To make a news website with WordPress, plan your coverage and navigation, install WordPress, create permanent Pages, organize reporting with Categories, choose and test a theme, decide whether the homepage shows latest posts or a curated static page, then publish Posts using a consistent article template. Add plugins only when a specific requirement justifies one.

1. Plan the publication before installing anything

Define the publication’s name, audience, geographic focus, coverage areas and publishing rhythm. Decide which information readers must reach from every page, then sketch a short navigation structure before working on design.

  • Publication identity and audience
  • Core coverage sections
  • About, Contact, privacy and disclosure or corrections information
  • Homepage approach: chronological feed or curated landing page
  • Article conventions, including byline, date, featured image and category label

Planning first prevents a new site from accumulating confusing menus, overlapping categories and templates that do not fit the stories you actually publish.

2. Install and configure WordPress

Install the current WordPress release in the hosting environment you have selected and sign in to the administration area. Exact installation screens depend on the host and its current control panel, so follow that provider’s current instructions rather than assuming every dashboard looks identical.

After signing in, confirm the site name, administrator account, time zone and basic reading and discussion settings. Use a staging or test environment if your host provides one, especially while evaluating themes and templates.

3. Create the permanent Pages readers expect

Use Pages for information that is not part of the time-ordered news stream. Create the durable pages your publication needs before building the menu.

  • About
  • Contact
  • Privacy Policy
  • Disclosure, corrections or editorial policy, where applicable

Pages can be added to site navigation. A story that belongs in the chronological news stream should be a Post, not a Page.

4. Build a small, deliberate category structure

Categories provide editorial sections and archive pages containing the Posts assigned to them. Start with a manageable set that reflects your actual reporting—for example, local news, business, culture or sport only when those are genuine coverage areas.

Use parent and child categories sparingly

WordPress allows nested categories. Create a parent category when an overarching section has meaningful subdivisions; otherwise, a flat structure is easier for readers and editors to understand.

Set category rules before publishing

  • Give each story one primary section that describes its main subject.
  • Use additional categories only when they serve a clear navigation purpose.
  • Do not create sections for topics that have no foreseeable stream of stories.
  • Review archive pages with real headlines before launch.

5. Choose a theme by testing real newsroom content

The theme controls visual presentation and can provide different layouts for the front page, individual Posts and category archives. Begin with the official WordPress Theme Directory, use its filters and preview candidates before activation.

  • A long headline and a short headline
  • A featured image with an appropriate crop
  • A category label, author and publication date
  • A long article body with headings, links and lists

Inspect the homepage, one individual article and at least one category archive. Check readability, mobile behavior, navigation, image handling and whether the metadata your newsroom needs is visible. No particular free or commercial news theme is established as universally best; template availability and editing controls vary by theme.

6. Choose how the homepage works

WordPress displays the latest Posts on the homepage by default. That is often the simplest choice for a chronological news publication. You can instead create a Page for a manually arranged landing page and assign it as the static front page under Settings > Reading, with an optional separate Posts page.

Homepage approach Best fit Trade-off
Latest-posts homepage A publication that wants a current chronological feed with little manual maintenance. Less control over arranging a curated top-story presentation.
Static front page Editors who want a composed landing page and, if needed, a separate index for Posts. Editors must maintain featured content; the exact arrangement depends on the theme and available blocks.

Configure a static homepage

  1. Create the landing Page and add the sections you want readers to see first.
  2. Open Settings > Reading.
  3. Choose the option for a static homepage and select the landing Page.
  4. If desired, select another Page as the Posts page.
  5. Save the setting and inspect the front page and Posts index.

Use the Site Editor with a block theme

With a block theme, open the Site Editor and work with the theme’s Front Page or Home template. A Query Loop and Post Template can display selected fields from Posts, allowing a layout that includes headlines, featured images, authors, dates, categories or tags. The precise controls depend on the theme.

7. Establish a consistent article template

Readers should be able to identify the headline, imagery, author, date, section and article body in the same places from story to story. Use the theme’s single-post template—or edit it in the Site Editor when supported—to establish that pattern.

Recommended post elements

  • Descriptive headline
  • Featured image when it adds value and is properly licensed
  • Author or byline
  • Publication date
  • Primary category
  • Article body with useful subheadings
  • Tags only when they improve discovery rather than duplicate categories

Templates can separately control the front page, blog home, archives and individual Posts. Check each view after changes because improving one template does not guarantee that the others use the same arrangement.

8. Build navigation around reader tasks

Put the main coverage categories and essential Pages in the primary navigation. In a block theme, the Navigation block controls the menu’s structure and design. Keep labels short and recognizable, and make sure a reader can reach the homepage, major sections, About and Contact without searching.

Test the menu at desktop and mobile widths. Open each category link and confirm that its archive contains the expected Posts; an attractive menu that leads to empty or misclassified archives is not ready to publish.

9. Add plugins only for defined needs

Plugins extend WordPress, but a news site does not have a universally required plugin list. First describe the problem in operational terms—such as a particular editorial workflow or another missing capability—then evaluate a plugin’s current WordPress compatibility, maintenance activity, permissions and effect on performance.

  • Install only what the publication can explain and maintain.
  • Read the current plugin documentation and compatibility information.
  • Test updates away from the live site when possible.
  • Remove inactive extensions rather than leaving unnecessary code enabled.

10. Run a prelaunch newsroom check

Before publishing publicly, review the complete reader journey with actual content.

  1. Open the homepage and verify that the intended latest-posts or static-page behavior appears.
  2. Open a category archive and confirm that assigned stories are present.
  3. Open an individual Post and check headline, image, byline, date, category, body and links.
  4. Use the primary navigation to reach every major section and permanent Page.
  5. Read the About, Contact, privacy and disclosure or corrections pages for accuracy.
  6. Check the same views on a small screen and a larger screen.
  7. Publish the first stories into the categories you established, then inspect the live result.

Common setup decisions

Should every news item be a Page?

No. Use Posts for time-dependent reporting and Pages for durable information outside the normal chronology.

Should you create many categories immediately?

No. Begin with a small set of clear sections and add nested categories only when the volume and subject structure justify them.

Is a static homepage always better for a publisher?

No. A latest-posts homepage minimizes maintenance and suits a straightforward feed; a static page offers editorial control but requires ongoing curation.

Is a particular news theme or plugin essential?

No universal choice is established. Compare themes using your own representative stories, and select plugins only to solve documented site needs.
