Neither platform is universally better. Shopify is usually the easier choice when you want hosting and much of the commerce stack managed in one service. WooCommerce is usually the better fit when you use WordPress, need open-source control, or want to choose your own host, payment providers, and extensions. The right decision depends on your country, payment setup, technical capacity, customization requirements, and full operating cost.
Shopify and WooCommerce use different operating models
Shopify: hosted commerce
Shopify is a hosted commerce platform. Hosting is included with its plans, and Shopify describes core commerce services as built in. You configure the store through Shopify rather than assembling WordPress, hosting, security, and ecommerce components yourself.
This reduces infrastructure decisions and routine maintenance, but it also means working within Shopify’s platform rules, plan structure, app ecosystem, and payment policies.
WooCommerce: an ecommerce plugin for WordPress
WooCommerce is an ecommerce plugin for WordPress, not a complete hosted store by itself. You normally select a hosting provider, install WordPress and WooCommerce, choose a theme and extensions, configure security and backups, and keep the software maintained.
#1 Best Overall
The open-source model gives you more control over the stack, but your business or service providers take on more operational responsibility.
Shopify vs. WooCommerce at a glance
| Decision area | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Hosted commerce platform with hosting bundled into the plan. | WordPress plugin; you select hosting and manage more of the surrounding stack. |
| Initial setup | Generally faster because core hosting and commerce infrastructure are bundled. | Requires WordPress, hosting, configuration, and usually theme or extension decisions. |
| Core software fee | Subscription plan; price varies by country and plan. | Core plugin is free, but a finished store still incurs other costs. |
| Payment costs | Card rates depend on plan. Shopify says additional transaction fees may apply when using an outside provider instead of Shopify Payments. | WooCommerce says it adds no fee for choosing a payment solution; the payment processor’s own rates still apply. |
| Customization | Extensive through built-in features, themes, and apps, within Shopify’s platform. | Broad control through WordPress code, themes, plugins, hosting, and extensions. |
| Technical responsibility | Shopify handles hosting and much of the core platform operation. | You or your providers handle hosting, updates, security, backups, compatibility, and maintenance. |
What each platform really costs
Shopify’s cost structure
A Shopify budget normally includes the subscription, payment-processing charges, and any paid apps or services. Hosting is included, but card rates vary by plan and country. If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify says third-party transaction fees may also apply.
Because Shopify pricing and payment availability are regional, do not use a plan price from another country as your budget. Check the live pricing page for your market, billing interval, currency, and intended payment setup.
WooCommerce’s cost structure
WooCommerce’s free core is not the same as a free finished store. Your budget can include hosting, payment processing, premium extensions, implementation, developer work, security, backups, and ongoing maintenance.

WooCommerce’s pricing page gives these broad estimates:
- Hosting: $25–$350 per month for most stores, with costs scaling according to traffic and performance needs.
- Extensions: $29–$299 per year per extension as a typical range.
Those are WooCommerce’s estimates, not a universal quote or a complete-store total. A small catalog on inexpensive hosting and a high-traffic store with several paid extensions have very different budgets.
Compare scenarios, not “paid versus free”
For a useful comparison, model both platforms using the same assumptions:
- Country, currency, tax environment, and billing interval
- Monthly order count, average order value, and expected transaction volume
- Payment methods and the processor rates available in your country
- Required apps or extensions
- Hosting, implementation, development, backups, security, and maintenance
For WooCommerce, include the value of the time or agency work needed to operate the stack. For Shopify, include app subscriptions and any applicable third-party transaction fees. The platform with the lower subscription price is not necessarily the platform with the lower total cost.

Payments and transaction fees can change the result
Shopify
Shopify Payments availability and card rates vary by country and plan. When Shopify Payments is not suitable or available, using an outside provider can introduce Shopify’s additional transaction fee as well as the provider’s processing charge. Calculate both before choosing a plan.
WooCommerce
WooCommerce states that the platform does not add a fee for selecting a payment solution. That does not make payments free: the processor still charges its own percentage, fixed fee, currency-conversion charge, or other applicable cost.
List the payment methods your customers actually need—such as cards, bank methods, wallets, installments, or cash on delivery—and verify that each is supported in your country. Payment availability can matter more than a small difference in platform subscription cost.
Control, customization, and maintenance
Why WooCommerce appeals to control-focused teams
WooCommerce lets you choose the host, database environment, payment provider, theme, plugins, and code. That can be valuable for unusual catalogs, content-heavy WordPress sites, complex integrations, or teams that need direct access to the application stack.

The trade-off is configuration and maintenance. Plugin conflicts, WordPress updates, security hardening, performance tuning, backups, and recovery procedures remain someone’s responsibility.
WooCommerce CEO Nils-Fredrik Winther-Kaland describes the vendor’s position this way: “WooCommerce offers unmatched control over both costs and capabilities. Unlike rigid SaaS platforms, we can tailor every part of the stack — only paying for the features the business truly needs.” This is a vendor testimonial, not an independent cost study.
Why Shopify appeals to managed-service buyers
Shopify bundles hosting and key commerce services, reducing the number of infrastructure decisions required to launch and operate a store. That is useful for owners who want to spend more time on merchandising, marketing, and customer service than on server and plugin administration.
Managed hosting does not remove every technical task. You still need to select apps carefully, manage theme changes, configure domains and analytics, review permissions, and handle integrations. You also accept Shopify’s platform limits and pricing model in exchange for less infrastructure work.

On its comparison material, Shopify reports a 17% average checkout outperformance and a 36% better average total cost of ownership for Shopify. It also presents figures of 49% higher implementation and setup costs, 32% higher platform and ecommerce-stack costs, and 41% higher operating costs for WooCommerce.
These are Shopify-presented figures. Shopify attributes the checkout result to a study involving a global management consulting company and says the total-cost comparison was commissioned from an independent consulting firm. The public material does not establish enough methodology to generalize those results to every store, country, team, or implementation. Treat them as directional vendor claims, not guarantees or substitutes for your own budget and conversion data.
Which platform fits your situation?
Choose Shopify when
- You want hosting and more of the core commerce stack handled by one provider.
- You need a relatively straightforward launch and have limited technical staff.
- Your required features are available through Shopify’s built-in tools, themes, and apps.
- You accept subscription billing and the platform’s payment and customization rules.
- Shopify Payments and the relevant plan economics work in your country.
Choose WooCommerce when
- Your site already runs on WordPress and ecommerce should share that content system.
- You need control over hosting, code, data, payment providers, or integrations.
- Your catalog or business rules require custom behavior beyond a managed platform’s normal configuration.
- You have in-house expertise or a dependable provider for updates, security, performance, and recovery.
- You have priced hosting, extensions, implementation, and maintenance rather than stopping at the free core.
Pause before choosing either
- Your preferred payment methods are not confirmed for your country.
- You are comparing a WooCommerce subscription-free core with a fully configured Shopify store.
- No one is assigned responsibility for backups, security, updates, and incident recovery.
- Your decision depends on a vendor statistic without checking whether its study matches your store.
A practical decision process
- Define the market: record the country, currency, tax requirements, shipping destinations, and required payment methods.
- Describe the store: estimate products, variants, orders, average order value, traffic, integrations, and content needs.
- List must-have features: separate essential capabilities from conveniences, then identify the Shopify apps or WooCommerce extensions required.
- Assign technical ownership: decide who handles hosting, updates, security, backups, performance, and emergency recovery.
- Build two whole-stack budgets: include subscriptions, processor fees, transaction fees, hosting, extensions, implementation, and maintenance.
- Verify current regional terms: check live Shopify plan and payment details and current WooCommerce hosting and extension estimates before committing.
- Choose the lower-risk fit: prefer the platform whose operating responsibilities and payment economics your team can reliably sustain.
Bottom line
Shopify is the stronger default for merchants who prioritize managed hosting, a unified service, and less infrastructure work. WooCommerce is the stronger default for WordPress users and control-oriented teams willing to select and maintain their own stack. Neither “free core” nor “bundled hosting” tells you the final cost on its own. Make the decision with a country-specific, payment-specific, whole-stack scenario rather than a universal winner claim.
