The quickest way to save one webpage is Internet Archive’s Save Page Now: open https://web.archive.org/save, paste the complete page URL, submit it, wait for processing, and copy the resulting snapshot link. That link is useful for citation and sharing, but it is not a full website backup or a guarantee that every script, video, image, login area, or paywall will replay.
Save a webpage with Save Page Now
- Open https://web.archive.org/save. You can also start at the Wayback Machine and choose its Save Page Now function.
- Paste the page’s complete URL, including
https://and any path or query string. - Submit the form and wait while the Internet Archive fetches the page.
- When the capture finishes, copy the permanent snapshot URL shown by the service. Open it in a private window to confirm that the link is shareable.
- If the interface presents optional choices—such as saving a screenshot, saving outlinks, saving error pages, or adding the result to a personal web archive—select only those your use case needs. Labels and account requirements can change.
The Internet Archive’s Help Center summarizes the process as: “Put a URL into the form, press the button, and we save the page.” Save Page Now is intended for a specific page entered by you, one time. It does not automatically add that URL to future crawls, save multiple pages, follow directories, or archive an entire site.
What the Wayback snapshot contains
Save Page Now attempts to save the submitted page together with its images and CSS. It does not save the page’s outlinks as part of the basic one-page capture. A replay can therefore look different from the live page even when the save succeeds.
Resources that may replay incorrectly
- Images and stylesheets: They can be missing when the archive did not obtain or retain the referenced resource.
- JavaScript applications: Client-side code, API calls, and interactive controls may depend on services that are unavailable during replay.
- Video and other media: Large or externally hosted media may not be captured or playable.
- Paywalls and login areas: A public archive request cannot reliably preserve content that requires your session or payment.
- Dynamic and personalized content: Geolocation, cookies, ads, and live data can produce a different result on another visit.
For an evidentiary record, keep the snapshot URL and, when appropriate, a local copy or screenshot as well. A public archive link is durable evidence of what the archive captured, not proof that every element of the original page remains available.

Why a save can fail or later disappear
Robots and owner exclusions
Some sites prohibit crawling. A site owner can also request exclusion, and the Internet Archive says exclusions may be applied retroactively. That means a URL that once replayed may later become unavailable.
SSL and loading errors
SSL configuration problems, redirects, server errors, timeouts, and pages that require JavaScript or authentication can prevent a useful capture. Try the canonical HTTPS URL, remove a temporary tracking parameter, and make sure the page loads normally in a regular browser before submitting it again.
Consent dialogs and interstitials
Cookie banners, newsletter prompts, chat widgets, bot checks, and other overlays can become part of what is captured. If the page is important, save a screenshot or local PDF in addition to the Wayback link so the visible state is documented.
Get a permanent link and preserve context
Use the timestamped snapshot URL returned after the save rather than linking only to the live page. Record the original URL, capture date, and why the page matters. For legal, academic, or compliance work, keep the downloaded HTML or PDF and a screenshot alongside the public URL; note that a local copy is your own record and does not make the archived page authoritative.

Save from your browser
The Internet Archive documents extensions or add-ons for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS, and Android, as well as a Wikipedia JavaScript bookmarklet. Availability and menu names can change, so install only from the current Internet Archive documentation or your browser’s official store. A browser shortcut still performs a one-page save and does not turn the request into a site crawl.

Troubleshooting checklist
The form rejects the URL
- Use the full canonical URL, including its scheme.
- Open it directly first and remove malformed or temporary parameters.
- Check whether the site redirects repeatedly or requires a login.
The snapshot exists but looks broken
- Inspect the replay for missing image, CSS, or script requests.
- Save a local screenshot or PDF at the same time.
- Try again after the page’s assets are available, while recognizing that a second attempt still cannot defeat owner or robots exclusions.
The page is blocked by a bot check
Do not attempt to bypass a site’s access controls. A screenshot service may report a bot check or failed load without billing; preserve the returned verdict headers and use an authorized, publicly accessible URL instead.

The archive link later stops working
Exclusion requests can be retroactive. Keep your local evidence, capture metadata, and any permitted account archive record rather than relying on one public URL.
Practical decision guide
- Choose Wayback Save Page Now when you need a public, timestamped URL for one page.
- Add a local HTML/PDF and screenshot when exact appearance, media, or evidentiary context matters.
- Use an account feature only when its current interface offers the notification, screenshot, personal-list, or outlink behavior you need.
- Choose institutional archiving for a controlled collection of many pages, not as a substitute for a one-off save.

Is a Wayback URL a legally permanent record?
It is a public timestamped snapshot, but exclusions and missing resources can affect availability. Keep independent records for high-stakes use.
Will saving the homepage save the whole domain?
