Set a filename policy first, then enforce it during upload. A practical rule is lowercase ASCII where possible, single hyphens between words, no punctuation or tracking fragments, and a short description of the image subject. WordPress can normalize new uploads with its built-in sanitization, a filter, or an upload-cleaning plugin. Renaming files already in the Media Library is a separate migration that can affect URLs, thumbnails, caches, and content references.
Define the filename policy before changing WordPress
Use names such as blue-widget-front-view.jpg rather than camera defaults, spaces, mixed case, or strings containing punctuation. Keep the subject meaningful: removing symbols does not create useful accessibility information or descriptive context.
- Use lowercase letters and numbers where practical.
- Separate words with one hyphen.
- Remove accents, punctuation, query-like tracking fragments, and repeated separators.
- Keep the name concise but descriptive of the image subject.
- Decide whether the rule applies only to images or to every uploaded file type.
What WordPress does by itself
During upload, WordPress runs sanitize_file_name(). Its documented behavior is to “Sanitizes a filename, replacing whitespace with dashes.” The routine also removes accents and special characters, collapses consecutive dashes, and trims periods, dashes, and underscores from the beginning and end. The sanitize_file_name_chars and sanitize_file_name filters allow a site-specific policy.

Use the sanitize_file_name filter when you need a consistent rule such as lowercasing. Keep the change limited to upload processing; changing filenames globally can mutate values in contexts that are not new uploads. The September 2026 changelog for Rename Media Files records a fix that limited sanitization to an upload in progress, illustrating this risk.

Duplicate names receive suffixes
WordPress also calls wp_unique_filename(). If a cleaned name already exists, WordPress may append a uniqueness suffix. Treat the policy as a naming format, not a promise that every final URL will exactly match the original slug.
No-code ways to clean new uploads
| Option | Upload scope | Existing media and references | Notable considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean Image Filenames | Converts accented and special characters during upload; can target images only or all file types and supports sideloaded uploads. | Upload-only; its FAQ says it does not clean files already in the Media Library. | WordPress.org listed 30,000+ active installations, version 1.5, and tested up to WordPress 6.9.7 in a 2026 directory capture. These figures are volatile directory metadata, not performance measurements. |
| Rename Media Files: Improve Your SEO | Configurable filename structures, lowercase conversion, and accent removal. | Optional permalink updates and metadata-related settings; verify exactly which references and derivatives are changed. | Its September 2026 changelog includes upload-scoping and security fixes. Check the current release before production activation. |
| File Media Renamer for SEO | Media-library renaming and automatic SEO-format conversion. | Vendor-stated features include updating site references, renaming thumbnail sizes, rename history, and undo. | Test all claimed behavior on staging before a bulk operation. |
Implement upload-time enforcement safely
Using WordPress core filters
- Write the policy and examples in your team documentation.
- Add a narrowly scoped
sanitize_file_namecustomization through a maintained theme or, preferably, a site-specific plugin. - Use
sanitize_file_name_charsonly when you need to alter WordPress’s invalid-character list; do not use it as a substitute for a complete naming policy. - Upload test files containing spaces, accents, punctuation, uppercase letters, repeated dashes, and duplicate names.
- Confirm the resulting attachment filename, generated sizes, and editor output before enabling the rule for all users.
Custom code should be reviewed for multisite, REST, front-end, and programmatic uploads. If you do not maintain PHP code, an upload-cleaning plugin is easier to audit and roll back.

Using a plugin
- Check the plugin’s current compatibility, changelog, security notices, and supported upload paths.
- Choose image-only or all-file-type processing deliberately.
- Install on staging and test normal Media Library uploads, drag-and-drop uploads, REST or application uploads, and sideloaded files if your site uses them.
- Verify collision behavior, generated thumbnails, attachment titles, and links inserted into posts.
- Promote the tested configuration to production and monitor new attachments after release.
Renaming files that already exist
An upload cleaner does not repair files already stored in uploads. An existing-media rename can change the attachment URL, generated derivative paths, cached objects, and references embedded in post content or templates.

Safer migration sequence
- Make a full database and uploads backup, and create a staging copy.
- Inventory the files to be renamed, their attachment IDs, generated sizes, and every known reference.
- Use a renamer that explicitly updates references and derivatives, or write a migration that does both. A basic upload cleaner is not sufficient.
- Run a small batch on staging and test front-end pages, responsive image variants, feeds, sitemaps, REST responses, and downloads.
- Plan redirects or compatibility handling for old attachment URLs where external links may exist.
- After production migration, purge relevant page, object, CDN, and image caches, then crawl for broken URLs.
- Keep the backup and rename history until the site has passed the verification period.
Do not confuse filenames with accessibility or rankings
A clean filename can improve organization and provide useful context, but it is not alt text. Review the image’s alt text, caption, attachment title, and surrounding content separately. Alt text should describe the image’s purpose for someone who cannot see it.
The available plugin descriptions call filenames “SEO-friendly,” but they do not provide an independent statistic isolating filename changes as a cause of higher rankings. Do not promise a ranking lift from filename normalization alone.
Production checklist
- Policy documented with accepted and rejected examples.
- Upload-time normalization enabled through core filters or a maintained plugin.
- Duplicate-name suffixes understood and visible to editors.
- Scope chosen for images only or all uploaded file types.
- Sideload and programmatic-upload paths tested where applicable.
- Existing-media work staged, backed up, reference-aware, and reversible.
- Derivatives, redirects, caches, and post-content links verified after migration.
- Alt text and other accessibility fields reviewed independently.
- Plugin release, compatibility, changelog, and security status rechecked before activation.
The Bottom Line
For most sites, enforce a documented lowercase-and-hyphen policy at upload time, using WordPress’s sanitization filters or a maintained plugin. Treat existing-media renaming as a staged URL migration—not as a simple cleanup—and keep accessibility and SEO claims separate from filename formatting.
