To reduce WordPress storage, first back up the database and uploads, then identify large or genuinely unreferenced files, review every candidate, and delete in small batches. The files must actually be removed from the storage counted by your host; whether that lowers your bill depends on your plan’s quota, billing model, and backup retention.
What media cleanup can—and cannot—save
Removing obsolete originals and generated image derivatives can reduce the number of files held in your uploads directory. That may lower storage usage, backup size, or the risk of exceeding a quota. It does not guarantee a cheaper plan or a specific dollar saving: hosting providers calculate charges differently, and no generally reliable percentage or savings figure is established.
Check your host’s storage meter and billing rules before and after cleanup. Some hosts refresh usage statistics only periodically, and some count backups, staging copies, caches, or databases separately from live uploads.
Why “unattached” does not mean unused
In the Media Library, an attachment can be marked “unattached” when it is not associated with a post in the usual WordPress relationship. It may still appear in a page builder, theme option, slider, custom field, product catalog, CSS rule, email template, or an external website. WordPress.com explicitly warns that unattached media can still be in use.

A scanner’s “unused” result is therefore a candidate list, not proof. Treat each item as a review decision, not an automatic deletion instruction.
A safe, repeatable cleanup workflow
1. Make and verify a complete backup
Create a restorable backup of both the database and the entire uploads directory before changing media in bulk. WordPress.com recommends exporting the Media Library before deleting many files. Confirm that the backup can actually be downloaded or restored; a backup job that completed without a usable archive is not protection.
2. Build an inventory
Record filenames or URLs, dimensions, file sizes, and likely reasons for review. Start with groups that commonly contain obsolete data:

- Old campaign banners and seasonal promotions
- Superseded logos, staff photos, and brand assets
- Duplicate uploads with numbered filenames
- Retired product or property imagery
- Assets left behind by removed themes or plugins
- Very large originals that were uploaded when a smaller source would have been sufficient
Sorting by size helps prioritize space, but a large file can still be important. Preserve the original URL in your record so you can reverse a decision.
3. Check every possible reference
Search more than posts and pages. Check reusable blocks, menus, theme customizer settings, widgets, custom fields, page builders, sliders, forms, ecommerce products, CSS and JavaScript, feeds, and multilingual content. Also search code and documentation for direct links to the uploads URL. If another site, app, newsletter, or social profile uses the file, deleting it can create a broken external image.
4. Scan, then review manually
A cleanup plugin can accelerate discovery, especially on a large library, but its result depends on what it can inspect. Review the candidate list against your inventory and references. Whitelist files that must stay. For uncertain items, download a copy or move them to a quarantine location rather than deleting them immediately.

5. Delete a small batch and test
Remove a limited group, clear any relevant caches, and inspect the public site. Check the homepage, high-traffic landing pages, key templates, product pages, forms, and responsive layouts for missing images. WordPress.com advises checking for broken image links after deletion. Continue in batches only after the first batch passes.
6. Recheck storage and backups
Wait for the host’s usage meter to refresh, then compare live storage and the size of new backups. If the meter does not change, the files may still exist in a backup, staging copy, object-storage replica, or trash system—or your plan may not charge by that category.

Generated thumbnails need a separate plan
WordPress and plugins create multiple registered image sizes from one uploaded original. A site can therefore contain many derivatives that are no longer needed after a theme or plugin change. WP-CLI’s media tools can show registered sizes and can prune selected generated variants.

Use this route only when you understand which sizes are registered and where they are referenced. A derivative may be linked directly by an external service even when WordPress no longer displays it. In the WP-CLI media-command project, old sizes are retained by default; an option to remove abandoned sizes must be selected explicitly. Test thumbnail pruning on staging, keep a rollback copy, and review the resulting pages before running it against production.
Pruning derivatives is not a substitute for finding unused originals. It addresses generated variants, while the original attachment may still be required.
Cleanup methods compared
| Approach | Useful for | Checks and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Media Library review | Small libraries or a few known obsolete files | Simple and transparent, but slow at scale; an “unattached” label is not definitive. |
| Media Cleaner | Scanning and reviewing possible unused media | Its listing describes an internal-trash workflow and broader Pro compatibility. Those are listing claims, not independent performance results; back up and review every result. |
| Media Hygiene | Candidate lists with file details | Its listing describes whitelisting and backup-download features and says to back up first. It cannot inspect files inside existing backups; verify current compatibility and plan requirements. |
| WP-CLI thumbnail pruning | Administrators who specifically need to remove generated size variants | List sizes and check external references first. It does not identify every unused original and can remove derivatives still referenced elsewhere. |
How to choose a scanner or plugin
Before installing a cleanup tool, determine what it actually examines:

Media Cleaner and Media Hygiene are examples of tools aimed at this scan-and-review task, not independently ranked winners. Confirm their present WordPress, PHP, builder, multisite, pricing, and support compatibility before relying on them.
WordPress.com versus self-hosted WordPress
WordPress.com’s documented behavior should not be generalized to every self-hosted installation or host-managed dashboard. WordPress.com Support, last reviewed August 11, 2026, states: “Unlike posts and pages, media files are not moved to a trash folder. Deletion is immediate and permanent!” It also recommends checking posts and pages and exporting the Media Library before deleting many files.
On self-hosted WordPress, a plugin, host panel, object-storage integration, or backup system may change what “delete” means. Confirm the behavior in your own environment and retain an independent backup until the site has been checked.
When not to delete
- You cannot produce a verified restore from backup.
- The file is referenced by a builder, custom field, theme option, CSS rule, product, feed, or external site that you have not checked.
- The proposed saving has not been compared with your host’s actual storage and backup billing rules.
- A scan cannot explain why a file was classified as unused and offers no quarantine or rollback path.
- You are about to remove a whole size family without confirming which registered sizes the site and external consumers need.
A practical maintenance schedule
Before a cleanup project
Export or back up the site, document current storage usage, and decide how long quarantined files will be retained.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →During normal publishing
Use descriptive filenames, avoid uploading duplicates, and replace obsolete assets deliberately rather than leaving successive copies in place.
Every few months
Review large files and retired campaigns, inspect newly orphaned assets after theme or plugin changes, and measure both live uploads and backup growth. Delete only after reference checks and a tested recovery path.
