Claude Code accesses a real browser through an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. Use Playwright MCP for isolated, repeatable automation; Chrome DevTools MCP for inspecting and debugging a live Chrome session; or Claude in Chrome when Anthropic’s extension needs to work alongside an existing signed-in Chrome workflow. Treat every authenticated browser as sensitive: anything the connected agent can see may be read or changed.
Choose the connection that matches your job

If you are unsure, start with Playwright MCP. It is the safest default for tests because the browser context can be isolated and recreated. Choose a live-browser option only when the state you need is already open in Chrome.
Option 1: Playwright MCP for an isolated browser
Prerequisites
- Install Node.js 20 or newer.
- Have Claude Code installed and authenticated.
- Use a separate test account for any site that requires login.
Install the server
Run this command in your shell:
claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latestRestart or reopen Claude Code if it does not immediately list the new server. In a Claude Code session, ask it to navigate to a harmless page and report the page title. The first navigation may download the browser components required by Playwright.
What Claude can do
Playwright MCP exposes structured accessibility snapshots rather than requiring a vision model for ordinary controls. Claude can navigate, click, type, fill forms, upload files, handle dialogs, take screenshots, create PDFs, read console messages, inspect network activity and make test assertions. It is suitable for regression tests because the same steps can run in a fresh context.

Attach to an existing Chromium process
When the required cookies or tab state already exists, Playwright documents channel and Chrome DevTools Protocol connections. A Chrome or Edge channel can be selected with:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --cdp-endpoint=chromeFor a Chromium process exposing a CDP endpoint, use its URL, for example:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --cdp-endpoint=http://localhost:9222The exact command you register with Claude Code depends on how you launch the MCP server; preserve the endpoint argument in that server configuration. A CDP connection shares the target browser’s tabs, cookies and local storage, so it is not equivalent to Playwright’s clean context.
Option 2: Chrome DevTools MCP for live debugging
Install the Claude Code plugin
In Claude Code, run the marketplace commands:

npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latestAfter installation, connect Claude Code to the Chrome instance you want to inspect. Keep the target tab focused on a development or staging environment whenever possible.
Use it for diagnosis, not just clicks
Chrome DevTools MCP is built for the information that is difficult to obtain from a screenshot alone. Its tools cover clicking and typing, form filling, uploads and dialogs, mobile emulation, screenshots, DOM snapshots, JavaScript execution, console messages, network requests, performance traces, memory snapshots and Lighthouse audits.
A productive debugging request is specific: ask Claude to reproduce the error, capture console exceptions, identify failed network requests, inspect the relevant DOM node and propose a fix. It can then repeat the action and verify whether the symptom changed. JavaScript execution is powerful; limit it to pages and accounts you control.
Option 3: Claude in Chrome for an existing signed-in workflow
Anthropic’s Claude in Chrome extension lets Claude interact directly with websites on your behalf and can be launched from Claude Code. Anthropic documents a build-test-verify loop:

- Build the feature in Claude Code.
- Deploy it to a URL the browser can reach.
- Ask Claude to test and verify the result in Chrome.
- Use console logs, network requests and DOM state to debug failures.
This path is useful for design verification, live debugging and automated testing when your normal workflow already lives in Chrome. Availability is plan- and rollout-dependent. Anthropic’s support information dated August 26, 2026 lists paid Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with possible administrator or regional conditions; check the current plan page before relying on it.

How to protect authenticated browser data
A connected browser is not merely a remote screenshot device. Google warns that an agent able to view and interact with pages can act on your behalf in an active authenticated session. It may read private page content, inspect tokens exposed to the page, submit forms or modify data that the account can access.
Use a dedicated profile
- Create a separate Chrome profile for agent work; do not connect your everyday profile.
- Prefer a narrowly scoped staging or test account with the minimum permissions required.
- Sign out of banking, email, password managers and unrelated administration consoles.
- Do not place production credentials in cookies or local storage used by an experimental agent.
- Review the target tab and origin before allowing navigation or form submission.
Choose isolation for automation
For CI and regression suites, use Playwright’s isolated context. It gives each run a predictable starting state and reduces accidental access to unrelated cookies. Seed only the test data the scenario needs, then discard the context after the run.
Use live access deliberately
Chrome DevTools MCP, Claude in Chrome and CDP attachment are appropriate when reproducing a bug that depends on a real session. Close unrelated tabs, revoke the test account when the investigation ends and keep organizational approval requirements in mind.
A practical setup and verification checklist
- Decide whether the task is isolated testing, live debugging or an existing signed-in workflow.
- Prepare Node.js 20 or newer for Playwright, or install the Chrome DevTools plugin for live inspection.
- Create a dedicated browser profile or test account before connecting any authenticated site.
- Install the selected MCP server and restart Claude Code if its tool list is stale.
- Ask Claude to open a non-sensitive page and report its title and visible headings.
- Test one harmless interaction, such as filling a disposable form field without submitting it.
- For debugging, request console and network evidence before asking for code changes.
- For tests, assert observable outcomes and run the same scenario in a fresh context.
- Remove the server, close the profile or revoke credentials when the work is complete.
Common problems and fixes
Claude Code cannot find the browser tools
Cause: the MCP process was not registered, is still starting, or Claude Code has not refreshed its tool list.

Fix: rerun the installation command, confirm Node.js is available on the shell path, restart Claude Code and check that the server process starts without package-download errors.
Playwright installation fails on an old Node version
Cause: the official setup requires Node.js 20 or newer.

Fix: upgrade Node.js, open a new shell so the version change is active, then rerun claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest.
The agent opens a blank or unexpected context
Cause: you selected Playwright’s isolated context while expecting existing cookies, or the CDP endpoint points to a different Chrome process.
Fix: use the isolated context for a clean test, or explicitly configure a Chrome channel/CDP endpoint and verify the target process, port and tab.
Login disappears between steps
Cause: the browser context was recreated, the login is scoped to another profile, or the site invalidated the session.
Fix: keep the workflow in one context, authenticate with the dedicated test account and confirm the account’s session policy. Do not copy personal cookies into automation.
Claude reports a control is missing
Cause: the control may be inside an iframe, hidden until a prerequisite action, blocked by a consent dialog or represented differently in the accessibility tree.
Fix: ask for an accessibility snapshot and DOM inspection, dismiss the legitimate dialog, wait for the selector or network idle, and identify the frame or role before clicking.

Debugging evidence is incomplete
Cause: a console error may occur before capture, a request may be filtered, or the failure depends on timing.
Fix: reproduce from a fresh reload, collect console messages and failed requests first, then add a performance trace or DOM snapshot. Record the exact URL, viewport and account state.
Performance, reliability and operating cost
Isolated Playwright runs are generally more reproducible but may spend time starting a browser and authenticating test data. Reusing a live session is faster for a one-off investigation, yet it inherits every tab, extension and state-dependent failure in that profile. For dependable CI, keep setup deterministic, wait on meaningful selectors or network conditions instead of arbitrary sleeps, and assert the final page state.
