Add the block to a sidebar template or widget area supported by your theme. If you mean a menu that becomes an icon on smaller screens, use the Navigation block’s Overlay setting instead; that changes the overall navigation presentation, not just one sidebar branch.
Choose the kind of collapsible menu you need
“Collapsible menu” can mean a few different things. Pick the behavior that matches what visitors should be able to open.

The Navigation block’s Overlay choices are Off, Mobile, and Always. Off keeps the menu labels visible; Mobile shows an icon on smaller screens; Always uses the icon-based overlay at all sizes. These choices control the whole navigation presentation rather than making a persistent sidebar into a vertical accordion.
Create a sidebar menu with expandable submenu links
This is the native WordPress route when each menu item should take visitors to a page or URL.

- Open the theme’s editing area. In the Site Editor or the page/template editor available for your theme, add a Navigation block or select the existing one. A new Navigation block may start with a Page List; it can also use an existing or newly created menu.
- Arrange the parent links. Use List View to reorder menu entries. Select a parent item and choose Add submenu in its toolbar.
- Add the child links. Choose a page or enter a URL for a direct child link. You can add further nested submenus if the hierarchy needs another level.
- Set how visitors open the submenu. Select the Navigation block, open its Settings, and under Display choose Click for an explicit expand/collapse interaction. Choose Hover only if opening a branch on pointer hover is the intended behavior.
- Make parent items recognizable. Enable the arrow indicator so visitors can distinguish items with children from ordinary links.
- Choose responsive behavior separately. Under Overlay, select Mobile if the menu should become an icon-based overlay on smaller screens. Use Always only if that presentation should apply at every viewport size.
- Save and preview. Save the template or page, then check the menu at the intended sidebar width and on a narrow screen.
The Submenu block is a child of the Navigation block. WordPress documents its use with block themes and themes that support template editing. A sidebar location is not exposed in every theme: if yours has no sidebar template or widget area, the placement route depends on that theme’s capabilities.
Use an Accordion block for expandable content, not link navigation
If each row should reveal a panel of content rather than a list of destination links, insert an Accordion block and add Accordion Item blocks. Give each item a short heading and put its content in the panel. The block’s settings include auto-close behavior, an icon toggle and position, and an option to have an item open initially. Choose heading levels that fit the page’s outline.

WordPress says, “The Accordion block follows accessible patterns so headings act as buttons and panels announce their expanded/collapsed state to assistive technologies.” Keep headings meaningful and concise. Put links and buttons in the panel rather than inside the heading. The developer reference describes a heading containing a button and a panel marked with role="region"; use the block’s native structure rather than trying to reproduce the interaction with decorative text and CSS alone.
When a sidebar-menu plugin may help
If the native Navigation block and your theme do not provide the vertical accordion behavior or sidebar placement you need, a dedicated plugin is an alternative. The WordPress.org listing for Vertical Menu Block for Sidebar Accordion Menu by WPBean describes a Gutenberg block for vertical accordion menus in sidebars, navigation panels, and widget areas. Its listed features include choosing an existing menu, controlling menu depth, automatically expanding the current item, and keeping expanded state.

The listing says to search the plugin repository for “Vertical Sidebar Menu Block,” install the plugin, and activate it; it also links to a Pro upgrade. Those are publisher-described features, not independent confirmation of performance, accessibility, or compatibility with every theme, device, or assistive technology. Check the current listing and test the block on your site before depending on a particular option.

Documentation describes block behavior and intended accessibility patterns, but the published result also depends on the theme and implementation. Test the actual menu rather than assuming the editor preview covers every interaction.

- Use the keyboard to move through the menu and operate each submenu. Confirm that focus remains visible.
- Check that click-operated branches visibly communicate whether they are expanded or collapsed.
- Try the menu at the sidebar’s real width and at a narrow viewport. Confirm that labels, arrows, and submenu links remain usable.
- Use a screen reader to check that controls and expanded/collapsed state are announced as expected.
- Open a page several levels deep and check whether its parent branch is visible. Automatic expansion is a feature claimed by the plugin listing, not a guaranteed behavior of every native menu or theme.
WordPress’s Navigation block documentation was updated on September 27, 2026; its Accordion block documentation was updated on September 6, 2026, and the Accordion developer reference on September 23, 2026. The Learn WordPress tutorial for creating a second menu location is based on WordPress 6.4 and the 2024 theme, so use it for the general idea of a second location rather than relying on it for current control labels.
