To create a client dashboard in WordPress, first decide whether clients need to manage site content or use a private workspace for project information. A frontend dashboard plugin can expose profile and post-management tools; a client portal is the better fit for client-specific files, project status, notes, or messages. Choose the route that matches the work, limit each account to the access it needs, and test the finished setup with client accounts before launch.

Choose between a frontend dashboard and a client portal

“Client dashboard” can describe two different setups. A frontend dashboard lets users work with WordPress content or account details without relying on the standard admin interface. A private client portal organizes information and tools for a client relationship.

Approach Best suited to Questions to answer
Frontend Dashboard Clients who need to manage profiles, posts, or taxonomies from the site frontend. Which roles, custom fields, content types, and upload permissions are needed?
PortalPilot Client-specific files, notes, profiles, permissions, and administrator-side client management, as described in its plugin listing. Does its described feature set fit the workflow and privacy requirements?
Client Power Tools Portal Project status, client-only resources or pages, and communication, as described in its plugin listing. Are project updates and client communication central to the portal?
Client Portal Assigning clients to private portals; its help page describes a dashboard for clients with multiple portals. How will accounts and portal assignments work with the site’s existing users?

These product descriptions are not a controlled comparison of performance, security, or value. Check current compatibility and verify that the plugin supports the exact tasks and access rules you need.

Plan what clients can see and do

List the information each client should see and the actions they should be able to take before installing a plugin. For example, editing posts or profile fields points toward a frontend user dashboard. Sharing project status, private files, notes, or communication points toward a portal designed for client-specific workspaces. Those functions are not interchangeable.

WordPress describes roles and capabilities as the mechanism for controlling user privileges: Roles and Capabilities. Roles group capabilities, while capabilities determine which actions a user can perform. Give each client only the permissions required for the work; do not grant Administrator access as a shortcut. WordPress documentation also advises against removing the Administrator or Super Admin roles.

Set up a frontend dashboard with Frontend Dashboard

The Frontend Dashboard plugin listing documents a simple setup: install and activate the plugin, create a WordPress page containing its shortcode, then select that page as the dashboard in the plugin settings. The listing describes support for custom user roles, custom fields, and frontend post and taxonomy management.

  1. In the WordPress admin area, go to Plugins and choose Add New. Find Frontend Dashboard, install it, and activate it.
  2. Create a page for the dashboard and add the shortcode [fed_dashboard] to its content.
  3. Open Frontend Dashboard’s settings and select the page you created as the dashboard page.
  4. Configure the roles, fields, and content-management options clients require, using the plugin’s current settings and documentation.
  5. Sign in with a test client account and confirm that the page displays the intended tools and no unnecessary administrative controls.

The plugin’s WordPress.org listing documents the shortcode setup and advertised features: Frontend Dashboard. This route is for frontend user and content management; do not assume it creates a private, client-specific project portal by itself.

Set up a private client portal

For client workspaces, choose a portal plugin based on the specific information and interactions needed. The product listings for PortalPilot and Client Power Tools Portal describe different combinations of files, notes, profiles, project status, private pages, resources, and communication. Treat these as vendor-described features, not independent security assessments.

The Client Portal help page says its portals are private by default to logged-in administrators and clients assigned to those portals. That behavior is specific to Client Portal; it should not be assumed for another plugin or custom implementation. Assign each account only to the portal or content intended for that client.

WPMU DEV documents another role-based client-portal approach, but that documentation is an illustration of an approach rather than a comparative plugin evaluation: client portal documentation.

Test access before inviting clients

A login screen or a hidden WordPress admin menu does not, by itself, establish that client records are private. Test the actual pages, files, and actions using separate test accounts. Check both what a client can access and what happens when a client follows a direct URL to content intended for someone else.

  • Confirm that each client can log in, log out, and recover a password.
  • Check that a client can see only the assigned portal, files, and records, including when opening a direct link.
  • Verify that one client cannot view another client’s material.
  • Confirm clients cannot access site settings, unrelated admin screens, or actions beyond their assigned permissions.
  • Review the experience on a phone as well as a desktop browser.

Plugin listings and vendor documentation establish advertised features and product-specific behavior; they do not establish independent security testing. Treat access checks as a required part of your own launch process.
