Short answer: Windows 7’s documented Snipping Tool modes are free-form, rectangular, window and full-screen snips; they do not show a scrolling-capture command. To save a page or document that extends below the screen, use a scrolling-capture utility such as ShareX, or capture the webpage through an API.

What Windows 7 can capture by itself

The Snipping Tool instructions documented for Windows list four ordinary capture modes:

  • Free-form Snip: draw an irregular outline around the area.
  • Rectangular Snip: drag a rectangle around the content.
  • Window Snip: select a visible window.
  • Full-screen Snip: capture the entire visible desktop.

Those instructions do not document a scrolling mode. A full-screen snip therefore captures only what is currently displayed; it does not automatically move down a webpage or append the hidden portion. The exact options can vary with Windows components and updates, so treat this as the documented baseline rather than a promise about every Windows 7 installation.

Open Snipping Tool

  1. Click Start, type Snipping Tool in the search box, and open it.
  2. Choose New, then select Free-form, Rectangular, Window or Full-screen Snip.
  3. Save the resulting image with the Save button or File → Save As.

For a long page, you would have to take several separate snips and join them manually. That is slower and can leave gaps or duplicate content, so a stitching tool is the practical solution.

Use ShareX for a scrolling screenshot

ShareX’s scrolling-capture feature takes successive screenshots while a page or document scrolls, removes the repeated area, and combines the remaining sections into one image. The menu names below are those described in ShareX’s current documentation; check the release notes and requirements for the exact build before installing it on Windows 7.

Step 1: Open the scrolling command

  1. Launch ShareX from the Start menu or its notification-area icon.
  2. Open the main window or the tray menu.
  3. Select Capture → Scrolling capture.

Step 2: Select only the content to stitch

Drag around the page or document area that should appear in the final image. Include the article or document body and its scrollbar, but avoid fixed sidebars, floating chat buttons, sticky headers and footers when possible. These elements can remain in the same place while the rest of the page moves, confusing the image-matching process.

Step 3: Let ShareX scroll and combine

After you release the selection, ShareX captures successive views and scrolls automatically. Do not click the page or move the pointer over interactive content while this runs. Wait until scrolling reaches the end and ShareX displays the resulting image. A very long page can take substantially longer than a normal screen capture because every section must load and be compared with the previous one.

Step 4: Check the result and status color

Review the complete image at 100 percent zoom before sharing it. ShareX uses a status indicator to describe the combination:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Status Meaning What to do
Green The images were combined successfully. Check the top, bottom and a few joins, then save.
Yellow Capture is partially successful; one or more matches may be imperfect. Look for seams, duplicated lines or missing content and recapture with a tighter region.
Red The first images could not be combined, so capture stopped. Reduce changing content and try again.

Save and verify the file

Save the stitched image in the format your destination accepts. Open the saved file independently rather than relying only on the preview. Confirm that the first heading, the final paragraph and any tables or images in between are present. If the page is wider than expected, recapture with a narrower region or use an image editor to crop the sides.

Troubleshoot incomplete or misaligned captures

Fixed sidebars, headers or footers

A sticky element can appear in every frame while the article moves underneath it. ShareX may interpret that repeated furniture as page content. Select a region that excludes the fixed element. If the element overlaps the text, temporarily collapse it or use the site’s reader or print view.

Animation and live content

Video thumbnails, rotating advertisements, counters, auto-updating comments and other dynamic areas can change between frames. The changed pixels make matching less reliable. Pause media, wait for the page to settle, hide the changing area, or select only the stable article column.

Hover effects and the pointer

A cursor can trigger a tooltip, menu or color change as the page scrolls. Move the pointer away from the content—ShareX’s documentation recommends placing it near the top of the scrollbar—before capture starts.

Only part of the page appears

Some pages stop loading additional content until you scroll gradually, or they use an inner scroll panel instead of the browser window. Select the actual scrollable panel and allow lazy-loaded images to finish appearing. If the site requires a login, sign in before starting the capture.

The first combination fails

A red status generally means ShareX could not find a usable match between its first frames. Reopen the command, select a smaller stable region, remove overlays and try again. If the browser zoom is unusual, return it to a common level such as 100 percent and repeat.

Blank, duplicated or torn sections

Do not edit around a bad seam until you have tried a new capture. Duplicates usually indicate that the scroll increment or matching area was obscured by a fixed element. A blank section can result from a page still loading; wait for images and fonts to render before selecting the region.

Windows 7 and ShareX compatibility

The ShareX pages describing scrolling capture establish how the feature works, but they do not establish that a current ShareX release supports every Windows 7 edition. Before installing, check the system requirements for the exact release you intend to use. If that release requires a newer Windows version, look for an older compatible build only from a trustworthy source and understand that older software may lack security and bug fixes.

Regardless of the utility, also check available disk space. A stitched image can be much taller than a normal screenshot, especially when captured at a high display scale. Keep the browser window at a consistent size and avoid resizing it while capture is running.

Choose the right capture method

Method Best for Scrolling support Main limitation
Snipping Tool One visible area, window or desktop Not shown in the documented modes Hidden content requires multiple manual captures.
ShareX scrolling capture A long webpage or document on the Windows desktop Yes; successive frames are stitched Fixed, animated or hover-sensitive elements can disrupt matching.
ScreenshotNeo API Automated webpage images, PDFs or server-side jobs Yes; request a full-page capture Requires an API key and an internet request rather than a local desktop action.

Use Snipping Tool when the target fits on screen. Use ShareX when you need a one-off capture from a Windows desktop and can control the page. Use an API when captures must run repeatedly, from scripts, or without opening a browser interactively.

Or skip the browser setup

For a webpage, ScreenshotNeo returns a full-page image or PDF from one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter list. This cURL request saves a full-page WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same capture in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the example URL with the page you need and store the returned bytes as an image or PDF according to your request options. ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation. You can also choose PDF paper size, margins, orientation and page ranges; resize images, set a transparent background, select a cache TTL, create signed image links, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call and query usage through its API.

Every feature is included on every plan: 1,000 shots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing provides two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get the API key.

FAQ

Can I make Snipping Tool scroll automatically?

The documented Windows 7 modes do not include a scrolling command. Use a scrolling utility or an API for content below the visible screen.

Why does a long screenshot have repeated text?

The stitching algorithm failed to identify the exact overlap between frames, often because a fixed or animated element changed. Recapture with a tighter, stable region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can scrolling capture save a PDF?

ShareX’s described workflow produces a combined image. If you specifically need a PDF, use a webpage-to-PDF function such as ScreenshotNeo’s capture_pdf tool or PDF options.

Will this work on every Windows 7 computer?

Snipping Tool is part of the Windows instructions cited above, but ShareX support depends on the exact release. Verify that release’s requirements before installation.
