The direct URL is the address that serves the PDF file or its download endpoint, not a page that embeds a viewer, preview, or attachment details. To find it, use the download or file-URL control provided by the host, make sure the intended audience has permission, and test the result while signed out or in a private window.
The exact procedure depends on where the PDF is stored. Google Drive separates browser-view and binary-download links; Dropbox uses share links that can be converted for download or embedding; WordPress exposes a file URL in the Media Library that is different from an attachment permalink.
Direct PDF URL versus a preview URL
A preview URL resolves to an intermediate HTML page. That page may show a PDF viewer, a sign-in prompt, sharing controls, or an attachment template. A direct URL resolves to the PDF itself or to the host’s download endpoint, so a browser can open the document directly and another application can retrieve the binary file.
- Preview or attachment-page URL: opens a web page containing a viewer or metadata.
- Direct file/download URL: returns the PDF document (or a documented download response) to the browser or requesting program.
- Permission still applies: changing the form of a link never grants access that the owner has not allowed.
- Parameters can matter: do not remove a query string such as Dropbox’s
dl=1when the host’s workflow requires it.
Before sharing a link, decide whether it should be public, available to anyone with the link, or restricted to authenticated users. Then test it using the same access level your recipients will have.

A reliable method for finding and checking the URL
- Locate the original file record. Work from the host’s file list, Media Library, or API rather than copying the address of a viewer tab.
- Choose the host’s download or file-URL command. Look for labels such as Download, Copy link, File URL, or an API field explicitly described as a download link.
- Set access before testing. Configure public or anyone-with-link access, or sign in with the account that should be permitted to download.
- Copy the complete address. Preserve the path, filename, and every query parameter. A parameter can switch a share page into a download response.
- Test without relying on your existing session. Open the link in a private/incognito window, or sign out if the intended audience is unauthenticated.
- Confirm the result. The address should open or download the PDF itself, not another viewer page, an attachment page, or a request-access screen.
If the private-window test fails, fix permissions or use the host’s documented direct-file method. Do not try to make a preview URL “direct” by deleting arbitrary parts of it.
Google Drive: use sharing for people and API fields for downloads
Copy a share link in the Drive interface
- In Google Drive, select the PDF and open Share.
- Under General access, choose the intended audience, such as a restricted list or anyone with the link.
- Apply the role and copy the link.
Drive can open a PDF in a new browser tab, and the same file can be downloaded from Drive. The copied sharing address is primarily a browser-facing link; it may still lead through Drive’s viewer and permission checks.
Use the API’s file fields when an application needs a download URL
Google Drive’s API distinguishes two useful fields:

When your integration needs the file bytes, request the appropriate download field rather than storing a view link. API links can be short-lived or dependent on credentials, so treat them as access-controlled values, not automatically permanent public URLs.

- The owner may have disabled downloads for viewers or commenters. Ask the owner to allow downloading or change the recipient’s role.
- A recipient may see Request access because General access is restricted. Update sharing or add that person explicitly.
- Chrome downloads can fail when third-party cookies are blocked. Check Chrome’s third-party-cookie settings and retry the download.
- A private-window test will fail if the file intentionally requires a Google sign-in. That result reflects the permission model, not necessarily a malformed URL.
Dropbox: convert a share link only for the documented workflow
Create the share link
In Dropbox, select the PDF, choose Share, and create a link. A view-only link can be used by recipients who should not need to log in, provided the sharing settings allow that audience.

Turn the preview address into a download/embed address
For the PDF Embedder direct-download and embedding workflow, a preview address such as:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/.../file.pdf?dl=0
is changed to:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/.../file.pdf?dl=1
This is a workflow-specific conversion documented for that integration. Dropbox has changed link formats over time, so verify the resulting address and re-check the host’s current documentation if a newly generated link does not behave the same way.
Embedding requirements
Use HTTPS for the page that embeds the Dropbox file. The documented workflow relies on Dropbox’s CORS policy, which requires a secure connection. Keep the complete query string, including dl=1; removing it can return a preview response instead of the file.
Permission checks
If a recipient sees an access request, share the file with the required audience or create a link whose visibility matches your use case. Converting the hostname or changing dl=0 to dl=1 does not override Dropbox permissions.

WordPress: copy the Media Library file URL, not the attachment page
Find the URL in the dashboard
- Open the WordPress dashboard and go to Media (the Media Library).
- Select the uploaded PDF.
- Copy the URL shown for the media item.
WordPress.com describes this URL as a unique address built from the site address, media directory, upload date, and filename. That address points to the uploaded file and is normally the value you want for a download link or an HTML link.
Distinguish an attachment permalink
WordPress also has an attachment permalink, which can lead to a page using your theme’s attachment template. The direct attached-file URL is different. In code, WordPress recommends wp_get_attachment_url( $id ) when you need the file URL; get_attachment_link() is for the attachment page instead.

Permissions, authentication, and link lifetime
URL shape and authorization are separate concerns. A syntactically correct direct address can still produce a sign-in page, a request-access message, or an expired response.

| Will it work in an embed? | Check the host’s CORS and HTTPS requirements, especially for Dropbox. |
For a public website, avoid publishing a credential-bearing or short-lived API URL. For private documents, keep the link behind the host’s authentication and share it only with the intended users.

How to verify that a URL really serves the PDF
- Open it in a private/incognito window configured for the intended audience.
- Check that the browser displays the PDF or starts a download, rather than showing a host dashboard or viewer shell.
- Follow the link from a device or account that does not already have access cached.
- For an embed, test from an HTTPS page and confirm that the embedded document loads without a cross-origin error.
- Keep a copy of the exact working URL. Do not manually retype or normalize its query parameters.
A successful test proves the behavior for that permission state at that time. It does not guarantee that an owner will not later revoke access or that an API-generated link will never expire.

Troubleshooting common failures
The link opens a PDF viewer or preview page
You copied an intermediary address. Return to the host’s file controls and choose its download or direct-file option. For Dropbox, use the documented dl=1 conversion only when your embedding or download workflow calls for it. For WordPress, copy the Media Library file URL instead of the attachment permalink.
Recipients see “Request access”
The URL did not change the file’s permissions. In Google Drive, adjust General access or add the recipient. In Dropbox, share the file with the required audience or create an appropriate view-only link.
Drive downloads fail in Chrome
Check whether third-party cookies are blocked. Google documents that this setting can prevent Drive web downloads. After changing the setting, retry in a normal window and then repeat the private-window test.
The WordPress URL shows a themed attachment page
Use the Media Library’s file URL or return wp_get_attachment_url( $id ) from your code. Do not use get_attachment_link() when the requirement is the PDF bytes.

An API link works once and then stops
Some API links are short-lived or require credentials. Generate a fresh link when needed, authenticate the request correctly, or store a stable public file URL if the host provides one and your security policy permits it.
An embed is blocked even though the file opens directly
Opening and embedding have different cross-origin rules. Use HTTPS for the embedding page and follow the host’s documented CORS method. A direct browser download alone does not prove that an iframe or JavaScript fetch is allowed.
