Verdict: Dashlane is a capable password and credential manager for individuals and households that want unlimited password storage, passkeys, autofill, secure sharing, and security alerts across devices. Premium is designed for one person; Friends & Family covers up to 10 members. The family manager receives VPN access, but invited members do not. Dashlane’s security architecture is documented by Dashlane itself, not independently compared with competing services, so treat those statements as vendor claims rather than proof of superior security.
What does Dashlane do?
Dashlane stores and autofills passwords, passkeys, payment details, and other personal information. Its personal plans also provide password generation, secure sharing, Password Health, two-factor authentication, breach and dark-web notifications, scam alerts, and phishing alerts. You can use Dashlane on the web, Android, iPhone, and macOS, although the feature set is not identical in every app.
Dashlane’s Premium documentation lists three ways to unlock or sign in: a Master Password, a PIN, or a physical security key. The documentation does not identify specific compatible retail keys, so do not assume that every FIDO2 security key will work.

Choose Premium if you are the only user
Premium fits one person who wants Dashlane’s full personal feature set, including VPN access for that account, without paying for additional members.

Choose Friends & Family for a household
Friends & Family is the practical option when several people need separate accounts under one subscription. Its important limitation is VPN scope: only the manager receives VPN access. If every household member needs a VPN, this plan’s stated benefits do not meet that requirement.
Passkeys: useful, but dependent on the site and device
What are passkeys? They are sign-in credentials that use public-key cryptography and are typically unlocked with a device screen lock or biometric check instead of a traditional password. Dashlane says its web and mobile apps can create, store, use, and delete passkeys when the destination website or app supports passkey login.
That support is not universal. A website or app may not offer passkeys, and behavior can vary by browser and device. Before moving an important account to a passkey, confirm that the service supports passkey sign-in on the exact platform you use and that you have a recovery method.
Platform coverage and feature differences
Dashlane covers web, Android, iPhone, and macOS, but its feature matrix shows that capabilities differ between apps. For personal plans, signing in to Dashlane with a security key is listed for the web app. Autofill behavior and password-history features also vary by platform.
Rank #4
- Check the feature matrix for your specific operating system and browser before relying on a feature.
- Test autofill on the sites you use most, particularly on mobile, where browser and app integration can differ.
- If a physical security key is central to your workflow, verify that the web-app limitation meets your needs.
How Dashlane describes its security
Dashlane says its Secure Cloud combines zero-knowledge architecture with confidential computing, and that stored data is encrypted and decrypted on the user’s device. Those are Dashlane’s own descriptions of its design. The available official material does not provide an independent comparative audit result or a security benchmark showing that Dashlane is safer than a particular competitor.
Recommended Free Tools
In practical terms, your account security still depends on choices such as a strong sign-in method, two-factor authentication, keeping recovery options available, and securing the devices that can unlock Dashlane. Dashlane’s alerts and Password Health tools can help identify exposed or reused credentials, but an alerting feature is not a guarantee that every breach or phishing attempt will be detected.
Best Value
Who should use Dashlane?
Good fit
- An individual who wants unlimited storage and access on all devices.
- A household that wants up to 10 Dashlane accounts under one subscription and accepts VPN access for the manager only.
- Users who want passkey support alongside traditional passwords, subject to website and platform compatibility.
- People who value built-in sharing, password-health checks, and breach, dark-web, scam, and phishing alerts.
Look elsewhere or verify first if
- Every family member must receive VPN access.
- You require identical features across web, Android, iPhone, and macOS.
- You need a free tier or monthly billing; Dashlane’s current comparison says Free and several legacy plans are no longer sold and does not list monthly subscriptions for the compared plans.
- You require independently published comparative security testing rather than the provider’s own architecture statements.
Getting started without surprises
- Confirm the plan and region: Check the live Dashlane pricing page for your country, currency, billing period, and any promotion.
- Count the users: Select Premium for one member or Friends & Family for up to 10, remembering that invited family members do not receive VPN access.
- Check platform requirements: Review Dashlane’s feature matrix for your browser, operating system, and any security-key or autofill feature you need.
- Import and audit: Import existing credentials, review Password Health, replace reused passwords, and enable two-factor authentication.
- Test passkeys selectively: Use them only on services that support them on your particular browser and device, and retain account recovery options.
Bottom line
Dashlane’s current personal offering is straightforward: Premium serves one person, while Friends & Family extends the same broad password-management feature set to up to 10 members. The deciding caveats are the manager-only VPN on the family plan, uneven feature availability across apps, and passkey support that depends on each website, browser, and device. Its zero-knowledge and confidential-computing explanations come from Dashlane; they should not be read as an independently verified ranking against other password managers.
