The dependable way to install Chrome without user prompts is to deploy the Google Chrome Enterprise MSI through Windows Installer from an elevated PowerShell session. Use Start-Process with /i, /qn, /norestart, a verbose log, and -Wait -PassThru so your deployment system can act on the installer exit code.

$msi = 'C:Installgooglechromestandaloneenterprise64.msi'
$proc = Start-Process -FilePath 'msiexec.exe' -ArgumentList @('/i', $msi, '/qn', '/norestart', '/L*v', 'C:WindowsTempChromeInstall.log') -Wait -PassThru
if ($proc.ExitCode -ne 0) { throw "Chrome installation failed with exit code $($proc.ExitCode)" }

This article explains how to prepare the MSI, run it locally or through management software, verify the result, diagnose failures, and scale the deployment.

What you need before running the command

  • The Chrome Enterprise MSI. Obtain the current package from Google’s enterprise download channel. Select the architecture that matches the endpoint.
  • Administrative execution. Run PowerShell elevated, or launch it through a device-management agent running as SYSTEM.
  • A controlled package location. Keep the MSI on a protected local path or an approved network share. Ensure the deployment account can read it.
  • A test ring. Google recommends piloting the package before broad rollout. Test installation, launch, policy application, and upgrade behavior on representative computers.

Quote the MSI path whenever it contains spaces. The MSI must be newer than the Chrome version already deployed: Google warns that an older MSI cannot overwrite a newer deployed version.

The silent PowerShell installation

Save the following as a PowerShell script or paste it into an elevated PowerShell window:

$msi = 'C:Installgooglechromestandaloneenterprise64.msi'
$log = 'C:WindowsTempChromeInstall.log'

$arguments = @(
    '/i'
    $msi
    '/qn'
    '/norestart'
    '/L*v'
    $log
)

$proc = Start-Process -FilePath 'msiexec.exe' -ArgumentList $arguments -Wait -PassThru

if ($proc.ExitCode -ne 0) {
    throw "Chrome installation failed with exit code $($proc.ExitCode). See $log"
}

Write-Host 'Chrome installation completed successfully.'

/i tells Windows Installer to install the package. /qn selects the no-UI mode, so no wizard or progress window is shown. /norestart prevents the installer from initiating a restart as part of this operation. /L*v writes a verbose log, while -Wait keeps the script from finishing before msiexec.exe does. -PassThru exposes the process result so the script can reject a nonzero exit code.

Google’s documented pattern

Google documents the compact silent form msiexec /q /l GoogleChrome.msi. In deployment wrappers, /qn is the explicit Windows Installer no-UI form and a full log path is easier to collect:

msiexec.exe /i 'C:Installgooglechromestandaloneenterprise64.msi' /qn /norestart /L*v 'C:WindowsTempChromeInstall.log'

What the MSI changes on a Windows computer

Installing Chrome from the MSI is a system deployment, not the same operation as a user downloading the consumer installer. Google states: “Installing Chrome browser from an MSI overrides any version of Chrome browser installed by a user.” User-level Chrome normally resides below %USER DATA%GoogleChromeApplication; system-level Chrome resides below Program FilesGoogleChromeApplication.

Because the MSI can supersede a user-level installation, test existing profiles and extensions before production rollout. The version rule still applies: an older MSI will not overwrite a newer deployed Chrome version.

Choosing a deployment method

Method Execution context Visibility Best use
PowerShell plus msiexec Elevated administrator or management agent Quiet with /qn; detailed log available One-off installs, scripted jobs, and custom orchestration
Active Directory Group Policy Computer or user policy, depending on configuration Managed and repeatable Domain-joined Windows fleets
Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager Device-management agent Quiet, with deployment reporting Organizations already using Configuration Manager
Other software-distribution tools Usually device or SYSTEM context Controlled by the tool Existing endpoint-management platforms

Google lists Active Directory Group Policy, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, SMS, and other software-distribution tools as MSI distribution options. PowerShell is useful inside any of those systems because it can stage the file, invoke Windows Installer, preserve the log, and return a failure to the management platform.

A safer script for repeatable deployment

For a fleet, add checks before invoking Windows Installer. This example verifies the file exists, creates the log directory, and stops on a failed process:

$ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop'
$msi = 'C:Installgooglechromestandaloneenterprise64.msi'
$logDirectory = 'C:WindowsTemp'
$log = Join-Path $logDirectory 'ChromeInstall.log'

if (-not (Test-Path -LiteralPath $msi -PathType Leaf)) {
    throw "MSI not found: $msi"
}

New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path $logDirectory -Force | Out-Null

$proc = Start-Process -FilePath 'msiexec.exe' -ArgumentList @(
    '/i', $msi,
    '/qn',
    '/norestart',
    '/L*v', $log
) -Wait -PassThru

if ($proc.ExitCode -ne 0) {
    throw "Chrome installation failed with exit code $($proc.ExitCode). Log: $log"
}

Write-Output "Installed Chrome from $msi"
Write-Output "Installer log: $log"

When embedding this in a management product, return the thrown error to that product rather than swallowing it. Preserve the log until the deployment is confirmed, then apply your organization’s normal log-retention policy.

Deploying to multiple Windows computers

  1. Download and stage. Put the current Enterprise MSI in the software-distribution system or a protected share. Confirm the package architecture matches the target devices.
  2. Define the computer scope. Device-level deployment is appropriate when Chrome should install regardless of whether a user is signed in. User-level policies apply to specific signed-in users.
  3. Run in the device context. Configure the tool to execute the PowerShell wrapper elevated or as SYSTEM. A standard user session may not have permission to install system software.
  4. Start with a pilot group. Include different Windows builds, existing Chrome versions, and typical user profiles.
  5. Refresh policy when using Group Policy. On a test computer, run gpupdate /force to request an immediate policy refresh.
  6. Verify outcomes. Confirm that Chrome launches, the expected system installation exists, and the management product records success. Keep failed-device logs for diagnosis.
  7. Expand gradually. Move from pilot to larger groups only after the package behaves correctly with your policies and existing installations.

Managing Chrome after installation

Installation and policy management are separate tasks. Google’s Windows deployment guidance covers policy configuration through Windows Group Policy or cloud policies, and Google supplies policy templates for managed Windows PCs. Device-level policies apply whether or not a user is signed in; user-level policies apply to particular signed-in users.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

On each pilot computer, open chrome://policy to inspect effective policies. This verifies what Chrome actually received rather than what you intended to deploy. Chrome Enterprise Core is Google’s cloud-management option for managed Chrome deployments.

Verification checklist

  • Check the Windows Installer log at the path passed to /L*v.
  • Confirm the process exit code is zero in the deployment system.
  • Launch Chrome locally and confirm it opens for an ordinary user.
  • Check whether the system installation is present under Program FilesGoogleChromeApplication.
  • Open chrome://policy and confirm expected managed settings are effective.
  • If Group Policy is involved, run gpupdate /force, wait for processing, and check the policy page again.
  • Test an existing user profile, extensions, and sign-in behavior before expanding the rollout.

Troubleshooting silent Chrome installations

The script says the MSI is missing

The path is wrong, the share is unavailable, or the deployment account cannot read it. Use Test-Path -LiteralPath under the same account that will run the installer. Copying the package to a local staging directory can separate network-access problems from installer problems.

Nothing appears on screen

That is expected with /qn. Do not use the absence of a wizard as evidence of failure. Wait for the process, inspect the exit code, and read the verbose log.

The installer returns a nonzero exit code

Open the log named in the error. Check that the process ran elevated, the MSI is readable, the architecture is correct, and the package is not older than the Chrome version already deployed. Correct the underlying condition, then retry on the test device.

A newer Chrome version remains installed

An older MSI cannot overwrite a newer deployed Chrome version. Obtain a current Enterprise MSI and compare the package version with the endpoint before scheduling another deployment.

Chrome installs but policies are absent

Installation does not prove policy delivery. Check whether the policy is device-level or user-level, refresh Group Policy with gpupdate /force when applicable, and inspect chrome://policy while signed in as the affected user.

The deployment works manually but fails through management software

The execution context is usually different. A management agent may run as SYSTEM, use another working directory, or lack access to a mapped drive. Use absolute paths, a controlled local or UNC location, and log files in a directory available to the device account.

Operational and cost considerations

Silent installation removes interactive prompts, but it does not remove the need for staging, testing, logging, or version control. A verbose MSI log consumes disk space, so select a retention period and collect only what your support process needs. Keep the MSI current because version precedence can turn an apparently successful deployment into a no-op when the package is older than the endpoint.

For a small number of computers, the PowerShell wrapper is usually the simplest approach. For a large fleet, Group Policy, Configuration Manager, or another software-distribution platform adds targeting and reporting; keep the same exit-code and logging discipline inside the package.

Or skip the browser setup

If your next task is taking screenshots of the sites you deploy or test, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is separate from Chrome installation: one request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.

With the API, cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does /norestart guarantee that Windows will never reboot?

No. It tells Windows Installer not to initiate a restart for this installation. Coordinate any required maintenance-window restart separately through your device-management system.

Should I keep the MSI log on every endpoint permanently?

Not necessarily. Keep verbose logs through the pilot and until failures are resolved, then apply your organization’s normal retention and deletion policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the current Chrome Enterprise MSI, run msiexec.exe through an elevated PowerShell process with /qn, /norestart, and /L*v, wait for and evaluate the exit code, then pilot and verify policies before expanding deployment.
