Firefox does not have a built-in per-website daily timer. To limit time on YouTube, Reddit, or another site, use a Firefox extension such as Block Site or LeechBlock NG. For a child’s device, Windows Family Safety or macOS Screen Time provides stronger, password-protected controls across apps. On an organization-managed computer, administrators can use Firefox’s WebsiteFilter policy to block URL patterns, although that policy is not a documented time-quota counter.
What Firefox can and cannot limit by itself
Firefox’s documented settings do not include a control such as “allow Reddit for 30 minutes per day.” You can block content with built-in privacy and safety settings, but a recurring, per-hostname minutes quota requires another control layer.
- One Firefox profile: install an extension that schedules or counts blocking rules.
- A child’s device: configure operating-system parental controls, which Firefox respects while they are active.
- A school or company computer: deploy Firefox’s WebsiteFilter policy to centrally block URL patterns and define exceptions.
Choose the layer that matches the person you are trying to control. An extension is convenient for personal focus, while an operating-system account or managed policy is harder to bypass.
Set a recurring website schedule with Block Site
Block Site is the most direct choice when you want named hostnames blocked during particular hours or dates. Its Mozilla Add-ons listing documents wildcard and regular-expression matching, time/date schedules, and a master password. The listing shows an update date of September 3, 2026; that date describes the listing’s maintenance, not a guarantee of a particular blocking result.

- Open Firefox’s application menu (the three-line button).
- Select Add-ons and themes, then open Extensions.
- Search Mozilla Add-ons for Block Site and select the listing published there. Check the name and permissions before installing.
- Open the extension’s settings and add each hostname you want to restrict. Enter the site in the form the extension expects, such as a domain rather than a search-result URL.
- Set the days, start time, end time, or date range for the rule. Add separate rules when YouTube, Reddit, and another site need different schedules.
- Set a master password in the extension. Store it somewhere the person being restricted cannot access.
- Save the rule and test it with a site you control or during a short, intentional test window.
A schedule is a block window, not necessarily a measured “minutes used” allowance. If your goal is “15 minutes from the moment I open the site,” use an extension that explicitly offers a countdown or deadline rather than assuming every scheduler tracks active minutes.
Use LeechBlock NG for focus and recurring limits
Mozilla’s family-and-student guidance names LeechBlock NG as a tool for blocking distracting websites. Install it through the same path: Application menu → Add-ons and themes → Extensions, then search the Mozilla Add-ons catalog.
When LeechBlock NG fits
- You want groups of distracting sites managed together.
- You need recurring blocked periods for study, work, or sleep.
- You are comfortable reviewing the extension’s set-based rules and testing them before relying on them.
Important limitation
Like other browser extensions, LeechBlock NG runs inside Firefox. A knowledgeable user can disable an extension, and the rule does not automatically apply in Chrome, Safari, another Firefox profile, or a separate device. Keep the extension settings protected, but do not treat it as strong child-account enforcement.
Block a site once for 15, 30, or 60 minutes
If you need a temporary break rather than a repeating schedule, the Mozilla Add-ons listing for Website Blocker: MT documents one-time 15-, 30-, and 60-minute durations plus custom whole-minute deadlines. Availability and behavior can change as an extension is updated, so verify the current listing and test the result.

- Install the extension from Mozilla Add-ons through Add-ons and themes → Extensions.
- Add the hostname to its blocked list.
- Choose the documented 15-, 30-, or 60-minute option, or enter a custom whole-minute deadline if offered.
- Open a test page and confirm that the block expires when expected.
This model is useful for “stop browsing now” sessions. It is different from a daily allowance that resets at midnight; choose a tool whose wording matches the behavior you need.
Stronger controls for children: Windows and macOS
For a child, configure controls at the operating-system level instead of relying only on a Firefox add-on. Mozilla directs Windows users to Microsoft Family Safety and Mac users to Family Sharing/Screen Time.
Windows: Microsoft Family Safety
Create or use the child account in Microsoft Family Safety, then set web and app restrictions there. The exact labels can vary by Windows release and account setup, so confirm that the restriction is attached to the child’s account rather than only to your administrator account.
macOS: Family Sharing and Screen Time
Use Family Sharing to manage the child’s Apple account, then configure Screen Time limits and content restrictions. Protect Screen Time with a passcode that the child does not know.

Why the operating-system layer is stronger
Firefox checks the computer’s parental-control state and enables Prefer:Safe mode while those controls are active. Mozilla states that this feature can be turned off only through the password-protected parental settings in the operating system, so the child cannot deactivate it from Firefox. Because the controls apply at the device or account level, they can cover more than one browser and other applications.
These tools are still different from a precise Firefox-only “minutes per website” meter. Use the operating-system controls when the priority is preventing access across the device; use an extension when you need a Firefox-specific schedule.
Managed computers: Firefox WebsiteFilter policy
Administrators can deploy Firefox’s WebsiteFilter policy to block websites from being visited. It accepts URL match patterns, supports exception patterns, and allows up to 1,000 entries in each block or exception array.
What WebsiteFilter is good for
- Central rules for a school, lab, or company-managed Firefox installation.
- Blocking URL patterns while allowing explicitly defined exceptions.
- Consistent policy that an ordinary user cannot remove through Firefox’s extension manager.
What it does not document
The cited administrator documentation describes URL blocking and exceptions, not a daily time-quota counter. Do not configure WebsiteFilter expecting it to calculate 30 minutes of use per site. Pair it with an operating-system or network control if you need usage accounting or schedules outside Firefox.

Which method should you choose?

Make the limit difficult to bypass
- Use a separate account: child controls are more effective when the child is not an administrator.
- Protect the password or passcode: a master password that is visible in a notes app defeats the schedule.
- Cover other browsers: an extension does not govern Chrome, Safari, another Firefox profile, or a phone.
- Check private windows and alternate domains: test the exact hostnames and subdomains you intend to restrict.
- Test after updates: extension settings and Firefox behavior can change after an update.
- Keep an emergency path: know how to pause a rule when a school, work, banking, or accessibility site is incorrectly blocked.
Troubleshooting
The website still opens
Confirm the rule contains the correct hostname, including any subdomain that serves the content. Check that the schedule is active on the current day and that Firefox is using the profile where the extension was installed. Restart Firefox after changing an extension rule if the listing recommends it.
The block works in Firefox but not elsewhere
This is expected for an extension. Apply a device-level family-control rule or a managed policy when the limit must cover other browsers and apps.
A child disabled the extension
Move enforcement to Microsoft Family Safety or macOS Screen Time, use a non-administrator child account, and keep the OS passcode private. Extension passwords alone are not equivalent to device-level enforcement.
A legitimate page is blocked
Review wildcard and regular-expression entries, remove an overly broad pattern, or add an exception where the tool supports one. Test the exact page again before restoring the schedule.

The limit is a block window, not a usage quota
Many schedulers prevent access during selected times but do not measure active minutes. For a countdown, select an extension that explicitly documents a one-time duration, such as Website Blocker: MT, and verify its current behavior.
