To create a custom author profile in WordPress, customize the author archive rather than assuming you need an ordinary static page. The archive gathers posts associated with an author; its layout comes from a theme template. Use Appearance > Editor to create or edit an Author Archives template in a block theme. In a classic theme, customize author.php or a more specific author template. Add the author’s profile biography separately under Users > Profile, then check the archive on the front end.
Author archive or static page: which should you customize?
A WordPress author archive is the page that lists content associated with a particular author. WordPress chooses its layout through the theme’s template hierarchy: a more specific author template takes precedence over broader author, archive, and index fallbacks. See the WordPress template hierarchy documentation.
A static Page can display an author’s biography, but it does not automatically serve as that author’s post archive. If visitors should be able to see both a profile and the author’s posts together, customize the archive template. Template availability and labels can vary with the active theme and WordPress version.

| Decision | Block theme | Classic theme |
|---|---|---|
| Main workflow | Create or edit an Author Archives template in the Site Editor. | Customize an author-specific PHP template or author.php. |
| Best fit | Site owners who want to arrange the layout with blocks. | Site owners or developers comfortable working with theme files. |
| Scope | The editor can offer a template for all authors or a particular author. | A general author layout or a more specific template for one author. |
| Maintenance | Saved editor customizations take precedence over the theme’s bundled template. | Keeping custom code separate from parent theme files avoids losing it in a theme update. |
For the block-theme behavior and template targeting, see WordPress’s Template Editor documentation. For classic themes, the Theme Handbook’s post template files guide describes author templates and the kinds of author content they can contain.

Customize an author archive in a block theme
- Open the Site Editor. In the dashboard, go to Appearance > Editor, then open Templates. The exact labels may differ by WordPress version or theme.
- Add or edit Author Archives. Choose whether the template should apply to authors generally or to one specific author, if that choice is offered.
- Build the profile and post listing. Arrange blocks so the author’s identity and biography are visible, followed by the archive listing or loop of that author’s posts. A biography by itself will not meet the expectation of visitors looking for the author’s articles.
- Save and preview the archive. Check the result on the front end, and view another author’s archive if the template is intended for everyone.
Changes saved in the Template Editor take precedence over the version bundled with the theme. That lets you customize the archive without editing its bundled template file, but means the saved editor version governs the display.
Customize an author archive in a classic theme
- Confirm the active theme is classic. The appropriate route depends on the theme in use; block-theme Site Editor instructions do not apply identically to every theme.
- Choose the template scope. Customize
author.phpfor a general author layout, or use a more specific author-nicename or author-ID template when one writer needs a distinct design. WordPress checks more specific templates before broader fallbacks. - Implement the content and post loop. The template can combine author information—such as an image, social details, and biography—with the posts by that author. The exact fields and presentation depend on the theme and implementation.
- Protect the change and test it. As a maintenance practice, keep site-specific changes in a child theme rather than an update-prone parent theme. Test template changes in a staging or local environment before applying them to a production site.
Do not paste PHP into a live theme without reviewing it for the site’s setup. If you are not comfortable modifying theme files, ask a developer to implement and test the template.

Set the author’s biography and profile details
Have the author enter their biography under Users > Profile. WordPress’s Post Author Biography block displays the biography from that profile when inserted into a page or post, and can also be used in a block-theme archive template where available.
The biography block is a dynamic, server-rendered block named core/post-author-biography. Its documented styling supports include color, typography, spacing, and text alignment; see the Author Biography block reference.
That block displays the profile biography; it is not, by itself, a complete custom author card or a universal source for extra fields. A specialty, social links, or custom image may require theme-specific controls or another implementation. Check what your theme and site setup actually expose before designing around those details.

Check the finished page
- Open the author archive as a visitor would and confirm the intended author’s name and biography appear.
- Confirm the post listing contains that author’s posts, not just a static biography.
- If the design should work for every writer, inspect another author’s archive too.
- Review an individual post and any author-specific variation your site needs, so the archive change has not been mistaken for a change to the post layout.
