To add a custom thumbnail to a regular LinkedIn video post, use LinkedIn on a desktop browser: start a video post, upload your video, choose Video thumbnail, upload the image, then finish the post. LinkedIn’s documented mobile flow does not list a custom-thumbnail upload control, so desktop is the dependable documented route when the opening image matters.
Add a custom thumbnail to a LinkedIn video post
- Open LinkedIn on a desktop browser. In the share box at the top of your home feed, a Group, or a LinkedIn Page, click the video icon. You can also drag or paste a video into the share box.
- Choose Upload from computer, then select your video file.
- Wait for the upload editor to appear. Select Video thumbnail.
- Upload the image you want viewers to see as the video’s thumbnail. The official native-video help page does not publish a required thumbnail width, height, format, or maximum file size.
- Add captions if needed and select Next.
- Use the menu beside your name to set visibility and comment controls. Add post text, then click Post.
The thumbnail is selected inside the video-upload flow; it is not the same setting as a LinkedIn Page link-preview image, an article cover image, or an advertisement thumbnail.
Can you change the thumbnail on LinkedIn mobile?
LinkedIn’s listed mobile steps are: tap Post, tap the video icon, record or choose a video, optionally trim it or add stickers, text, and captions, continue to the post screen, and publish. Those instructions do not include a Video thumbnail upload control.

Controls can vary by account, app version, rollout, or surface.

Native video limits you should check before uploading
LinkedIn lists these requirements for native video uploads:
| Requirement | Published native-video limit |
|---|---|
| Maximum file size | 5 GB |
| Minimum file size | 75 KB |
| Maximum duration | 15 minutes |
| Minimum duration | 3 seconds on desktop; 2 seconds in the mobile app |
| Resolution | 256×144 through 4096×2304 |
| Aspect ratio | 1:2.4 through 2.4:1 |
| Frame rate | 10–60 fps |
| Bit rate | 192 Kbps–30 Mbps |
These figures are LinkedIn Help limits for the video file, not specifications for the separate thumbnail image. The help page was marked as last updated one year before the 2026-09-29 check, so confirm the limits in LinkedIn’s current upload interface if your file is near an edge.
Keep important video content inside the safe area
LinkedIn advises keeping key elements, text, and logos away from the top, bottom, and sides of the video, where interface controls can cover them. Treat that as video safe-zone guidance. It is not a published thumbnail-image sizing rule.
Thumbnail rules LinkedIn does not publish
For organic native-video posts, LinkedIn’s cited help page does not state a required custom-thumbnail dimension, file format, or maximum thumbnail size. Do not automatically apply specifications found for other LinkedIn surfaces.

- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.

- The 2 MB JPG/PNG rule belongs to video advertisements.
- The 1200×627 recommendation belongs to Page URL previews.
- Neither is established as the organic native-video-thumbnail requirement.
When the upload control rejects an image, try a conventional RGB JPG or PNG, remove unusual metadata, and export a reasonably sized file. Those are practical troubleshooting measures, not LinkedIn-published thumbnail limits.
Know which LinkedIn image you are changing
| Surface | Where the image is set | Who can set it and what it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Native video post | Video upload flow → Video thumbnail | The image associated with that uploaded video post. |
| Article cover video | Article editor’s cover-video thumbnail control | The cover for a LinkedIn article; article publishing is not available in the LinkedIn mobile app according to LinkedIn’s article help page. |
| Page URL preview | Paste an article or website URL into a Page post and customize the preview image and title | A super admin or content admin; changes the link preview, not a native video thumbnail. |
| Video advertisement | Ad creative setup | An optional ad thumbnail; JPG or PNG, maximum 2 MB, with aspect ratio and resolution matched to the video. |
| Immersive video feed | Members cannot directly post to this feed | LinkedIn may select existing LinkedIn videos based on quality and relevance; availability is not guaranteed for every member. |
Design a thumbnail that survives the feed
Make the subject clear at small size
Use one obvious subject, a short headline, and strong contrast. A thumbnail is often displayed much smaller than the file you upload, so tiny text and crowded layouts lose their meaning.
Keep text away from likely overlays
Apply LinkedIn’s video safe-zone advice to the image as well: leave breathing room near all edges, especially where playback controls, profile information, or captions may appear. This is a readability precaution, not a platform-mandated dimension.
Match the promise to the video
The thumbnail should accurately represent the first seconds and the topic of the video. Avoid an image that implies a result or scene the video never delivers; misleading packaging can reduce useful engagement and trust.

Troubleshooting the upload
The Video thumbnail option is missing
- Confirm you are using LinkedIn in a desktop browser and have uploaded a native video through the share box.
- Do not look for the control while creating a Page URL preview, article, or advertisement; those are separate editors.
- Refresh the page, disable extensions that alter upload dialogs, and try a current browser.
- If the control still does not appear, LinkedIn may be changing the interface or limiting the feature for that account or surface. Publish from desktop only after the control is visible.
The video will not upload
- Check the file against the 5 GB, 75 KB, 15-minute, resolution, aspect-ratio, frame-rate, and bit-rate limits above.
- Re-export a playable MP4 with standard audio and video settings if the file is technically within limits but fails processing.
- Try a smaller test file to distinguish a file problem from a browser or account problem.
The thumbnail image is rejected
Because LinkedIn does not publish organic-thumbnail dimensions or a maximum size in the cited help page, there is no official threshold to diagnose from. Re-export as a standard JPG or PNG, reduce the pixel dimensions and file size, remove transparency if the editor behaves unpredictably, and retry in the desktop flow. Do not assume the ad 2 MB limit applies to this post type.
The thumbnail looks different after publishing
Feed cards, profiles, search results, and other LinkedIn surfaces can crop or scale media differently. Keep the focal subject and essential wording away from the edges, and preview the published post on both desktop and mobile before relying on the result.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a LinkedIn publishing API, so it cannot attach an image to a LinkedIn post. It can still help when your thumbnail concept is a clean screenshot of a webpage: one request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. A one-call cURL example is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. If a clean webpage still is what you need for a LinkedIn thumbnail, create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
