In your dashboard, go to Settings > Discussion, clear Allow people to post comments on new articles, and save. Then use Bulk Edit to set comments to Do not allow on existing posts and pages. Pingbacks and trackbacks have a separate setting, and disabling comments does not delete comments already stored.
1. Turn off comments for new posts
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings > Discussion.
- Clear Allow people to post comments on new articles.
- Save your changes.
This changes the default for new articles; it does not necessarily change existing content. An individual article’s discussion settings can also override the default. See WordPress.org’s Settings > Discussion screen documentation.
2. Close comments on existing posts and pages
Use Bulk Edit to close comments on multiple items. WordPress documents these controls for posts and pages in its FAQ Work with WordPress and Comment moderation guides.
- Open Posts in the dashboard and select the posts to change.
- Choose Edit from Bulk Actions, then click Apply.
- Set Comments to Do not allow, then update the selected posts.
- Repeat from Pages if comments are enabled on pages you want to close.
For one item, open its editor and change the Discussion setting. If the Discussion panel is not visible, check the editor’s display or preferences options.

3. Disable pingbacks and trackbacks separately
Pingbacks and trackbacks are link notifications, not the same control as visitor comments. In Settings > Discussion, clear Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks) and save. Existing posts may still have pingbacks or trackbacks enabled, so use the available bulk-edit controls to close them on older content as well. The WordPress FAQ covers the separate setting and existing-content controls.
4. Decide what to do with comments already posted
Closing comments stops future submissions where the setting applies; it is not the same as deleting previously stored comments. If you want to remove old comments, treat that as a separate cleanup task. Back up the site before using a deletion tool, and check whether removal is reversible. The WordPress plugin directory lists disabling and deleting as distinct uses for tools such as Delete & Disable Comments.

5. When a plugin may be useful
WordPress’s built-in settings and bulk editing cover the basic task. Consider a plugin if you need broader controls—for example, settings across post types, multisite, or API-related behavior. The official directory describes features for Disable Comments and Delete & Disable Comments, but listings and behavior can change. Before installing, check the current listing, compatibility, and configuration against the exact areas you need to control.
Also check what happens to existing comments: a plugin may disable submissions without removing comment records or hiding comments already displayed by your theme. Verify the front end and any relevant admin or API surfaces after configuring it; do not assume a single switch removes every comment or endpoint.

Check the result
- Confirm the new-article default is off in Settings > Discussion.
- Check representative older posts and pages to make sure their comments are closed.
- Review pingbacks and trackbacks separately if you do not want link notifications.
- Open a page that previously showed comments and confirm whether historical comments remain visible; closing comments does not itself delete them.
