Use Google Sheets’ native IMAGE function. For a direct image URL, enter =IMAGE("https://example.com/image.jpg"). If the URL is in cell A2, enter =IMAGE(A2). Sheets then renders the image inside the formula cell.
The source must be a publicly reachable image URL with a protocol such as https://. The documented function syntax is IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]).
Use the IMAGE function
There are two normal ways to supply the URL:
- URL written in the formula:
=IMAGE("https://example.com/image.jpg") - URL stored in another cell:
=IMAGE(A2)
The second method is usually better for a list. Put one image URL in each row of column A, place the formula in column B, and fill it down. Each row will display the image associated with its URL.
Step-by-step
- Open the Google Sheet and select the cell where the image should appear.
- Type
=IMAGE(. - Either paste a quoted URL, such as
"https://example.com/image.jpg", or select the cell containing the URL, such asA2. - Close the parenthesis and press Enter.
- Adjust the row height and column width if the image needs more room.
IMAGE syntax and sizing modes
The optional mode, height, and width arguments control how the image is fitted. The cell itself is not automatically resized by any mode.

| Formula example | Mode | Result |
|---|---|---|
=IMAGE(A2) or =IMAGE(A2,1) |
1 (default) | Fits the image inside the cell while preserving its aspect ratio. |
=IMAGE(A2,2) |
2 | Stretches or compresses the image to fill the cell, ignoring the original aspect ratio. |
=IMAGE(A2,3) |
3 | Uses the original image size; a cell that is too small can crop the visible result. |
=IMAGE(A2,4,120,200) |
4 | Uses custom dimensions: 120 pixels high and 200 pixels wide. |
For mode 4, height comes before width. For example, =IMAGE("https://example.com/photo.png",4,160,240) requests a 160-pixel height and 240-pixel width. Set the corresponding row and column dimensions separately so the cell can show the requested area.
Build a URL-to-image column
Basic two-column layout
Put labels or product IDs in column A and direct image URLs in column B. In C2, use:
=IF(B2="","",IMAGE(B2,1))
This leaves C2 blank when there is no URL and otherwise uses the default fit mode. Copy the formula down the column. For fixed thumbnails, use =IF(B2="","",IMAGE(B2,4,100,100)), then make the rows and column C wide enough for 100-by-100-pixel images.
Keep the URL separate
Do not replace the URL column with the image formula if you may need to inspect, update, or export the links later. Keeping the raw URL in its own column makes broken links easier to identify and lets you change the display size without rebuilding the data.

You can add a text fallback with IFERROR:
=IF(B2="","",IFERROR(IMAGE(B2,1),"Image unavailable"))
This is useful in reports where an error message is preferable to a cell that appears empty. It does not repair the URL; it only supplies a readable fallback when Sheets cannot render it.

What counts as a usable image URL?
IMAGE needs the image resource itself, not a normal web page that merely contains an image. A link to an HTML gallery, a product page, or a login screen will not normally provide the image bytes that the function expects.
- Include a complete protocol, such as
https://. - Make the resource publicly reachable without a sign-in, local-network access, or an interactive step.
- Use a supported raster format such as PNG, JPG, or GIF.
- Do not use a URL hosted at
drive.google.com; the documented function does not support Drive-hosted URLs. - Do not use SVG files; SVG is not supported by the documented
IMAGEfunction.
A URL does not have to end in .jpg or .png to be valid. What matters is that the server returns an image that Sheets can retrieve, rather than an HTML page, redirect requiring authentication, or unsupported file type.
Resize the cell as well as the image
IMAGE controls the rendered image, not the sheet grid. To make a thumbnail readable:
- Choose a sizing mode, usually mode 1 for an undistorted thumbnail or mode 4 for a fixed size.
- Right-click the row number and choose Resize row, then enter a suitable height.
- Right-click the column letter and choose Resize column, then enter a suitable width.
- Check several rows with different aspect ratios. Mode 1 preserves each image’s proportions, so images will not all occupy the same visual shape unless their source dimensions are similar.
Mode 2 can make every cell look uniform, but it may visibly distort faces, logos, or product packaging. Mode 3 is appropriate only when the original dimensions are small enough for the cell or when cropping is acceptable.
Formula versus Insert > Image
Google Sheets also provides a menu-based method: choose Insert > Image, then select either Image in cell or Image over cells.
| Approach | Location | URL relationship | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
IMAGE formula |
Inside a cell | Remains tied to the URL in the formula or referenced cell | Lists, catalogs, and many rows populated from a URL column |
| Insert > Image > Image in cell | Inside a cell | Added through the Sheets interface | Manual placement when you do not need formulas |
| Insert > Image > Image over cells | Floating above the grid | Independent of the cell’s formula layout | Logos, diagrams, and visual elements positioned freely on a sheet |
Use the formula when the URL is data and should be repeated down many rows. Use Image over cells when the graphic should move independently of the grid.

Troubleshooting IMAGE errors
The cell shows an error or no image
- Check the protocol: change a bare domain such as
example.com/photo.jpgto a complete URL beginning withhttps://. - Open the URL in a private browser window: if it asks for a login, cookie interaction, or a local-network connection, Sheets may not be able to fetch it.
- Inspect the response: a page that displays an image is not necessarily the image URL. Obtain the direct image resource instead.
- Check the file type: replace SVG or an unsupported response with PNG, JPG, or GIF.
- Remove Drive links: Drive-hosted URLs are not supported by the documented IMAGE function.
- Check the formula punctuation: the URL must be quoted when written directly, while a cell reference such as A2 is not quoted.
The image is stretched
Change mode 2 to mode 1, or omit the mode argument. Mode 2 deliberately ignores the original aspect ratio.
The image is cut off
Mode 3 preserves the original dimensions and can exceed the cell. Increase the row height and column width, or use mode 1 or mode 4.
Custom dimensions do not work
Use mode 4 and provide both dimensions in the correct order: =IMAGE(A2,4,height,width). For example, =IMAGE(A2,4,120,200). A height or width supplied without mode 4 is not the documented custom-size form.
A URL works in a browser but not in Sheets
Browsers can follow interactive redirects, send stored credentials, and execute page scripts. IMAGE needs a retrievable image URL. Test the final resource without being signed in and confirm that it returns the image itself rather than an HTML document.
The formula is rejected because of a volatile reference
The function reference warns that volatile functions cannot be referenced directly or indirectly in the URL’s base portion. Replace a volatile URL-building expression with a stable cell value or a nonvolatile formula, then reference that result from IMAGE.
When the URL is a webpage, not an image
If your starting URL points to a webpage and you need a picture of that page, IMAGE alone is the wrong tool. First create a PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshot, host that file at a publicly reachable URL, and then use that image URL in Sheets. This is also the route for pages whose useful visual content is assembled by JavaScript after loading.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Send one GET request with a webpage URL and it returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API to create the image file, then make that file available at a public image URL for the Sheets IMAGE formula. The complete parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Practical reliability and cost considerations
- Keep source URLs stable: if a remote file is renamed, deleted, access-restricted, or replaced with HTML, the rendered result can fail.
- Prefer appropriately sized source images: very large originals can make a sheet slower to work with, while tiny originals will look soft when enlarged.
- Use a fixed mode for catalogs: mode 4 makes rows visually consistent, but choose dimensions that fit the sheet’s actual row and column sizes.
- Separate capture from display: when a webpage must become an image, generate and host the screenshot first; let Sheets handle only the final image URL.
- Review access rights: a sheet can contain a formula that references a public URL, but the image source’s availability and licensing remain the responsibility of the URL owner.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can IMAGE use a URL that expires?
Yes, while the URL remains valid and publicly reachable. After it expires or requires authorization, the cell may no longer be able to render the image; use a stable public URL for long-lived sheets.
Can I put a PDF URL directly inside IMAGE?
No. IMAGE is for image resources such as PNG, JPG, or GIF. Convert the PDF page to an image first, then reference the resulting image URL.
Does IMAGE download the image into my spreadsheet as a permanent copy?
The formula points to the supplied URL and renders it in the cell. Treat the source URL as a dependency rather than assuming the sheet is an independent archive.
