The simplest way to add a notepad to your WordPress dashboard is to install and activate a notes plugin, then configure it using that plugin’s own settings. The exact steps depend on the plugin: one option called Dashboard Notes uses the Classic Widgets screen, while other plugins offer a basic dashboard notepad or contextual notes on admin pages. Developers can also create a custom dashboard widget with WordPress’s Dashboard Widgets API.
Choose a notes plugin that fits how you’ll use it
WordPress.org lists several plugins for adding notes in the admin area, including WP Dashboard Notes, Dashboard Notepad, Dashboard Notes, and KeepInMind Dashboard Notes. Their listings describe different approaches, so decide where the note should appear and who needs to see or edit it before installing one.
- Dashboard widget: A note displayed on the dashboard itself.
- Contextual notes: Notes associated with particular admin pages or elements, as described by KeepInMind Dashboard Notes.
- Access: Check whether the plugin offers the role, user, or sharing controls your team needs.
- Compatibility and maintenance: Review the plugin’s current WordPress and PHP requirements, changelog, support information, and data behavior before relying on it for instructions.

Add a note with the Dashboard Notes plugin
The Dashboard Notes listing describes a widget-based setup. It also says the plugin requires Classic Widgets and does not work with Gutenberg; confirm that requirement suits your site before choosing it.

- In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins > Add New, find Dashboard Notes, install it, and activate it.
- Go to Appearance > Widgets.
- Find the new Dashboard Notes sidebar, then drag a widget into it and enter your note.
- Save the widget to reveal its settings. Set the display options you need and save again.
- Navigate to the dashboard or refresh it to see the note. To configure role visibility, go to Settings > Dashboard Notes.
These steps apply to Dashboard Notes specifically. Other plugins may use a different screen or configuration flow; follow the instructions on the selected plugin’s listing.
Check current compatibility before activating another option
For context, WordPress.org’s AdminPad listing showed version 2.7.1, 800+ active installations, WordPress 7.0 or higher, tested up to 7.1.2, and PHP 8.0 or higher when accessed on September 30, 2026. KeepInMind Dashboard Notes’ listing showed a WordPress 5.8 minimum, tested up to 7.0.5, and PHP 7.4 minimum when accessed on September 30, 2026. Check the current listing before installation; its descriptions cover contextual notes, access controls, and notes attached to specific admin elements.

Build a custom dashboard widget as a developer
If a plugin does not provide the behavior you need, WordPress’s Dashboard Widgets API lets developers add a custom widget. The official handbook identifies wp_add_dashboard_widget() as the main function and says the approach requires working knowledge of PHP and the WordPress Plugin API. It is a development route rather than a no-code dashboard setting.
