To take a portrait screenshot, first display the content vertically, then use your phone’s normal screenshot control. On most Android phones, press Power and Volume Down together. On some models, open the Power menu and tap Screenshot. On iPhone, use the button combination for your specific model; Apple saves the result in Photos. “Portrait mode” can also mean a camera effect that blurs the background, which is a different feature explained below.

What “portrait mode screenshot” means

A portrait screenshot is a screen capture whose content is arranged vertically, usually taller than it is wide. It is not a special image format and does not require the camera’s Portrait mode. The screenshot records what is visible on the display at the moment you capture it.

Camera Portrait mode has a different meaning. It is a photography effect that keeps a subject sharp while blurring the background. Samsung may label related controls Portrait or Live Focus, and availability varies by device. To capture the camera interface itself, open that interface and take an ordinary screenshot. To create a portrait photograph, open Camera and select Portrait (or the equivalent mode) before taking the photo.

Before you capture: make the screen vertical

  1. Open the page, message, app screen, map, document or settings panel you want to save.
  2. Turn the phone upright. If automatic rotation is enabled, the interface should switch to its portrait layout.
  3. Wait for the layout to finish reflowing. A page that is still loading may produce a screenshot with missing images or controls.
  4. Close notifications, menus or overlays that you do not want in the image.
  5. Take the screenshot using the instructions for your platform.

The saved image normally mirrors the orientation and layout shown on screen. Screenshot controls alone do not establish a universal way to force an app that is locked to landscape into portrait. Look for a portrait layout inside the app or consult the phone and app’s current help. If the saved file is sideways, check the app’s orientation behavior and your device’s rotation settings.

Android: take a portrait screenshot

Method 1: Power plus Volume Down

  1. Display the screen vertically.
  2. Press the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons promptly. A preview, animation or notification should indicate that the screenshot was taken.
  4. Tap the preview to edit or share, or open your gallery/photos app to find the saved image.

This is Google’s common Android method, but button placement and behavior can differ by manufacturer, model and Android version.

Method 2: Screenshot from the Power menu

  1. Press and hold the Power button.
  2. Choose Screenshot if that command appears.
  3. Open the preview or your gallery to crop, annotate, share or delete the capture.

If neither method works, use the handset manufacturer’s support site. Some phones add gestures, quick-settings tiles or accessibility commands, but their names and availability are model-specific.

Android orientation and long pages

A portrait screenshot captures the current viewport unless your phone or app offers a scrolling or full-page option after capture. If an app remains landscape, rotate the device and check whether the app provides a portrait layout; do not assume that a third-party rotation utility will work safely in every app. For private screens, remember that screenshots may include account names, messages, addresses or other sensitive data.

iPhone: use the controls for your model

Apple’s screenshot instructions are model-dependent. Use the built-in button combination documented for your particular iPhone, then open the thumbnail that appears or go to Photos to edit and share the image. Avoid applying one shortcut to every iPhone: models with and without a Home button use different controls, and Apple can change guidance as iOS evolves.

Taking a screenshot of the Portrait controls

Open the camera in Portrait mode so its controls are visible, then use the ordinary Android or iPhone screenshot method. The resulting file is a screenshot of the interface, not a depth-of-field photograph. To save the actual portrait image, press the camera shutter and find the photo in your camera roll.

Troubleshooting portrait screenshots

The phone does nothing

  • Press the buttons simultaneously rather than holding one several seconds first.
  • Try the Power-menu Screenshot command on Android.
  • Remove a thick case temporarily if it prevents a button from registering.
  • Restart the phone and check the manufacturer’s current instructions.

The image is sideways

  • Rotate the phone before pressing the screenshot controls.
  • Wait for the app to redraw after rotation.
  • Check whether the app is locked to landscape or has its own orientation setting.
  • Use the editor’s rotate command only if changing the image orientation is acceptable; rotation does not change the app’s layout.

The app stays in landscape

Many games, video players, camera previews and specialized tools intentionally lock orientation. Check the app’s settings or help. There is no single platform-wide portrait override established for every app, and forcing rotation can produce clipped or incorrectly scaled content.

  • Dismiss transient overlays before capturing.
  • Try again after unlocking the device if the app restricts screenshots on sensitive screens.
  • Some banking, streaming and enterprise apps deliberately block screenshots for security or licensing reasons; use an approved export or share function instead.

You cannot find the file

Check the device’s screenshots album or search “Screenshots” in the photos app. Confirm that the capture actually produced a preview, and check available storage if repeated attempts fail.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a portrait image of a public webpage rather than your phone’s current screen, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from one GET request. Set a portrait viewport or device preset in the request; the service supports full-page capture, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, element capture, dark mode and more. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots monthly without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Start with a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Practical quality and privacy checklist

  • Use portrait orientation before capture, not after, when the layout itself matters.
  • Wait for fonts, images and dynamic content to settle.
  • Review the preview for private information, notifications and pointer overlays.
  • Crop only after confirming that the complete context is no longer needed.
  • For documentation, record the device model and operating-system version so another person can reproduce the view.
  • For web automation, choose a viewport and wait condition explicitly, and inspect the response verdict before treating the file as valid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a portrait screenshot while the phone is locked to landscape?

Only if the app or device provides a supported portrait layout or orientation control. The normal screenshot shortcut records the rendered screen and does not universally override an app’s landscape lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a portrait screenshot the same as a Portrait-mode photo?

No. A portrait screenshot is a capture of a vertically displayed interface. A Portrait-mode photo uses depth-of-field processing to blur the background.

Why does my phone’s screenshot look different from the screen I saw?

The app may have redrawn during rotation, loaded content after the capture, hidden protected content, or applied its own orientation and scaling rules.
