On a Chromebook, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, choose Screen record, select the full screen, a region or a window, then start recording. That shortcut belongs to ChromeOS, not to the Chrome browser on Windows or macOS. On a non-Chromebook computer, use your operating system’s recorder, a Chrome extension such as Google Vids, or the browser’s developer-facing getDisplayMedia() workflow.
First identify which “Chrome” you are using
Google uses “Chrome” for the browser and “ChromeOS” for the operating system on Chromebooks. The built-in Screen Capture toolbar described below is a ChromeOS feature. Installing Chrome on Windows or macOS does not add the Shift + Ctrl + Show windows shortcut.
| Device or workflow | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| ChromeOS Screen Capture | Local video of the entire display, a selected region or one window; device audio, microphone or both can be selected | Fast recordings saved on the Chromebook |
| ChromeOS Screencast | Recording plus transcript, search, translation, trimming, muting, title overlays and link sharing | Lessons, demonstrations and collaborative review |
| Chrome on Windows or macOS | No universal Chrome recording button; use an operating-system recorder, an extension or a web application built on screen-sharing APIs | Desktop workflows outside ChromeOS |
Record your screen on a Chromebook with Screen Capture
Open the recording toolbar
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key has a rectangle with two vertical lines. If your Chromebook has a dedicated screenshot key, you can use that key or open Screen Capture from the system interface instead.
- When the toolbar appears at the bottom of the display, choose Screen record rather than the still-image screenshot option.
- Open the toolbar’s Settings menu before starting if you need to change audio, camera, click indicators or the save location.
Choose what to record
- Select Full screen to record everything visible on the display.
- Select Partial screen, then drag around the exact area to include.
- Select Window, then click the application window you want to capture.
- Start the capture by clicking the screen for a full-screen recording, completing the region selection for a partial recording, or choosing the target window.
A partial-screen capture can be saved as a video file or as a GIF. GIF output does not include audio or video input, so choose video when narration, system sound or camera footage matters.
Set audio, camera and indicators
Screen Capture’s settings can expose the following choices, depending on the Chromebook and its connected hardware:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.

- Both: device audio and microphone together.
- Front camera: include a camera view when the option is available.
- Show clicks and keys: display interaction indicators for tutorials and demonstrations.
A USB microphone is optional. If you connect one, select it as the microphone source and check that ChromeOS recognizes it before recording; no particular model is required.
Stop and locate the file
- Use the on-screen Stop recording control when you are finished.
- You can also stop with Search + Shift + X.
- Recordings are saved in Downloads by default. In Screen Capture settings, choose another folder if you want recordings on an external drive or in a project directory.
Google’s Chromebook instructions also state that screenshots and recordings are copied to the clipboard, so you may be able to paste the latest capture directly into a compatible app as well as open the saved file.
Use Screencast when a local video is not enough
Screencast is a separate ChromeOS application, not another mode inside the Screen Capture toolbar. Google says it is available on ChromeOS devices with Chrome version 104 or later, although an administrator can disable it for managed users.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
What Screencast adds
- Record the full screen, one window or a partial area.
- Generate a transcript and make the recording searchable.
- Translate the transcript.
- Trim sections, mute audio and add title overlays.
- Store recordings in Google Drive and share a link.
Check sharing before sending a link
For personal accounts, a shared Screencast link can be visible to anyone who has the link. In managed work or school accounts, sharing is limited to users in the managed domain who have the link. Confirm the audience setting before distributing a recording that contains private tabs, customer information or internal documents.

Recording Chrome on Windows or macOS
Chrome for Windows and macOS does not provide the Chromebook Screen Capture shortcut as a browser-wide control. Use the recorder supplied by your operating system, install a Chrome extension, or use a web application that requests screen sharing.
What getDisplayMedia() actually does
Chrome’s developer documentation describes getDisplayMedia() as a screen-sharing API. A page or extension calls it, Chrome asks the person to choose a tab, window or entire screen, and the selected stream can then be recorded. This is an API for developers, not a promise that an ordinary Chrome installation includes a ready-made recording button.

A minimal page-based example is below. It must run from a secure context such as HTTPS (or a local development origin), and the start function should be invoked by a user action such as a button click. The browser still displays its own sharing chooser; a script cannot silently select a screen.
<button id="start">Start recording</button>
<button id="stop" disabled>Stop</button>
<a id="download" hidden>Download recording</a>
<script>
let recorder;
let stream;
const chunks = [];
document.querySelector('#start').onclick = async () => {
stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
video: true,
audio: true
});
recorder = new MediaRecorder(stream);
recorder.ondataavailable = event => {
if (event.data.size) chunks.push(event.data);
};
recorder.onstop = () => {
const blob = new Blob(chunks, { type: recorder.mimeType });
const link = document.querySelector('#download');
link.href = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
link.download = 'chrome-screen-recording.webm';
link.hidden = false;
chunks.length = 0;
};
recorder.start();
document.querySelector('#start').disabled = true;
document.querySelector('#stop').disabled = false;
};
document.querySelector('#stop').onclick = () => {
recorder.stop();
stream.getTracks().forEach(track => track.stop());
document.querySelector('#start').disabled = false;
document.querySelector('#stop').disabled = true;
};
</script>
The exact audio choices shown by Chrome depend on the selected source and platform. If the chooser or operating system denies permission, the page cannot capture anything. For a non-developer, an operating-system recorder or a maintained extension is usually simpler.
Google Vids extension
Google’s Vids help workflow uses a Chrome extension that must be installed before recording. This is distinct from ChromeOS Screen Capture and from the developer API. Follow the extension’s permission prompt and verify the destination and sharing settings before sending the finished video.

Troubleshooting checklist
The Chromebook shortcut does nothing
- Confirm that the device is a Chromebook running ChromeOS, not Windows or macOS with Chrome installed.
- Try the dedicated screenshot key or open Screen Capture through the system interface.
- If the Chromebook is managed, an administrator policy may restrict capture features.
There is no sound
- Open Screen Capture Settings and explicitly choose device audio, microphone or both.
- For a connected microphone, verify that ChromeOS lists it and that the correct input is selected.
- Do not choose GIF output when audio is required; GIF files do not contain audio or video input.
The recording is saved somewhere unexpected
Check the Screen Capture save-folder setting. The default is Downloads, but a previous change can send new files to another folder.
Screencast is missing
- Check the ChromeOS version; Google lists version 104 or later for Screencast availability.
- On a work or school Chromebook, ask the administrator whether Screencast has been disabled.
- Use Screen Capture for a local file when Screencast is unavailable.
The shared Screencast link exposes too much
Review the account’s sharing scope before copying the link. Personal-account links can be visible to anyone with the link, while managed sharing is restricted to eligible users in the organization.
A web recorder cannot start
- Run the page from HTTPS or an approved local development origin.
- Start capture from a direct user action, such as clicking a button.
- Accept Chrome’s screen-selection prompt and make sure the selected tab, window or screen remains available.
- Check that another application or policy is not blocking screen sharing.
Practical recording habits
- Close unrelated tabs and notifications before opening the chooser; the selected window or screen can reveal everything visible within it.
- Use a partial region or single window when the audience does not need the whole desktop.
- Make a short test recording to verify microphone and device audio before a long lesson or demonstration.
- Keep the original local file until the shared version has been checked for correct audio, framing and access permissions.
- For managed environments, treat the administrator’s ChromeOS and Drive policies as part of the recording requirements.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a video screen recorder. It is useful when your goal is a clean, repeatable still image of a web page—for example, a frame for documentation, a visual regression check or a thumbnail—without opening Chrome manually. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. This one-call example captures a page as a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free. If you need clean page images rather than a desktop video, sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I record a Chromebook screen as a GIF?
Yes. In Screen Capture, choose Partial screen and select GIF as the output. GIF files cannot include audio or video input, so use a video recording for narration or camera footage.
Where does Screencast keep its recordings?
Screencast recordings are stored in Google Drive. Sharing visibility depends on whether you use a personal account or a managed work or school account.
Does ScreenshotNeo make a video recording of Chrome?
No. ScreenshotNeo returns website screenshots or PDFs through an API. It is an alternative for automated still captures, not a replacement for Chromebook or desktop video recording.
The Bottom Line
Use ChromeOS Screen Capture for a quick local recording, Screencast for transcripts and managed sharing, and an operating-system recorder, extension or getDisplayMedia()-based tool when Chrome runs on Windows or macOS.
