You can keep your WordPress site and use Shopify to manage products and ecommerce operations. For most site owners, the choice is between Shopify’s Sell on WordPress plugin-and-channel setup, a Buy Button embed for selected pages, or a developer-built interface using Shopify’s Buy Button JS library.

Choose the integration that fits your site

Route Best for Main tradeoff
Sell on WordPress plugin and sales channel Displaying Shopify products or collections across WordPress pages Requires supported WordPress editor and PHP versions, plus setup in both platforms
Buy Button embed Adding a product or collection purchase component to selected posts or pages You copy embed code, and changing the button’s appearance later means replacing the embed
Buy Button JS library A developer building a customized product and cart interface Requires JavaScript work; Shopify’s library documentation is not a turnkey WordPress setup guide

Shopify’s current first-party WordPress route uses both a WordPress plugin and Shopify’s Sell on WordPress sales channel. Installing just one is not the documented connection method. See Shopify’s Sell on WordPress setup guide.

Check WordPress compatibility and store setup

Before choosing the plugin route, check that your site meets Shopify’s stated requirements: WordPress 5.0 or later, PHP 7.4 or later, and the Block Editor (Gutenberg) or Site Editor. The Classic Editor is not supported by this plugin. Shopify also recommends configuring key store features—including products, Shopify Payments, shipping rates, and a plan—before selling through the channel. Requirements and setup details are in Shopify’s documentation.

Connect Shopify to WordPress with the official plugin

  1. Install the WordPress plugin. Download the Shopify plugin, then in WordPress admin upload or install it and activate it.
  2. Install the Shopify sales channel. In Shopify, open Settings → Sales channels, go to the Shopify App Store, find Sell on WordPress, and install it.
  3. Complete the connection. Follow the connection steps with both the WordPress plugin and Shopify sales channel installed.
  4. Make products available. In Shopify, make the products or collections you want to use available to the Sell on WordPress channel.
  5. Add them to WordPress. Add the products or collections to the relevant WordPress pages or posts using the integration.

Shopify provides product details such as titles, prices, images, and variants for display on WordPress. Collections appear as customizable product grids. Product and collection changes made in Shopify—including prices, images, descriptions, and availability—sync to the WordPress display; an item made unavailable on the channel stops displaying there. See Shopify’s guide to adding products to a WordPress site.

Add a product or collection with a Buy Button

If you only need a purchase component on a few pages, Shopify’s Buy Button is a separate option that does not require following the WordPress plugin route. Create a Buy Button in Shopify for a product or collection, copy its generated embed code, and paste the code into a Custom HTML block in the WordPress block editor.

  1. In Shopify, create a Buy Button for the product or collection you want to feature.
  2. Copy the generated embed code.
  3. In WordPress, open the page or post, add a Custom HTML block, and paste the code into it.
  4. Preview the page and publish or update it when the embedded component appears as expected.

Shopify also documents an option for the Classic Editor: switch from Visual to Text mode before pasting the embed code. Follow Shopify’s Buy Button embed instructions.

Payment and design considerations

  • Buy Buttons are included in all Shopify subscription plans, but a supported payment gateway is required.
  • Shopify notes that third-party transaction fees may apply unless Shopify Payments is activated.
  • An embedded button’s appearance cannot be edited in place. To change it, create a new button and replace the existing code.

Check Shopify’s Buy Button guidance for current details.

When to use the Buy Button JS library

Developers can use Shopify’s Buy Button JS library to embed customizable product-listing and cart UI components directly into a website. Choose this route when you need a more tailored frontend and have JavaScript development capacity. The library documentation describes the components, but it does not provide a complete, turnkey WordPress implementation recipe; it is not a substitute for the plugin or a no-code embed workflow. See the Buy Button JS documentation.

Which route should you use?

  • Choose Sell on WordPress when you want Shopify-managed product or collection displays as part of your WordPress site and your WordPress setup meets the compatibility requirements.
  • Choose a Buy Button when you want to place one or more product or collection purchase components on particular pages and are comfortable pasting embed code.
  • Choose Buy Button JS when a developer needs to customize product and cart UI beyond the standard embed, and can build and maintain the JavaScript implementation.
