You can capture a webpage without installing a screenshot program by using a tool built into your browser. In Firefox, right-click the page and choose Take Screenshot; in Microsoft Edge, use Screenshot or Web Capture. Both browsers offer ways to capture a selected area or a full page, and let you save or copy the result. The exact controls can vary by browser version and device.
Choose the kind of screenshot you need
Before capturing, decide what the image should include. A visible-area screenshot shows only what is on screen now. A full-page screenshot extends below the fold, while a selected-area capture includes only the portion you choose. These are different outputs: if you need the whole article or page, choose the full-page option rather than capturing the visible screen and scrolling manually.
- Visible area: useful for showing the current screen, such as a dialog or a particular section.
- Selected region: useful when you want a specific part of a page without surrounding content.
- Full page: useful for capturing content that continues below the visible screen.
- One element: useful for isolating a specific page component; Firefox Developer Tools offers this as an advanced option.
How to capture a webpage in Firefox
Firefox includes a screenshot command, so you do not need to add an extension. Mozilla documents the following workflow in its Firefox screenshot instructions.
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose a capture option: drag to select a region, choose a page part highlighted automatically, select Save full page, or select Save visible.
- Choose Download to save a PNG file, or Copy to put the screenshot on your clipboard.
Use Save full page when the screenshot must include content below the fold. The automatic page-part selection can help when you want a particular detected section, but check the selection before saving to make sure it covers the intended content.

How to capture a webpage in Microsoft Edge
Edge’s built-in capture feature is labelled Screenshot or Web Capture in the browser’s controls. Microsoft describes full-page and selected-area capture, with options to review, mark up, copy, or save the result. Its Screenshot Tool page notes that behavior and availability can vary by device, market, and browser version.
- Open the webpage in Edge.
- Open Screenshot or Web Capture from the browser menu. You can also try Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose a full-page capture or a selected area.
- Review the result, then use the available controls to copy it, mark it up, or save it.
Microsoft says the feature can capture content below the visible screen. Its feature page also describes capturing moving content such as GIFs or carousels; what you get can depend on the page and the browser version. The Edge Learning Center walkthrough, dated January 2, 2024, provides another step-by-step example and includes an availability caveat for its US-market context.
Can you screenshot just part of a webpage?
Yes. Firefox and Edge both document selected-area capture. Choose the region option, then select the part of the page you want in the resulting image. This is usually the simplest way to leave out nearby content without editing the screenshot afterward.

For a single specific page element rather than a hand-drawn region, Firefox Developer Tools provides a more technical route. The Firefox Developer Tools screenshot documentation describes capturing an entire page or an element. To show the screenshot button, open Developer Tools settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons. The Web Console also has a :screenshot helper with options including --fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr, and --filename. This is useful when you need to target a selector or control capture parameters; for an ordinary screenshot, start with Firefox’s regular command instead.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots through an API or from an AI agent, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a screenshot of stripe.com as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Capture scope | Effort | Output handling | Availability notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox screenshot command | Visible page, selected region, highlighted page part, or full page | Ordinary browser command or shortcut | Download PNG or copy | Documented by Mozilla; labels and behavior may vary by version |
| Edge Screenshot / Web Capture | Selected area or whole page | Browser menu or shortcut | Review, mark up, copy, or save | Microsoft notes variation by device, market, and browser version |
| Firefox Developer Tools | Full page or a selected element; advanced controls include delay and device-pixel ratio | Requires opening Developer Tools and using its settings or console | Can specify a filename through the console helper | Firefox Developer Tools documentation |
For a one-off screenshot, use the built-in command in the browser you already have. Use Developer Tools when you need an element-specific or more controlled capture. The browser instructions cited here establish Firefox and Edge workflows; they do not establish a current official Chrome consumer workflow for full-page capture, so check Chrome’s current interface rather than assuming Firefox or Edge steps apply.

Getting a clean, usable capture
- Check the capture boundaries: confirm whether the tool selected the visible area, a region, or the full page before saving.
- Allow page content to appear: if an image or section has not loaded yet, wait and capture again. Dynamic pages may change while a capture is being made.
- Review moving content: carousels, GIFs, or other changing elements may not appear as expected in a still image. Edge describes support for moving content, but results can depend on the page and browser version.
- Pick an output path deliberately: download when you need a file; use Copy when you want to paste directly into another application.
- Use a region selection for privacy or focus: crop out unrelated page content by selecting only what is needed.
Troubleshooting common problems
The screenshot command or shortcut does not open
Use the browser’s menu to look for Take Screenshot in Firefox or Screenshot/Web Capture in Edge. Shortcuts and labels are not universal, and availability can depend on browser version, device, or market. Ensure the browser window is active before trying a shortcut.
The capture stops at the visible screen
Choose Save full page in Firefox or the full-page option in Edge. A visible-area capture is not the same as a full-page capture, so scrolling before taking a normal visible screenshot will not combine the page into one image.
The selected part is wrong
Cancel or repeat the capture and select the region more carefully. In Firefox, page parts may be highlighted automatically; inspect the highlight before choosing to save. For a page element identified by a CSS selector, use Firefox Developer Tools’ :screenshot --selector option rather than relying on a manual rectangle.

The image is not in the place you expected
In Firefox, choose Download for a file or Copy for the clipboard. In Edge, review the result and choose the save or copy action. If you copied it, paste into the destination application; a clipboard capture is not the same as a downloaded image file.
A full-page capture looks incomplete or inconsistent
Wait for the page to finish loading, then try again. Webpages can load content as you scroll or change while you capture them. If the target is one stable component, Firefox Developer Tools’ selector-based capture may give you a more focused result. The cited browser documentation does not promise identical behavior on every website.

Mozilla says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction data, such as whether someone uses Copy or Save full page, but not the URL or details of the captured image. That statement applies to Firefox Screenshots as described by Mozilla; it is not a general privacy guarantee for every screenshot tool, website, or browser workflow. A screenshot can itself contain private information visible on the page, so review it before sharing.

Capturing through a browser built-in avoids installing a separate screenshot program or extension. It does not mean that the website’s own content, scripts, or behavior are private, nor does it establish the data practices of any third-party online capture service.
Cost, reliability, and practical trade-offs
The Firefox and Edge procedures above use features already built into those browsers, so the how-to does not require buying a separate screenshot program. Their convenience comes with browser-specific controls: exact labels, shortcuts, and availability can vary, and a capture may need repeating if page content has not finished loading.

A service such as ScreenshotNeo serves a different use case: making captures by request, using an API, or letting an MCP-compatible AI agent request them. Its billing behavior is explicit in the response headers, and its plans range from a free allowance to paid tiers; consult its documentation for request details. Do not treat a browser’s built-in screenshot workflow and an API as interchangeable: choose based on whether you need a manual image or repeatable, programmatic captures.
