Yes—but the result depends on what you mean by “higher resolution.” You can resample a PNG to add pixels, or change its print-size settings without adding any pixels. Resampling makes a larger file by estimating new pixel values; it cannot restore detail missing from the original. AI upscaling may create a more convincing enlargement, but its added detail is an estimate, not proof of what the original contained.
First decide what “higher resolution” needs to mean
People use “resolution” to describe two different things: an image’s pixel dimensions and the density at which those pixels are printed. The right fix depends on whether you need more pixels for a screen, a design, or a print—or simply need the existing pixels spread across a smaller physical print.
- Pixel dimensions are the image’s width and height in pixels, such as 1200 × 800. Resampling changes these dimensions by adding or removing pixel samples.
- Print resolution or pixel density describes how the available pixels relate to a physical print size. Changing print dimensions or resolution metadata without resampling changes the intended print size, not the amount of image data. GIMP documents this distinction in its Scale Image and Print Size documentation.
Before editing, check the width and height of the PNG and identify the target requirement. If a website or upload form asks for a particular pixel width and height, you need to resize the image. If a print needs to be a particular physical size, check the required pixel density and print dimensions instead.

Use a conventional image editor
- Save an untouched copy. Work on a duplicate so you can compare the enlargement with the source and start over if the result is poor.
- Check the starting dimensions. Open the PNG in an editor and inspect its pixel width and height. Compare them with the required output dimensions before changing anything.
- Open the image-scaling command. In GIMP 3.2, the documented route is Image → Scale Image. This command changes pixel count. Do not confuse it with Image → Print Size, which adjusts print dimensions and resolution without resampling.
- Enter the target dimensions. Keep the aspect ratio linked unless you intentionally want to stretch or squash the image. With the ratio linked, changing one dimension adjusts the other proportionally. If the required width and height have a different ratio, you must choose between cropping, leaving space around the image, or distorting it.
- Choose an interpolation method and scale. Interpolation estimates color values for the new pixels. It can create a larger raster image, but it does not recover original detail. Larger enlargements can look blurrier, so avoid enlarging beyond what the intended use requires.
- Export a new PNG and inspect it. Confirm the exported pixel dimensions, then check the result at the size at which it will actually be used. Compare fine edges, text, faces, and repeated patterns with the original.
GIMP’s 3.2 documentation puts the key limitation plainly: “If you enlarge an image beyond its original size, GIMP calculates the missing pixels by interpolation, but it does not add any new detail.” A larger pixel count is therefore not the same as a more detailed source image.

Decide whether the enlargement is acceptable
Look at the image at its intended display or print size, not only at extreme zoom. If the result looks soft, pixelated, or visibly distorted at the size that matters, try a smaller enlargement or locate a higher-resolution original. There is no universally safe maximum enlargement factor: the visible result depends on the image and the required use.
For a logo, diagram, or artwork that originated in a vector format, exporting a new raster image from the vector source may be preferable to enlarging a PNG. If the original is a photograph or other raster image, the best starting point remains a higher-resolution original when one is available.

When AI upscaling may help
AI upscaling is an alternative when conventional resizing looks too soft. It uses a model to enhance or estimate image content as it enlarges. That can produce a more convincing-looking result, but generated features may be altered or invented. Treat the output as an enhancement, not a recovery of verified source detail.

If accuracy matters, compare the result with the source and do not rely on an upscaled feature as evidence of what was originally present.

Documented options and their limits
- Adobe Photoshop Generative Upscale: Adobe’s Photoshop Help page, last updated May 20, 2026, describes 2× and 4× output choices. It lists Firefly Upscaler up to 6144 × 6144 pixels, Topaz Gigapixel up to 56 megapixels, and Topaz Bloom up to 9 megapixels; the Topaz models are described as requiring a premium subscription. Models, availability, and limits can change, so check Adobe’s current product information before relying on a specific choice.
- Microsoft Photos Super Resolution: Microsoft describes this as a non-generative feature that processes images locally and is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. Its documented enhancement choices are 1×, 2×, 4×, or 8×. Eligibility and controls may change. Microsoft’s example of an image changing from 256 × 256 to 1012 × 1012 pixels is an illustration, not a recommended scale ratio.
- Adobe Camera Raw Super Resolution: Adobe documents an Enhance workflow that creates a larger DNG file. This is a Camera Raw workflow, so it is not a direct PNG-to-larger-PNG output path; account for the output format if your task specifically requires a PNG.
These are documented vendor capabilities, not a comparative quality test. A listed scale choice or maximum size does not guarantee that a particular image will look better.
Changing PNG DPI or print size is not the same as adding pixels
If your goal is a particular physical print size, changing the print resolution or dimensions may be all you need. GIMP’s Print Size command adjusts the relationship between the existing pixels and the print dimensions without resampling. Raising a DPI or PPI value alone does not add pixels or restore detail.

- Amazing image clarity and detail — 4800 dpi optical resolution (1), ideal for photo enlargements
- Epson ScanSmart software included (4) — easily scan photos, artwork, illustrations, books, documents and more
- One-touch scanning (2) — scan in fewer steps with easy-to-use buttons (2)
- Restore color to faded photos — with one click, Easy Photo Fix technology makes it simple

For example, if a print workflow rejects an image because its pixel dimensions are too small, changing a density field alone will not solve that pixel-count problem. You would need to resample to add pixels, use an upscaler, or obtain a higher-resolution source. Conversely, if the pixel count is adequate but the print size is wrong, changing print settings may be the appropriate operation.

Quick Recap
Common problems and how to fix them
- The PNG has more pixels but looks blurry. Resampling estimates added pixels; it cannot recreate missing detail. Try a less aggressive enlargement, compare an AI-upscaled copy carefully, or find a higher-resolution original.
- The image looks stretched. The aspect ratio was changed. Undo the resize and keep the ratio linked, or use cropping or empty space to fit the required dimensions without distortion.
- The upload still says the resolution is too low. Check the exported pixel width and height, not just the DPI/PPI metadata. Make sure the image was resampled to the required dimensions and that you uploaded the enlarged export.
- The print size changed but the pixel dimensions did not. You adjusted print settings rather than resampling. Use the image-scaling command if the job specifically needs more pixels.
- Upscaled text, faces, or patterns look wrong. The model may have estimated details incorrectly. Compare with the source, use a less aggressive setting, or avoid the generated result where fidelity matters.
- The required output is PNG, but the enhancement produced another format. Check the workflow’s output format before editing. Adobe Camera Raw Super Resolution creates a larger DNG; export or convert only if that fits the task’s requirements.
Choose the method by the result you need
| Method | Changes pixel dimensions? | What it does | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change print size or resolution metadata | No | Changes the relationship between existing pixels and physical print dimensions. | Does not add pixels or detail. |
| Conventional resampling | Yes | Estimates new pixel values through interpolation. | Can look soft; does not recover original detail. |
| AI upscaling | Yes | Enlarges and estimates or enhances image content with a model. | May alter or invent details; inspect important features. |
| Use a higher-resolution original or re-export vector artwork | Creates a new raster output at the source’s available detail or chosen export dimensions | Starts from a better source rather than enlarging a small raster image. | Only works if that source is available. |
