To make each image play its own audio story, use the WordPress.org plugin Audio Story Images. Upload the images and audio files to your Media Library, connect each pair, and add the linked images to a post or page. If you only need an ordinary audio player near an image, WordPress’s built-in Audio block is simpler—but it does not provide the same per-image playback behavior.
Choose the right approach

The distinction is whether audio belongs to each image or simply sits beside the image content. WordPress describes its Audio block as a way to put a music track, podcast, or other sound file into a post or page. Add a separate audio story to each image
The Audio Story Images directory listing documents a Media Library workflow. It says the plugin supports JPEG, PNG, and GIF images, and MP3 and WAV audio files.
- Install the plugin. In your WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for “Audio Story Images,” and install and activate the listing that matches the WordPress.org plugin page. Review its current listing before using it on a live site.
- Upload both kinds of media. Add the image files and their corresponding audio files to Media → Add New Media File. Keep track of which audio belongs with which image, especially when preparing several stories.
- Connect each image and audio file. Open Media → Library and switch to list view. Use the “Audio Story” column to associate the relevant audio with an image. Alternatively, edit an attachment and use the “Audio Story” meta box in the sidebar. The plugin listing says you can make the connection from either the image or audio attachment.
- Place the linked image in your content. Add the image to a post or page. The listing says a play button appears on linked images in posts, allowing visitors to start the associated story.
- Preview the result. Check the published page on desktop and mobile. Confirm that every image has the right audio, that the play control is visible, and that playback works when visitors activate it.
Optional autoplay
The plugin listing describes an option to start playback when an image comes into view. It also describes a first-visit notice related to browser autoplay rules. Browser behavior varies, so treat autoplay as an enhancement rather than the only way to hear a story: leave the visible play control available and check the result on the devices and browsers your audience uses.

Use WordPress’s built-in Audio block instead
For a player that sits alongside an image rather than being attached to it, add the image and an Audio block separately in the block editor.
- Add an image. Insert an Image block, or use a Gallery block if you want to display several images.
- Insert the player. Add an Audio block where you want it in the post or page. Choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL to select the audio source.
- Label it clearly. Add a caption so visitors can tell what the recording contains and how it relates to the image.
- Set playback options. The Audio block offers autoplay, loop, and preload settings. WordPress says Auto preload downloads the entire audio file and may affect page loading; None delays the download until a visitor presses Play. Choose a less eager preload setting when the full file does not need to be downloaded immediately.

Check compatibility, playback, and accessibility
Verify plugin maturity before relying on it
The WordPress.org directory description calls Audio Story Images beta and says, “This plugin was just created.” That wording is from the listing, not an independent assessment of its current code or maintenance. The listing does not establish compatibility with a particular WordPress release, maintenance frequency, or support quality. Check the current plugin page and try it on a staging site before using it for a large or important publication.
Do not make autoplay essential
Browser autoplay policies can block playback or require a visitor interaction. Keep a usable play control and ensure the story remains accessible without automatic playback.

Make the audio and image understandable
- Write meaningful alt text for images when it helps convey their content or purpose.
- Use a caption or nearby text to identify what each recording contains.
- Keep playback controls visible and do not make sound the only way to receive important information.
These are practical content recommendations, not a plugin-specific accessibility audit; the cited documentation does not establish that the plugin has been audited for accessibility.
Check files on the site you will publish
The plugin listing names MP3 and WAV audio and JPEG, PNG, and GIF images, but does not document every codec, hosting setup, maximum file size, or file-and-device combination. Test the actual media on your site rather than assuming every permitted file will behave identically in every environment.

WordPress.com plan availability
For WordPress.com, the support guide last reviewed September 8, 2026, says the Audio block is available on Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce plans; free sites need to upgrade to use it.
