Microsoft Clarity is the clearest starting point if you want a heatmap tool with a documented WordPress setup and publicly stated free pricing. Other names worth evaluating include Hotjar, Mouseflow, StatCounter, Contentsquare, Crazy Egg, FullStory, VWO, and Lucky Orange—but the available evidence does not support ranking all nine or confirming their current WordPress features and prices. Use the list below as a shortlist, then verify each vendor’s current terms before choosing.

What a WordPress heatmap can tell you

Heatmaps visualize visitor interactions, such as clicks and scrolling, so you can spot where people engage with a page and how far they move through it. They are useful for identifying patterns to investigate—for example, whether visitors reach an important section or click an element you want them to use. A heatmap shows behavior; it does not, by itself, establish why someone acted that way.

Some services pair heatmaps with session recordings or other behavior analytics. Those additional views can help you investigate a pattern, but compare the exact features, privacy controls, data retention, traffic limits, and price for the plan you would use.

9 heatmap tools and plugins to consider

This is a shortlist, not a verified ranking. Microsoft Clarity is the only option here with official pricing and WordPress integration details established in the sources below. Hotjar, Mouseflow, and StatCounter appear in WordPress.org’s heatmaps tag listing; that listing does not endorse them or guarantee current compatibility. The remaining names appear in a 2026 Contentsquare comparison, which is a secondary source rather than confirmation of current vendor features or prices.

Why Microsoft Clarity is a practical first option

Clarity is documented for WordPress, has official setup routes, and Microsoft describes it as free. Microsoft’s pricing page lists unlimited heatmaps, websites, and team members; check the current pricing page because product terms can change.

Heatmaps and reporting details

Microsoft says Clarity includes click and scroll maps and can display them across PC, tablet, and mobile. Its FAQ says heatmap data is available for up to nine months, clicks appear within 30 minutes, and a heatmap takes less than a minute to generate. These are Microsoft’s product statements, not independent performance measurements; verify them in the Clarity FAQ before relying on them for a time-sensitive analysis.

Privacy considerations

Microsoft says Clarity can be used while following privacy regulations, offers text masking, and creates heatmaps from element attributes rather than element content. That is product documentation, not legal advice or a substitute for configuring the site to meet the requirements that apply to you. Review what the tool collects, configure masking and consent appropriately, and consult applicable privacy requirements.

How to add a heatmap tool to WordPress

For Clarity, Microsoft documents a WordPress plugin integration as well as connections through AIOSEO and SEOPress. The precise labels and screens can change, so use Microsoft’s third-party integrations guide for the current steps.

  1. Choose the integration route. Check Microsoft’s integration guide and select its WordPress plugin, AIOSEO, or SEOPress route.
  2. Connect the site to Clarity. Follow the current instructions for the selected integration and confirm the tracking code is installed on the pages you intend to analyze.
  3. Check data collection. Review privacy, consent, and masking settings for your site before collecting visitor behavior data.
  4. Wait for activity, then inspect a page. Microsoft says clicks can appear within 30 minutes and heatmaps take less than a minute to generate; actual results depend on having collected relevant activity.
  5. Compare the view with the page’s purpose. Use click and scroll patterns to identify questions for further investigation, rather than treating a color or interaction pattern as proof of visitor intent.

How to choose among heatmap tools

Before installing a tool, match its documented capabilities to the question you need to answer. Ask vendors or check their current documentation for each point below; the evidence available here does not establish the answers for every product in the shortlist.

  • Heatmap views: Confirm whether it offers click and scroll maps and whether you can separate desktop, tablet, and mobile behavior.
  • Investigation tools: Check whether session replay, funnel analysis, or form analysis is included if you need more context than a heatmap provides.
  • WordPress setup: Verify that the plugin or integration is maintained and compatible with your WordPress setup. A directory listing alone does not establish current compatibility.
  • Privacy controls: Find out how masking, consent, and data collection controls work, then assess them against your site’s obligations.
  • Retention and limits: Check how long data remains available and whether traffic, sessions, sites, or team members are capped on the plan you would use.
  • Total price: Compare the current cost of the relevant plan and required features. Do not assume an advertised free option or a directory listing tells you the full cost of using a service.

What the available comparisons do—and do not—establish

The evidence supports a useful starting shortlist, not a defensible “best nine” ranking: it contains official feature, pricing, and integration information for Clarity, a WordPress.org tag listing for three other plugins, and a secondary comparison naming additional services. It does not establish current vendor-by-vendor pricing, plan limits, compatibility, or a consistent feature comparison for all nine. Treat those as questions to verify directly with each vendor rather than as settled facts.
