If Snipping Tool opens on a monitor you disconnected, focus it from the taskbar and press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows + Shift + Right Arrow. Windows moves the active window between displays. When it appears, press Windows + Up Arrow to maximize it. This fixes the common off-screen-window problem without reinstalling Snipping Tool.
Move Snipping Tool back to a visible monitor
1. Focus the existing window
- Launch Snipping Tool from Start, or click its icon on the taskbar if it is already running.
- Leave Snipping Tool focused. You do not need to see the window for the next shortcut to work.
- Press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows + Shift + Right Arrow. Microsoft documents this as moving the active app or window from one monitor to another.
- Repeat the shortcut until the window reaches a display you can see.
If the taskbar icon shows several windows, click the Snipping Tool preview you want first. The move shortcut applies only to the focused window.
2. Maximize it after it returns
Press Windows + Up Arrow once the window is visible. This maximizes the active window and removes a tiny or partly hidden position. You can then resize it normally by dragging its edges.

Why Snipping Tool opens off screen
Windows remembers an app’s position. If you used Snipping Tool with two monitors, a dock, a projector or a remote desktop session, it may retain coordinates belonging to that display after the display disappears. An extra monitor that remains enabled in Windows but is no longer plugged in can produce the same result.

This is a window-placement problem, not proof that Snipping Tool is missing. The app can be running even when no part of its window is visible. It is also separate from the capture overlay: Windows + Shift + S may still work while the full Snipping Tool window is off screen.
Correct a stale or disconnected display layout
Check Display settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display.
- Review the monitor diagram and the listed displays. Select a display that is no longer connected and use the available disconnect or disable option for that installed Windows build.
- Use Identify to match each number to a physical monitor, then arrange the remaining displays so their edges match your desk.
- Close Settings, relaunch Snipping Tool from Start and test its position.
Display-setting labels can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions. The important goal is to remove or disable a display that Windows still believes exists, then start Snipping Tool again.
Remote desktop and docking cases
If the problem began after disconnecting from Remote Desktop, leaving a dock or unplugging a monitor, reconnect the original display temporarily if possible. Move Snipping Tool to the current monitor with the keyboard shortcut, close it there, and then disconnect the display. Closing the app on a visible monitor gives Windows a usable position to remember.
Use Snap when the window is partly visible
Drag to an edge
When you can see a title bar or a thin portion of Snipping Tool, drag it to the left or right edge of the desktop. Windows Snap previews a position; release the mouse when the preview appears. Dragging to the top edge can maximize the window on supported Windows builds.

Use Snap keyboard controls
With Snipping Tool focused, use the Windows Snap keyboard controls to place it against a screen edge, then maximize it with Windows + Up Arrow. If the window is completely invisible, the monitor-move shortcut is more reliable because Snap needs the active window to be associated with a visible desktop area.
Confirm that you are opening the right Snipping Tool entry point
Open the application from Start
Select Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the installed app. This opens the main window, where you can choose still-image or video capture modes and change settings.
Use the capture shortcuts
Windows + Shift + S opens the image-snipping overlay. Windows + Shift + R opens video capture. Print Screen is another capture entry point on supported configurations. These shortcuts may capture successfully even if the main window is positioned off screen, so a working overlay does not by itself prove that the window placement is fixed.
Multiple-monitor behavior
Snipping Tool supports multiple displays. The capture overlay should let you select an area on the monitor you are using. If the overlay appears on an unexpected display, first repair the display arrangement in Settings > System > Display, then test again.

Troubleshoot the failure that remains
The move shortcut does nothing
- Click Snipping Tool’s taskbar icon or use
Alt + Tabuntil it is the active application, then pressWindows + Shift + Left/Right Arrowagain. - Press the arrow key more than once. Each press targets the next monitor in that direction; a single press may not reach the display you expect.
- Check whether another utility has remapped the Windows key, Shift key or arrow keys. Screenshot, keyboard-customization and window-management tools can intercept these combinations.
The capture shortcut does not work either
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review keyboard options that affect shortcut behavior.
- Temporarily close competing screenshot, clipboard or hotkey utilities and test
Windows + Shift + Sagain. - Use Start to open Snipping Tool directly. If the app opens, test a capture from its own controls before diagnosing the keyboard.
Microsoft notes that keyboard settings or another app overriding a shortcut can prevent it from working, even when Snipping Tool is installed.
The window returns off screen after every launch
- Move it to the visible monitor and maximize it.
- Close Snipping Tool while it is visible.
- Correct stale displays in Settings > System > Display.
- Restart the Windows session and launch Snipping Tool from Start.
If the behavior continues, use the built-in app Repair or Reset controls exposed for your installed Windows build. These controls are preferable to an unverified registry edit; registry locations and repair behavior can vary by Windows version.
The taskbar icon is present but no preview appears
Right-click the icon and choose the available close command, then start Snipping Tool again from Start. If Windows reports that the app is not responding, restart the app or the Windows session before trying the display-layout steps again.
Prevent the window from being stranded again
- Before unplugging a monitor or dock, move Snipping Tool and other frequently used apps onto the display that will remain connected.
- After ending a remote session, verify the local display arrangement before launching capture tools.
- Keep only currently connected displays enabled in Settings > System > Display.
- When you need a quick image, use
Windows + Shift + S; when you need settings or video capture, open the main app and confirm its title bar is visible.

FAQ
Does an invisible Snipping Tool window mean I need to reinstall it?
No. An off-screen position is usually retained window coordinates after a monitor or remote-session change. Move the focused window between monitors first; reinstalling does not address the display layout that caused the position.
Why does Windows + Shift + S work when the app window is invisible?
The shortcut opens a capture overlay, while the main Snipping Tool window has its own saved position. They can behave independently.
Should I edit the registry to force a new window position?
Not as a first step. Microsoft guidance supports moving the active window, correcting displays and using the installed app’s repair or reset controls. Registry instructions are build-specific and should not be applied generically.
