Use WordPress’s Latest Comments block to show recent comments in a sidebar or similar layout area. On a classic theme, add it through Appearance > Widgets. On a block theme, open the Site Editor and insert it into the sidebar template or template part; block themes do not provide the traditional Widgets screen.
Choose the editing route for your theme
| Theme type | Where you edit | Recommended feature |
|---|---|---|
| Classic theme with widget areas | Appearance > Widgets | Latest Comments block, or the classic Recent Comments widget where it is available |
| Block theme | Appearance > Editor (Site Editor), then the relevant template or template part | Latest Comments block |
The exact controls can vary by theme because themes define their own sidebar areas and block-theme layouts.

Block-theme instructions
- Go to Appearance > Editor to open the Site Editor.
- Open the template or template part that controls the sidebar-like area. Depending on the theme, this may be a sidebar template part, a page template, or another shared layout.
- Place the cursor where the comments list should appear and click +.
- Search for Latest Comments and insert it.
- Save the template or template part.
WordPress supports the Latest Comments block in templates, template parts, pages, and widget areas, so a block theme may not label the destination “Sidebar” even when it occupies that position on the site.

Configure what visitors see
Select the Latest Comments block and use its block settings to control the presentation. Available options include:
- Number of comments: adjust how many recent comments are listed.
- Avatars: show or hide commenter profile images.
- Comment dates: show or hide the date associated with each comment.
- Excerpts: show or hide a portion of each comment.
After saving, view a page that uses the edited layout to confirm that the list fits the sidebar width and that the chosen details are readable on mobile screens.

Use the classic Recent Comments widget when it is available
Some classic themes and older widget interfaces still offer a built-in Recent Comments widget. It lists approved comments and provides settings for a widget title and display count. WordPress documentation describes a maximum of 15 comments for this widget.
- Open Appearance > Widgets.
- Choose the sidebar or desired widget area.
- Add Recent Comments if it appears in the available widgets.
- Enter an optional title and set the number of comments, up to the documented limit of 15.
- Save the widget.
For a current block-based workflow, prefer Latest Comments, which offers additional controls such as avatars, dates, and excerpts.

Why “Recent Comments” may be missing
You are using a block theme
Block themes intentionally remove the traditional Appearance > Widgets screen because their layouts are edited in the Site Editor. Open Appearance > Editor and modify the template or template part that contains the sidebar layout.
Your classic theme has no sidebar widget area
Widget areas are defined by the active theme. If no sidebar appears under Appearance > Widgets, the theme may use a different name, provide only footer areas, or require layout editing elsewhere.
Rank #4
You added the wrong block
The Comments block is not the recent-comments list. It is the post-comments area, including the comments display and form associated with post content. Use Latest Comments to surface recent site activity in a sidebar-like area.

Troubleshoot the displayed list
- No comments appear: check that the site has approved comments. Pending or spam comments are not presented as approved recent comments.
- The list is in the wrong place: edit the sidebar widget area in a classic theme, or the correct shared template part in a block theme.
- The appearance differs from the editor: the theme’s styles control typography, spacing, colors, and responsive behavior around the block.
- The sidebar option is unavailable: confirm the active theme type and look for a theme-defined widget area or a Site Editor template part instead of assuming every installation uses the same menu.
