The best BrowserCloud alternative depends on what you are replacing. Choose BrowserBase or Browserless when you still need stateful remote Chrome controlled by Playwright, Puppeteer or CDP. Choose Apify when the deliverable is a dataset or API rather than a browser session. Choose Oxylabs, Decodo or Bright Data when proxy geography and rotation are the center of the workload. For screenshot-only jobs, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it removes common page clutter before capture, bills only clean shots, and starts with 1,000 free screenshots a month.

This guide compares the execution models, concurrency, stealth and proxy behavior, artifacts, pricing and migration implications without treating vendor marketing claims as independent benchmarks.

Quick answer: which BrowserCloud alternative fits?

Alternative Best fit What changes from BrowserCloud Watch for
BrowserBase Teams that want another managed browser-session platform Compare infrastructure model, proxy pricing, response-time claims, proxy switching and cache behavior Published comparisons are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks
Browserless Playwright, Puppeteer or CDP workloads needing hosted browsers Compare shared versus dedicated infrastructure, session duration, caching and pricing model Verify timeout, concurrency and session limits for your plan
Apify Scraping products built from actors, workflows and datasets Moves the center of gravity from a raw browser endpoint to managed extraction jobs Less suitable if you need a long-lived, interactive browser session as the primary object
Oxylabs Enterprise web-data collection where extraction and proxies are central Emphasizes data access and proxy capability rather than only browser orchestration Confirm that the product you select includes the browser controls your workflow needs
Decodo (formerly Smartproxy) Proxy coverage, rotation and country targeting Often used as a proxy layer that you combine with your own automation You may still need to operate browsers, queues and observability
Bright Data Paid web-data and proxy programs Broader network and extraction comparison rather than a like-for-like BaaS swap Check whether you need a browser-session service or a proxy/data network
ScreenshotNeo Reliable screenshots and PDFs without maintaining browsers One HTTP request returns an image or PDF; consent banners, popups and chat widgets are handled before capture It is an artifact API, not a general-purpose interactive browser replacement

What you are replacing

BrowserCloud describes itself as an enterprise-grade browser-automation infrastructure provider. Its documented model is a managed remote browser that works with Puppeteer and Playwright, supports stateful sessions, stealth capabilities, human-in-the-loop workflows, elastic scaling and live session URLs. It also documents HTTP endpoints for rendered content, PDFs and screenshots.

That combination matters. A stateful browser keeps cookies, local storage and in-session navigation; an API-first extractor usually returns content or a dataset without exposing the same interactive session. Before switching, write down whether your application needs a real browser, a rendered response, or only a final artifact.

Compare alternatives by workload, not by brand

1. Execution model

For checkout testing, authenticated dashboards, multi-step forms or human handoff, select a full browser-session service. BrowserBase and Browserless are the closest named comparisons to BrowserCloud because they are evaluated on hosted browser infrastructure. Apify, Oxylabs, Decodo and Bright Data are broader scraping, proxy or web-data choices and may require a different architecture.

2. Framework and protocol support

Inventory every client your code uses: Playwright, Puppeteer, CDP, a language SDK or direct HTTP. A migration is low-risk only when the replacement accepts the same connection style and preserves browser launch arguments, context creation, downloads and event handling. If the service changes from a WebSocket browser to an extraction API, plan a rewrite rather than a URL swap.

3. Concurrency and session lifetime

Measure peak parallel browsers, average session duration, queue time, reconnect behavior and the number of sessions that must remain logged in. BrowserCloud’s public plans expose one, five, 50 or 100 concurrent browsers on Free, Hobby, Startup and Business respectively; Enterprise limits are custom. Do not compare a concurrency number with a request quota as if they were equivalent.

4. Unblocking and stealth

Ask which layer handles fingerprinting, CAPTCHA challenges, proxy rotation and policy restrictions. A proxy vendor can provide an IP without providing a browser. A browser platform can provide a session without guaranteeing access to every protected site. Treat any “unlimited,” success-rate or speed statement as a claim until you test your own target domains under permitted use.

5. Geography and sticky identity

BrowserCloud documents datacenter and residential proxy modes, country targeting and rotating proxies by default. It also documents a sticky-proxy parameter for sessions that need a consistent IP. For each alternative, verify the available countries, IP type, rotation trigger, authentication method and whether a session can retain one exit IP throughout a workflow.

6. Artifacts and observability

List the outputs you actually consume: HTML, screenshots, PDFs, downloads, recordings, live views, console logs and debugging URLs. A service that can render HTML but cannot expose a failed page’s reason may increase diagnosis time. Conversely, paying for a full browser to produce one static image may be unnecessary.

BrowserCloud’s public price baseline

BrowserCloud’s public pricing is credit-based. The following figures are monthly list prices and published allowances; enterprise limits and pricing are custom.

Plan Price Credits Concurrent browsers
Free $0/month 1,000 1
Hobby $19/month 120,000 5
Startup $99/month 1,000,000 50
Business $249/month 3,000,000 100
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom

Documented examples charge one credit for a content request, five for a PDF request and five for a screenshot request. WebSocket browser sessions are metered by the second. Normalize alternatives against your real mix of browser-seconds, extraction requests, proxy traffic and concurrency instead of dividing the plan price by credits alone.

Alternative profiles

BrowserBase: the closest infrastructure comparison

BrowserCloud’s dedicated BrowserBase comparison frames the choice around infrastructure type, proxy pricing, API response time, proxy switching and cache optimization. Those are useful questions for a proof of concept, but the published figures are vendor claims. Re-run the same authenticated flows, regions, page weights and concurrency against both services before making a performance decision.

Browserless: another hosted-browser path

The BrowserCloud–Browserless comparison discusses shared versus dedicated infrastructure, response-time claims, session duration, caching and pricing model. This is a sensible route when your application already speaks Playwright, Puppeteer or CDP. Confirm maximum session duration, queue behavior, browser version, persistent-context support and how failed launches are reported.

Apify: choose it for actors and datasets

G2 describes Apify as a web-scraping and automation platform that can turn websites into APIs. It is a stronger fit when the product requirement is a repeatable actor, workflow, storage and dataset rather than a permanently interactive Chrome connection. You should model run startup time, dataset delivery, retries and per-run spend separately from browser concurrency.

Oxylabs: enterprise extraction and proxy focus

G2 lists Oxylabs among BrowserCloud alternatives in data extraction and proxy software. Consider it when proxy infrastructure and web-data collection are more important than exposing a stateful browser to application code. Verify the exact browser or rendering component you would use, because a proxy subscription alone does not replace Playwright or Puppeteer orchestration.

Decodo: proxy-first architecture

Decodo, formerly Smartproxy, is most naturally compared when rotation, country coverage and proxy management dominate the requirements. In that design, your team generally owns browser lifecycle, page waits, screenshots, retries and telemetry. Budget engineering time for those components before comparing per-gigabyte proxy prices.

Bright Data: broad web-data option

G2 includes Bright Data in its paid alternatives. It belongs on a shortlist for web-data and proxy-oriented programs, especially when you need multiple access methods. Establish whether your workload needs a browser-session platform, a proxy network, an extraction API or a combination; the answer determines the meaningful cost and operational comparison.

A practical migration plan

  1. Classify each job. Label it stateful browser, rendered content, screenshot/PDF, or bulk extraction. Do not migrate all four categories to one product automatically.
  2. Record session requirements. Capture login persistence, cookies, local storage, downloads, navigation depth, maximum runtime and whether a human must observe or take over.
  3. Set a test matrix. Use representative URLs, authenticated and logged-out paths, target countries, desktop and mobile viewports, and your expected concurrency.
  4. Make failures measurable. Record launch errors, navigation timeouts, CAPTCHA or bot-check pages, empty responses, proxy changes, artifact size and retry count.
  5. Run a cost model. Convert your monthly volume into browser-seconds, requests, screenshots, PDFs and proxy traffic. Include idle time and failed attempts where the candidate bills them.
  6. Canary before cutover. Route a small percentage of jobs to the candidate, compare artifacts and logs, then increase traffic only after session recovery and queue behavior are acceptable.

DIY screenshot capture with Playwright

If your requirement is simply a screenshot and you are willing to operate a browser, this minimal Node.js example is a complete baseline. Install Playwright with npm install playwright, then save the file as shot.mjs.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://stripe.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 90000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.webp', fullPage: true, type: 'webp' });
await browser.close();

Production code should add explicit waits for the content you need, bounded retries, browser cleanup in a finally block, logging for navigation and screenshot failures, and a policy for cookie banners and overlays. Full-page captures can be memory-intensive on very long pages; capture a target element or split the page when a single bitmap becomes impractical.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try when the deliverable is a screenshot or PDF rather than an interactive session. Its API base is https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Use the parameter names shown in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The same endpoint supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF output.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Options that remove browser plumbing

  • Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, or one element selected by CSS.
  • Dark mode, 12 device presets, custom viewport, retina scale and transparent backgrounds.
  • PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges.
  • Custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors and waits for a selector, delay or network idle.
  • Ad, tracker, request and resource-type blocking; custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization.
  • Timezone and geolocation, image resizing, a caller-selected cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
  • An MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

Every ScreenshotNeo feature is available on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000 and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try the 1,000 no-card shots.

Troubleshooting a switch

“The replacement is slower.”

Separate browser launch, DNS, navigation, page JavaScript, proxy connection and artifact transfer in your logs. Test identical URLs and regions at the same concurrency; otherwise a response-time comparison is not meaningful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Sessions lose login state.”

Check whether the candidate supports persistent contexts or exported cookies, and whether your code creates a new context for every request. Re-authenticate deliberately and protect stored session data rather than silently retrying a login loop.

“The page shows a bot check.”

Confirm that your use complies with the target site’s rules. Then check IP type, country, rotation and browser fingerprint settings. A proxy change alone may not solve a browser-detection challenge.

“Screenshots contain banners or chat bubbles.”

In a self-managed browser, add a consent-handling step, wait for the overlay to disappear and hide known selectors before capture. For an artifact-only workflow, ScreenshotNeo performs consent acceptance and removes supported overlays before the shot.

“Costs exceed the estimate.”

Inspect the billable unit: BrowserCloud counts content, PDF and screenshot requests differently and meters WebSocket time by the second. Compare retries, idle sessions, proxy traffic and cache behavior, not just the advertised monthly allowance.

“Bulk jobs time out.”

Reduce batch size, bound each navigation and artifact timeout, and make retries idempotent. Use asynchronous jobs or webhooks where available instead of holding one HTTP request open for a large queue.

The Bottom Line

BrowserBase and Browserless are the nearest BrowserCloud-style replacements for stateful hosted Chrome; Apify, Oxylabs, Decodo and Bright Data make more sense when extraction, datasets or proxies are the primary product. If you only need screenshots or PDFs, ScreenshotNeo removes the browser-operations burden and charges only for clean captures.
