For most KDE Plasma users, Spectacle is the best screenshot tool to start with. It is KDE’s native utility, with capture modes for the desktop, monitor, window, and selected region, plus annotation and straightforward save, copy, print, and open-in-another-app options. Choose Ksnip or Flameshot when their particular markup workflows fit you better, but check the Wayland behavior and package version in your distribution before switching.

This guide compares the three desktop tools by workflow rather than claiming a universal winner. It also covers the version-sensitive features, how to check your session type, what to test before committing, and an unrelated-but-useful option for developers who need screenshots of websites rather than their Plasma desktop: ScreenshotNeo.

Which screenshot tool should you choose?

Start with the tool that matches the job. Spectacle is the default recommendation for ordinary desktop captures and editing. Ksnip is worth considering for its extended image-markup features and pinning. Flameshot suits users who want an interactive annotation workflow and configurable shortcuts. Wayland behavior, available capture modes, and shortcut reliability can vary with the Plasma version and distribution package, so verify your own setup.

What you need Best starting point What to check
Quick captures in Plasma’s native workflow Spectacle Choose among its capture modes and save, copy, print, or open the result in another application.
Recognize text in screenshots Spectacle on a sufficiently recent Plasma release KDE identifies screenshot text recognition as a Plasma 6.6 feature; confirm that your distribution’s installed release includes it.
More annotation controls, blur or pixelation, pinning, or image workflow options Ksnip Its project documents these functions, but also notes Wayland hotkey limitations and a Plasma screenshot issue; verify current behavior.
Interactive capture markup and configurable shortcuts Flameshot Follow the project’s KDE shortcut setup and check its Wayland troubleshooting guidance against your versions.
Screen recording with audio Spectacle, if your installed release includes it KDE described audio recording in the Plasma 6.8 development stream in July 2026; do not assume it is in every stable package.

The comparison is based on features and limitations documented by the respective projects, not hands-on benchmark testing. There are no reliable comparative speed or performance figures here.

1. Spectacle: the sensible default

Spectacle is KDE’s screenshot utility and the strongest first choice if you want a tool that fits naturally into Plasma. KDE documents captures of the full desktop, current monitor, active window, window under the cursor, or a rectangular region. After capture, you can annotate and then save, print, copy, or open the image in another application. See the Spectacle Handbook.

What makes it a good everyday choice

  • Several useful capture boundaries: select a whole desktop or monitor, a window, or a precise region, depending on what you need to share.
  • Editing is part of the flow: add annotations before exporting rather than requiring a separate editor for every small change.
  • Familiar Plasma integration: it is the natural place to begin before adding another screenshot application and its own shortcut configuration.

KDE’s Plasma 6.6 release announcement, dated 2026-02-17, identifies text extraction from screenshots as a new capability. Whether you can use it depends on the Plasma version delivered by your distribution; a distribution may package a different release or backport changes. Check the installed version and the feature’s availability locally rather than assuming that every system labeled Plasma 6 has it. The release announcement is at KDE Plasma 6.6.

Audio recording is version-dependent

A KDE post dated 2026-07-11 describes audio recording in Spectacle’s screen-recording workflow in the Plasma 6.8 development stream, including microphone audio, system audio, or both. That is a development-stream description, not proof that the feature is present in every stable distribution release. Confirm that your installed Spectacle and Plasma build expose the recording options before relying on them. Read the KDE update on audio recording in Spectacle.

2. Ksnip: when annotation and image handling matter more

Ksnip is a third-party screenshot utility to consider when Spectacle’s annotation workflow does not cover your needs. The project lists markup tools, blur and pixelation, cropping, stickers, watermarks, pinning, and an OCR plugin. Those options can make Ksnip attractive if your usual task is not simply capturing an image, but preparing it for a bug report, explanation, or reference while keeping it visible on screen.

Its project documentation also calls out two compatibility points: global hotkeys do not work under Wayland, and it flags screenshot issues on KDE Plasma versions at or above 5.80. That version threshold and behavior should be checked against the current release and package you plan to use; do not infer that an issue described in project documentation necessarily affects every current installation. Consult the Ksnip project for its feature and compatibility notes.

Choose it for a specific workflow

  • Pick Ksnip if you need its documented combination of markup, blur or pixelation, cropping, stickers, or watermarks.
  • Consider it if pinning a capture or its OCR plugin addresses a recurring task.
  • Before relying on global shortcuts, test them in your actual Wayland or X11 session and distribution package.

3. Flameshot: interactive markup with shortcut setup

Flameshot is another annotation-oriented option. Its project documents KDE shortcut configuration and portal-based capture, and maintains a dedicated KDE Wayland help page. That is useful guidance, but not a universal compatibility guarantee: screenshot behavior depends on the current Plasma and Flameshot versions and the desktop’s capture interfaces. Start with the project’s Flameshot repository and its KDE Wayland help page.

Flameshot makes sense if you prefer selecting a capture interactively and marking it up as part of that action, and are willing to configure a shortcut if needed. If capture works but a shortcut does not, treat those as separate issues: test the capture path first, then follow the project’s KDE shortcut instructions for your session.

How to choose reliably on Wayland or X11

Do not judge a third-party tool’s Wayland support by how it behaves under X11, or assume that one distribution’s package represents all Plasma installations. Wayland capture goes through compositor and portal interfaces, and the available behavior can differ by environment. Ksnip explicitly documents its Wayland global-hotkey limitation and a Plasma screenshot issue; Flameshot provides a specific Wayland troubleshooting guide.

  1. Identify your session. Check whether your current desktop session is Wayland or X11 before comparing results. Test in the session you actually use.
  2. Check the installed versions. Record your Plasma, Spectacle, and third-party tool versions. Distribution release cadence and packaging determine which features and fixes you have.
  3. Test your real capture modes. Try the specific full-screen, monitor, window, or region captures you use—not just a single screenshot.
  4. Test shortcuts independently. Verify keyboard shortcuts separately from launching the application and capturing through its interface.
  5. Check where the image goes. Test saving to a file and copying to the clipboard, along with any handoff to an image editor or other application that matters to you.
  6. Try your annotation workflow. Confirm that the markup, blur, pinning, or text-recognition feature you need is available in your installed version.

This small check is more useful than choosing by feature list alone: it distinguishes a tool’s advertised capability from what your particular session and package can do.

Practical verdict by use case

  • Choose Spectacle first for general screenshots, KDE integration, and the standard capture-and-share workflow.
  • Choose Ksnip if its extra markup or pinning matters, after checking its current Wayland and Plasma compatibility notes.
  • Choose Flameshot if interactive annotation is the deciding factor and you are prepared to configure and test shortcuts.
  • For screenshot OCR, look for Plasma 6.6 or later availability in your distribution rather than assuming it from the desktop’s major version.
  • For screen recording with audio, confirm the feature exists in your installed build; the July 2026 description is for the Plasma 6.8 development stream.

Or skip the browser setup

The tools above capture your KDE desktop. If what you need is a screenshot of a website, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. It removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
