If Windows + Print Screen appears to do nothing, first check whether Windows saved the image somewhere unexpected or captured it to the clipboard instead. Then test a second capture shortcut and check your keyboard’s Fn layer and Print Screen setting. The steps below separate those possibilities for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

First, identify what “not working” means

Windows has more than one screenshot route, and they do not all produce the same result. Windows + PrtScn is the documented shortcut for capturing the full screen and saving an image file. Pressing PrtScn by itself can copy screen contents to the clipboard, which will not necessarily create a file you can find in File Explorer. Windows + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool’s capture overlay, where you can select a region.

That difference matters: a missing file does not prove that no capture happened. Start by deciding which symptom fits:

  • No visible response: test the key combination and the keyboard’s Fn layer.
  • The screen responds, but no file is visible: check the Screenshots folder and OneDrive’s Pictures backup.
  • You can paste an image but cannot find a file: the image may be on the clipboard rather than saved.
  • You get the wrong kind of capture: choose the shortcut that matches whether you need a full-screen file or a selectable region.

Check the standard save location

Press Windows + PrtScn once, then open File Explorer and check Pictures > Screenshots. Windows documents that Windows + PrtScn saves a full-screen capture in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures. The image may be there even if you did not see a prominent notification. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference.

  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select Pictures in the navigation pane.
  3. Open Screenshots and look for the newest image.

If you do not see a Screenshots folder, try the shortcut once more and refresh the folder. If your Pictures folder is being backed up to OneDrive, check the corresponding Pictures folder in OneDrive as well. The precise location depends on your account and backup configuration; Microsoft’s current guidance says the former separate “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available. Instead, screenshot backup depends on whether Pictures is included in OneDrive backup. See Microsoft’s pages on saving screenshots to OneDrive and accessing OneDrive settings.

Test capture separately from saving

Use a built-in alternative to find out whether Windows can capture the screen even if the Windows + PrtScn route is not giving you the result you expect.

Test the clipboard with PrtScn and Paint

  1. Press PrtScn once. On some keyboards, use the Fn layer as described below.
  2. Open Paint or another image-capable app.
  3. Press Ctrl + V.

If an image appears, the capture reached the clipboard. Paste it into the app where you want to use it, then save it from that app if you need a file. Microsoft documents the Print Screen clipboard behavior in Copy the window or screen contents.

Test the Snipping Tool overlay

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. When the overlay appears, choose a capture mode and select an area of the screen.
  3. Check the Snipping Tool window or paste the capture into an image-capable app. Save it from Snipping Tool if you want a file.

Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window, where it can be edited, saved, and shared. If the overlay opens and captures a region, that confirms a built-in capture route works; it does not, by itself, establish why Windows + PrtScn failed to save where expected. See Microsoft’s Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

Check the Print Screen key and Fn layer

Key labels vary: look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. On a compact laptop keyboard, Print Screen may share a key with another function and require holding Fn. Check the device’s keyboard guide for the correct combination; the exact mapping is hardware-dependent.

Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space as an alternative on hardware that does not have a PrtScn button. This is not a universal replacement for every keyboard layout, so use the device maker’s guidance if it does not work. Microsoft’s Australia support article covers this option for Windows 10 and Windows 11: Keyboard shortcut for print screen.

  • Simply Wireless: Forget about drop-outs and delays thanks to a strong, reliable wireless connection with up to 33 ft range (5); K270 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later

If the key is difficult to press as part of a three-key combination, test each key and the Fn layer according to the keyboard’s instructions. An external keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key can be a conditional diagnostic aid: if it works while the built-in key does not, the built-in keyboard mapping may be involved. It is optional; try the free software and key-mapping checks first.

Inspect the Print Screen setting

Windows includes an Accessibility setting that changes what the Print Screen button does: it can be set to open screen snipping. That behavior differs from expecting every Print Screen press to save a full-screen file directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility > Keyboard.
  3. Find the option to use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  4. Check whether its current state matches the behavior you want, and test Print Screen again after changing it if appropriate.

The setting concerns the Print Screen button’s behavior; it does not mean that Windows + PrtScn, clipboard capture, and a Snipping Tool region capture are identical. Microsoft describes the setting in its Windows keyboard shortcuts guidance.

Choose the shortcut that matches the result you need

Shortcut Expected result Useful when
Windows + PrtScn Full-screen capture saved in PicturesScreenshots You want an image file without first pasting into an app
PrtScn, then Ctrl + V Screen contents copied to the clipboard You want to paste the capture into Paint or another app, or test capture separately from file saving
Windows + Shift + S Snipping Tool overlay for a selected screen capture You need a region rather than the whole screen
Fn + Windows + Space Alternative listed by Microsoft for hardware without a PrtScn button Your keyboard lacks a dedicated Print Screen button; the combination is hardware-dependent

These behaviors are documented by Microsoft in its keyboard shortcut reference, clipboard capture guidance, Snipping Tool instructions, and Print Screen guidance for devices without the key.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Windows + PrtScn seems to do nothing

  • Try the key label used by your keyboard and check whether it requires Fn.
  • Use Windows + Shift + S to see whether the Snipping Tool overlay opens.
  • Test PrtScn, then Ctrl + V in Paint to distinguish clipboard capture from automatic file saving.
  • If your device has no PrtScn button, try the hardware-dependent Fn + Windows + Space option listed by Microsoft.

If the built-in keyboard still fails across these capture routes, test an external keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key if one is already available, or consult the device maker’s support for the keyboard mapping. These tests can narrow down whether the issue is tied to the key or its mapping; they do not establish a specific hardware fault on their own.

The image was captured, but there is no file

  • Check Pictures > Screenshots after using Windows + PrtScn.
  • If you used PrtScn alone, paste into Paint or another image-capable app; clipboard capture does not automatically mean a file was created.
  • If Pictures is backed up to OneDrive, inspect the corresponding backed-up Pictures folder and confirm which account and folder configuration you are using.
  • Use Snipping Tool to save a selected capture when you need an immediate file and the shortcut’s save behavior is not meeting that need.

Print Screen opens the snipping overlay instead

Review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and the option to use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. That setting can account for Print Screen opening a capture interface rather than behaving as you expected. If your goal is a saved full-screen file, test Windows + PrtScn and check Pictures > Screenshots.

OneDrive is involved or Settings are restricted

Look at whether Pictures is included in OneDrive backup and which account is signed in. Microsoft’s guidance describes screenshot backup as depending on Pictures backup, not a separate “Save screenshots to OneDrive” toggle. On a work or school device, organization policies may limit which settings or account options you can change; ask the organization administrator if the relevant options are unavailable.

Built-in capture routes still fail

If Windows + Shift + S does not open the overlay, Print Screen does not produce a pasteable image, and the key mapping checks do not help, use device-specific support to investigate the keyboard and Windows configuration. The documented guidance here does not establish a need for third-party driver-updater software, so installing one is not a recommended troubleshooting step.
