error reported by the browser you are checking. For a third-party asset, use a secure alternative instead of trying to bypass the browser’s protection.
Check Content Security Policy when the Console names it
A site’s Content Security Policy can prevent an otherwise valid image from loading if its origin is not permitted. Follow this branch when the Console specifically reports that CSP blocked the resource; changing CSP without such evidence can introduce unnecessary security risk.

Inspect the policy and its img-src directive. If the policy does not specify img-src, default-src may govern image sources instead. MDN’s Content Security Policy (CSP) documentation describes these directive roles. Allow only the image origin or origins that the site genuinely needs, then reload and check the request again.
Do not broadly disable CSP as a troubleshooting shortcut. If the policy is managed by a plugin, host, reverse proxy, or application configuration, make the narrow change in the layer that supplies it, or ask its administrator for help.
Clear only the cache layers your site uses
If the URL and deployed file are correct, an old cached page or asset may still be served. Start with a browser reload and clear the browser cache if needed. If your site actually uses a WordPress caching plugin, host-side cache, reverse proxy, or CDN, purge the relevant layer as well, then reload the affected page.
WordPress documentation lists browser, server-side, and plugin caching among the reasons a change may not appear. WordPress does not include a cache by default, so do not look for a built-in WordPress cache control if the site has no caching layer installed. Purge only the layers that exist on your site; clearing unrelated caches will not correct a wrong path, absent file, CSP refusal, or blocked HTTP request.

If the issue began after a theme or plugin change, follow WordPress’s official troubleshooting path to isolate the change cautiously. Back up the site before altering files or configuration, and avoid disabling components on a live site in a way that disrupts visitors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the repair, then share useful evidence
After each change, reload the exact affected page and check the exact resource request again. A repair is confirmed when the intended file loads, the image or graphic appears, and the relevant Network error or Console warning is gone. If browser state may be involved, compare a private window or another browser rather than repeatedly changing server settings.
If the problem remains, send the site administrator or host enough information to reproduce and investigate it:
- The page URL and exact failing asset URL.
- The browser and device where the issue occurs.
- The Network status or exact browser error, plus any relevant Console message.
- Whether one resource or many are affected.
- Recent uploads, migrations, HTTPS changes, theme or plugin updates, and CDN changes.
- Which cache, host, or CDN layers the site uses, if known.
This evidence helps separate an incorrect reference or missing upload from a browser restriction, stale cache, or server delivery issue. If the site is publicly accessible, a screenshot can document what the page looks like, but it does not replace the failed request details.

If you need a clean visual capture of the page while documenting a repair, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one GET request. A screenshot can help compare how a page renders; it does not diagnose or fix a broken image URL, server response, CSP rule, or HTTPS configuration. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python example:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js example:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the example target URL to the page you want to capture. ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Common website image failures and fixes
| What you observe | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A single image fails and its request points to an unexpected or missing path. | The URL, filename, capitalization, extension, and live-server upload. | Correct the reference or upload the intended file to the correct directory. |
| WordPress image URLs return 404 after a move or permalink change. | The requested path and the site’s rewrite/permalink configuration. | Save the existing settings at Settings > Permalinks; ask the host about rewrite support if the 404 persists. |
| The Console identifies an HTTP resource on an HTTPS page. | The failing asset URL and whether a working HTTPS version exists. | Use the HTTPS reference, or replace/remove a third-party asset that cannot be served securely. |
| The Console names a CSP violation. | img-src, or default-src when no img-src is set. |
Permit only the required image origin in the policy. |
| A valid changed file still appears unchanged. | Browser cache and any installed plugin, host, proxy, or CDN cache. | Purge the applicable layer or layers and reload. |
FAQ
Will adding alt text make a missing image appear?
No. Alt text provides a text alternative associated with an image; it does not upload a missing file, correct its URL, or override a browser or server restriction. Use it for accessibility, and repair the failing resource separately.
