To make Snagit your practical default, assign the shortcut you already use to Snagit’s global capture hotkey and remove any Windows or utility conflict. On Windows, that shortcut is normally Print Screen; on macOS, Snagit normally uses Control+Shift+C. This changes which app opens when you press the key—it does not change every screenshot file association in the operating system.

What “default screen capture tool” means in Snagit

Snagit does not become a system-wide handler for every image file or screenshot command. Instead, you make it the tool that responds to your preferred global keyboard shortcut. When the shortcut is pressed, Snagit starts a capture using the options currently selected in its Capture window.

That distinction matters. Changing the hotkey does not automatically switch between image and video, alter the selection type, add effects, open the Editor, or change where the result is saved. Those behaviors come from the Capture window settings or from a separately configured preset.

Set Snagit as the default on Windows

1. Open the Capture window

  1. Start Snagit.
  2. Open the Capture window rather than only the Editor.
  3. Locate the shortcut field below the red Capture button.

2. Assign Print Screen to Snagit

  1. Read the shortcut field. It should say Print Screen.
  2. If another shortcut is shown, click inside the field and press the Print Screen key on your keyboard.
  3. Confirm that Snagit displays Print Screen as the global capture shortcut.

Snagit’s global capture hotkey starts a capture with the settings currently selected in the Capture window. Pressing Print Screen should therefore bring up Snagit’s capture crosshairs or other behavior associated with your selected capture mode.

3. Choose the capture behavior

Before testing the key, use the Capture window to select the workflow you actually want:

  • Image or video: choose the appropriate capture tab. A hotkey change alone does not switch modes.
  • Selection: decide whether you will select a region, window, full screen, or another available target.
  • Effects: configure borders, shadows, or other effects before you capture.
  • Destination: choose whether the result opens in Snagit Editor or is sent directly to a selected share or save destination.

Press Print Screen once these choices are set. If Snagit launches and uses those choices, it is functioning as your default shortcut-driven capture tool.

4. Use a preset for repeatable captures

The global hotkey follows whatever is currently selected in the Capture window. That is convenient for changing tasks, but it can be unpredictable when you need the same result every time. Create a Snagit preset for a fixed workflow—such as a defined region, image capture, and direct save—and assign the preset its own hotkey.

A preset (also called OneClick in Snagit’s workflow) uses its own saved capture settings rather than the settings currently selected in the Capture window. Use the global Print Screen key for flexible work and a preset key for repeatable production steps.

Fix the Windows 11 Print Screen conflict

Windows 11 can reserve Print Screen for Snipping Tool. When that reservation is active, pressing the key may open Snipping Tool even though Snagit is configured correctly.

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Choose Keyboard.
  4. Scroll to the Print screen section.
  5. Turn off Use the Print screen key to open Snipping Tool.
  6. Return to Snagit and test Print Screen again.

TechSmith identifies Snagit 2023.2.1 as containing a fix for this Windows 11 conflict. If you are using an older Snagit release, update before spending time on more complicated troubleshooting. The Windows troubleshooting guidance was updated February 26, 2026, so the wording of the Windows setting may differ slightly in later Windows builds.

Check other applications that claim Print Screen

If Windows no longer routes Print Screen to Snipping Tool but Snagit still does not respond, another background utility may own the key. TechSmith specifically lists OneDrive and Dropbox as applications that can override Print Screen.

  1. Temporarily review or disable screenshot-related options in OneDrive, Dropbox, or any keyboard utility you use.
  2. In Snagit, open File > Capture Preferences > Hotkeys.
  3. Verify that Snagit’s global shortcut is still Print Screen and that no duplicate assignment is shown.
  4. Close and reopen Snagit after changing a competing utility, then test again.

If your keyboard has a function layer, you may need to press Fn+Print Screen. That is a keyboard-specific behavior, not a different Snagit configuration.

Set Snagit as the default shortcut on Mac

1. Open Snagit’s keyboard settings

  1. Open Snagit Editor.
  2. From the macOS menu bar, choose Snagit > Settings.
  3. Open the Keyboard section.

2. Confirm or change the global shortcut

Snagit’s documented default global shortcut on Mac is Control+Shift+C. Click the shortcut shown in Keyboard settings, then press the key combination you want to use. Snagit saves shortcut changes automatically.

Choose a combination that is not already assigned to macOS, a window manager, a password manager, or another capture utility. Test it in a normal application window and on the desktop so you know the shortcut works in both contexts.

Global hotkey versus preset: choose the right model

Question Global shortcut Preset or OneClick shortcut
Which settings does it use? The settings currently selected in the Capture window. The settings saved in that preset.
When is it best? When you change capture type or destination frequently. When a task must produce the same kind of capture every time.
Does changing the key change image/video mode? No. Mode remains whatever the Capture window specifies. No. The preset’s saved mode is used.
Can it open the Editor or save directly? Yes, according to the selected Capture window destination. Yes, according to the preset’s saved destination.
What can prevent it from working? Windows, macOS, or another utility owning the same key. A conflicting preset hotkey or another utility owning that combination.

For a team procedure, a preset is usually easier to document because its behavior remains fixed. For personal, exploratory work, the global shortcut is faster because you can change the Capture window without creating several hotkeys.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Snipping Tool opens when you press Print Screen. Windows 11 still owns the key. Turn off Use the Print screen key to open Snipping Tool under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
Nothing happens. Snagit is assigned another shortcut, is not running, or a utility intercepted the key. Open Snagit’s Capture window, reassign Print Screen, confirm Snagit is running, and check OneDrive, Dropbox, and other hotkey tools.
Snagit starts, but the wrong kind of capture appears. The global hotkey uses the current Capture window settings. Select the required Image or Video tab and adjust selection, effects, and destination before pressing the key.
The capture opens in the wrong place. The destination or sharing option is different from what you expect. Change the share/save destination in the Capture window, or create a preset with a fixed destination.
A preset behaves differently from Print Screen. Presets use their own saved settings. Edit the preset rather than changing the global Capture window settings.
Mac shortcut does not respond. The combination conflicts with another macOS or utility shortcut. Go to Snagit > Settings > Keyboard, assign a different combination, and test it in multiple apps.
Print Screen worked before an update but stopped. Windows or a background utility reclaimed the key. Recheck the Windows Print screen setting, Snagit’s Hotkeys preferences, and competing applications after the update.

A reliable configuration checklist

  • Snagit is installed and running.
  • Windows shows Snagit’s Print Screen assignment, or Mac shows your chosen Keyboard shortcut.
  • Windows 11’s Snipping Tool setting is disabled when it interferes.
  • No cloud-storage or keyboard utility is configured to capture the same key.
  • The Capture window has the intended Image or Video mode.
  • Selection, effects, and destination match the workflow.
  • Any fixed production workflow has a dedicated preset hotkey.
  • You have tested both a normal application window and the desktop.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is an automated screenshot of a web page rather than a keyboard-driven desktop capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so there is no browser profile, extension, or Print Screen conflict to maintain.

Here is a cURL request (the API documentation is at ScreenshotNeo docs):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

You can also select a device or viewport, use retina scale, capture a CSS-selected element, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, run custom JavaScript or CSS, click before capture, hide selectors, block ads or resource types, supply headers, cookies, a user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation, create transparent images, resize output, set a cache TTL, generate signed links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per call, and query usage. Every plan includes every feature. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Which setup should you use?

Use Snagit’s Windows Print Screen or Mac Control+Shift+C shortcut when you need to interactively select something on your current desktop and possibly annotate it in Snagit Editor. Use a preset when consistency matters more than flexibility. Use ScreenshotNeo when the input is a URL, the capture must run from code or an AI agent, or page cleanup and billing visibility are more important than a local keyboard shortcut.
