Guest or host: choose where to take the screenshot
A virtual machine has two relevant operating systems: the guest is Windows running inside the VM, and the host is the physical computer running the virtualization software. A guest capture uses Windows’ own screenshot tools. A host capture uses the hypervisor or the host’s screenshot tool to capture the VM display.
- Use the guest for a crop, a particular window, or a capture you plan to annotate in Windows.
- Use the host when you want the VM display saved directly to a host file, or when a keyboard shortcut is being intercepted.
- Use a host screenshot tool if you want to document how the VM appears inside its application window. It may capture the window frame or other host interface as well as the guest display.
These methods capture at different layers. A screenshot of the VM window is not necessarily the same image as a Windows screenshot: the host capture can include surrounding virtualization-app UI, while the guest capture is made from within Windows.
Take a screenshot inside the Windows guest
Capture a region, window, or full screen with Snipping Tool
- Click inside the VM so the guest has keyboard focus.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S. Windows opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip, then make the capture.
- Open the Snipping Tool window to edit, save, or share the image. Use Ctrl + S to save, or Ctrl + C to copy. Microsoft also documents Alt + D for setting a delay.
This is the most flexible built-in option when you need only part of the display or a particular window. Microsoft documents the shortcut and capture options for Windows 10 and Windows 11; the exact interface can vary by Windows release.

Copy the full screen with Print Screen
Press PrtSc (Print Screen) in the Windows guest to copy a static image of the full screen to the clipboard. Paste it into an image editor or document to use it. This method copies the image rather than being the same as saving a PNG directly to the host.
Do not confuse Windows key + Shift + S, the documented image-capture shortcut, with Windows key + Shift + R, which Microsoft documents for video capture.
Save the guest display directly from VirtualBox
If Windows shortcuts are reaching the host, or you need a PNG file without using the guest’s clipboard, VirtualBox has a host-side screenshot command. Oracle documents this syntax for VirtualBox 7.1.8:

Oracle specifies display 0 for a single-monitor guest display; the optional display argument identifies which guest display to capture. Use a destination path writable by the host account running the command. The command saves a PNG file.
Command syntax can vary by VirtualBox release. Check the manual for the version installed on your host rather than assuming the 7.1.8 syntax applies unchanged to every version.
Get a guest screenshot onto the host
A screenshot saved inside Windows initially belongs to the guest’s filesystem. To use it on the host, save it in a location accessible to both systems, use a configured shared or redirected resource, or transfer it through an integration supported by the VM setup.
Hyper-V with Enhanced Session Mode
Microsoft documents Enhanced Session Mode for Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection (VMConnect). It connects to virtual machines using RDP and can make selected local resources available. The host’s Enhanced Session Mode policy and settings must be enabled, and local resources must be selected before connecting. Resource redirection is configuration-dependent, so do not assume every session automatically shares the clipboard or host folders.

Fix shortcuts that go to the wrong computer
Whether a key combination reaches the guest or host depends on keyboard focus, the virtualization application’s key-capture behavior, and its configuration. There is no universal forwarding rule for every VM application.
- The host opens its screenshot tool: click inside the VM first, then try again. If the host still intercepts the shortcut, launch Snipping Tool from the guest Start menu instead.
- Nothing happens in the guest: confirm that the VM has keyboard focus and check the virtualization application’s keyboard-capture or host-key controls. Keyboard layouts and VM integration settings can affect key combinations.
- You need a direct file despite shortcut problems: use the hypervisor’s host-side capture feature where available. For VirtualBox 7.1.8, use the documented screenshot command above.

Troubleshooting and practical limits
The screenshot is on the guest, but I cannot find it on the host
Check where the guest saved the file: a path such as the Windows guest’s Pictures folder is not automatically a host folder. Transfer it through a shared folder or redirected resource only if that integration is enabled and configured. With Hyper-V, Enhanced Session Mode can expose selected local resources when enabled, but it is not automatic in every setup.
The host screenshot includes borders or controls
A screenshot taken with the host operating system’s screenshot tool captures what is visible in the virtualization application. Maximize or crop the window as needed, or use the hypervisor’s guest-display capture feature if it provides one. VirtualBox’s command saves the guest display as a PNG.
The captured image is the wrong display
For a multi-monitor VirtualBox guest, specify the display argument appropriate to the display you need. Oracle identifies 0 as the display for a single-monitor guest; confirm the installed VirtualBox version’s manual for syntax and display behavior.
Print Screen or Windows key combinations behave differently than expected
Keyboard focus, host interception, keyboard layout, and the VM application’s capture controls can change which system receives a shortcut. Focus the guest and check the VM’s keyboard controls. If forwarding remains unreliable, open Snipping Tool from the guest Start menu or use host-side capture.

The screenshot is copied but not saved
Print Screen places an image on the clipboard. Paste it into an editor or document and save it there, or use Snipping Tool and press Ctrl + S to save the capture.

Does Windows key + Shift + S take a screenshot of the whole VM?

Can I capture a VM while Windows is locked or showing a boot screen?
