Fastest method: show the code at a readable size, press Windows + Shift + S, choose rectangular capture, and drag around the lines you need. For a polished image with syntax colors and a consistent frame, select the code in VS Code and run a code-screenshot extension such as CodeSnap. Before sharing, crop tightly and remove secrets, tokens, private paths, and unrelated UI.
Choose the right capture method

Use the first method when speed matters. Use CodeSnap when presentation matters. Use an API when you need the same result for many URLs, a documentation build, or an automated workflow.
Prepare the code before you capture it
- Open the exact file and lines. Remove unrelated tabs, terminal output, minimaps, and side panels unless they provide necessary context.
- Make text readable. Increase the editor font size and zoom until punctuation, indentation, and line breaks remain clear at the final image size.
- Select only the useful lines. A focused 10-line example is easier to read than an entire file. Keep enough surrounding context that a reader can understand the snippet.
- Check sensitive data. Replace API keys, passwords, bearer tokens, customer data, private hostnames, and local file paths before capture. Cropping after the fact is not a substitute for removing a secret from the visible code.
- Choose a lossless format when text clarity is important. PNG is a practical default. The Code Screenshot marketplace listing documents PNG and SVG export as available extension capabilities; use SVG only where the destination supports it.
Capture a code snippet with Windows Snipping Tool
Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to copy words or images from all or part of a PC screen. Its capture modes include rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen snips.
- Open the code in your editor and arrange the window so the snippet is fully visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- In the snipping toolbar, choose Rectangular mode.
- Drag from one corner of the code area to the opposite corner. Include the line numbers only if they help the reader refer to a line; otherwise leave them out.
- Release the mouse. The capture is copied and a notification opens Snipping Tool for editing.
- Use the editor to annotate if needed, then save or share the image. Choose PNG for crisp text.
- Open the saved file once and inspect it at 100% size. Confirm that brackets, quotes, commas, indentation, and error messages are legible.
Make a rectangular snip look intentional
- Leave a small, even margin around the code instead of cutting through glyphs.
- Keep the selection wide enough that long lines do not wrap unexpectedly.
- Do not include notification banners, chat windows, or unrelated browser tabs.
- If the code is too small, recapture at a larger editor zoom rather than enlarging a blurry image.
Create a styled image in VS Code with CodeSnap

- Open the Extensions view in VS Code and install CodeSnap (or another code-screenshot extension you have evaluated).
- Open the source file and select the exact lines to publish.
- Open the Command Palette and run the extension’s screenshot command, or use the shortcut displayed in the extension listing and your current keybindings.
- Review the generated preview. Adjust the selection or editor styling if the image includes unnecessary lines or if text is too small.
- Copy the image to the clipboard or save it to a file, as supported by the extension.
- Choose PNG or SVG when those export choices are available. Verify the saved file in the application where it will be posted.
When a styled extension is the better choice
- Documentation and tutorials: syntax coloring and a consistent frame make examples easier to scan.
- Code reviews and issue reports: selecting only the failing lines keeps attention on the defect.
- Presentations: a generated image avoids exposing your entire desktop.
Do not assume an extension will preserve every editor feature. If a font, theme, ligature, or background looks different in the preview, inspect the actual exported file rather than relying on the editor view.
MacOS and Linux considerations
The cited CodeSnap listing includes shortcut conventions for Windows, Linux, and macOS, so the extension route is portable across those systems. Exact key combinations depend on the installed extension and your current VS Code keybindings. For a built-in capture, use your operating system’s rectangular or area-selection screenshot command, then apply the same preparation, privacy, cropping, and readability checks described above. Do not publish a shortcut as universal: desktop environments and OS versions can remap it.
Export and review checklist
- Legibility: read the smallest text without zooming the image viewer.
- Completeness: include imports, declarations, or a short comment when they are required to understand the snippet.
- Privacy: search visually for credentials, email addresses, customer identifiers, internal URLs, and machine-specific paths.
- Consistency: use the same theme, margins, and image dimensions for a series of examples.
- Accessibility: provide the code as selectable text or an accessible transcript alongside the image; a screenshot alone cannot be searched or copied.
- File integrity: reopen the saved image and check that no scaling, compression, or accidental crop changed punctuation.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The shortcut does nothing
Confirm that you pressed the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together, and that the keyboard focus is not being intercepted by a remote-desktop or screen-recording tool. If the toolbar still does not appear, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and start a new capture there.

The code is blurry
Recapture at a larger editor font size and save as PNG. Avoid enlarging a small JPEG; interpolation cannot restore punctuation that was never captured.

Resize the editor, hide unrelated panels, and repeat the rectangular drag. With CodeSnap, change the selected range before generating a new image.
Long lines are cut off or wrapped
Widen the editor before capturing, or select a shorter example. A wider image is preferable to a forced wrap that changes how the code reads.

Syntax colors are missing
Check that the file has the correct language mode in VS Code. A screen snip reproduces whatever the editor displays; an extension preview may also depend on its supported language and theme settings.
A secret was visible in the first capture
Delete the image from shared locations, rotate or revoke the exposed credential, and recapture after replacing it in the source. Cropping an already shared secret does not make it safe.
