Use Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux and Command+P on macOS in Chrome or Edge. Firefox provides a Save to PDF destination. The PDF is a print rendering of the opened archive, so always check that pages, images, and layout survived before sharing it.
What you need before converting MHTML to PDF
- The original
.mhtmlor.mhtfile. - A desktop browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox that can render that archive.
- A PDF destination supplied by the browser or operating system, such as Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Enough disk space for the resulting PDF and any temporary browser data.
MHTML is a web-page archive: it packages a page and associated resources into one file. Opening the archive and printing it are separate operations. Browser printing creates a document from the rendered page; it does not promise to preserve every script, hover state, animation, form control, or the exact on-screen layout.
Chrome on Windows or Linux
- Open Chrome and open the
.mhtmlor.mhtfile. You can double-click it, drag it into a Chrome window, or use Chrome’s Open File command. If the file manager does not associate the extension with Chrome, drag-and-drop is usually the quickest workaround. - Press Ctrl+P.
- In the print dialog, set Destination to Save as PDF. If your system exposes a different PDF printer, select that destination instead.
- Inspect the preview from the first page to the last. Set the page range, paper size, orientation, scale, and margins as needed. Use More settings for options such as headers and footers, background graphics, and per-page layout controls when available.
- Click Save, choose a filename and folder, and open the saved PDF to verify it.
Chrome’s documented desktop print flow uses Ctrl+P on Windows and Linux and a PDF-capable print destination. The exact list of settings can vary by operating-system version and installed printers.
Chrome on macOS
- Open the MHTML file in Chrome. If Finder does not open it in Chrome, drag the file into a browser window.
- Press Command+P.
- Choose Save as PDF or another PDF destination in the macOS print sheet.
- Review paper size, orientation, scale, margins, page range, and the preview. Then choose the PDF save command and select a location.
macOS may display its own print sheet rather than Chrome’s full preview. The PDF option is normally in the lower-left PDF menu or in the destination list, depending on the macOS version.

Microsoft Edge
- Open the
.mhtmlor.mhtfile in Edge. Dragging it into an Edge window is useful when a file association fails. - Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Select an available PDF destination, such as Save to PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Set the page range, paper size, orientation, scale, margins, and other options shown by the dialog.
- Check the preview, save the file, and reopen it in a PDF viewer.
When Immersive Reader helps
Edge documents Immersive Reader as a way to simplify printing on supported websites. It can remove surrounding page clutter before printing, but it is not guaranteed to work with a local MHTML archive. If the archive itself renders cleanly, print it directly rather than assuming Immersive Reader will be available.
Firefox
- Open the MHTML file in Firefox if your installed version renders that variant.
- Open the application menu and choose Print….
- In the destination selector, choose Save to PDF.
- Review the preview and adjust orientation, paper size, scale, margins, and page range.
- Save the PDF, then open it to confirm that the expected content is present.
Firefox’s print preview documents a Save to PDF destination for the displayed page. Support can differ between Firefox versions and between MHTML files created by different applications, so a second browser is a practical fallback.
Chrome on Android
- Open the MHTML file in Chrome if Android can access and render it. You may need to download it first or open it from a file-management app.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Share, and choose Print.
- Select Save as PDF as the printer or destination.
- Choose the page range, paper size, orientation, and output location, then tap the save control.
Android’s available destinations and file-picker labels vary by device manufacturer and installed print services. If Save as PDF is absent, install or enable the system print service and retry.
Print settings that affect the result
Page range
Use the preview to identify missing or unwanted pages. Printing all pages is safest for an archive whose length is uncertain; selecting a range avoids adding blank or navigation pages when you only need a section.

Paper size and orientation
Choose a paper size appropriate to the content. Landscape can prevent wide tables or dashboards from being clipped, while portrait is usually better for text-heavy pages.
Scale and margins
Reduce scale or use narrower margins when the right edge is cut off. Increasing scale improves readability but can create extra page breaks. The preview is the authority because browser pagination differs between documents.
Background graphics, headers, and footers
Background graphics may be required for colored panels or charts, but they increase file size and ink usage. Disable browser-generated headers and footers when you do not want the URL, date, or page title added to each page.
Dynamic and interactive content
Printing captures what the browser has rendered at print time. A script-driven chart, lazy-loaded image, video, animation, hover menu, or embedded control may be absent or appear as a static alternative. Compare the PDF with the opened archive before treating it as a complete record.

Troubleshooting MHTML-to-PDF conversion
The file will not open
- Confirm the extension is
.mhtmlor.mhtand that the file transfer completed. - Drag the file into Chrome or Edge instead of relying on the operating-system association.
- Try another Chromium-based browser. MHTML loading can be affected by browser security restrictions and by how the archive was created.
- Make a copy of the file before troubleshooting so the original remains unchanged.
The browser opens a blank page
The archive may be malformed, incomplete, or incompatible with that browser. Try Edge or Chrome, then Firefox if it supports the particular variant. If every browser is blank, obtain a fresh archive from the original source. A blank print preview will produce a blank PDF.
Only part of the page appears in the PDF
Check the print preview’s page range first. Then try a different paper size, orientation, scale, or margin setting. Content that loads only after a script runs may not have finished rendering; wait for the archive to settle and print again. If the archive depends on external resources that were not packaged, those resources may remain unavailable offline.
Images are missing or look different
Some archives contain references to resources that are blocked, expired, or not embedded. Compare the image in the browser view and preview. Changing scale will not restore an image that never rendered. Recreate the MHTML file while online if you control its creation.
Interactive elements do not work
A PDF is a static print result. Links may remain clickable, but scripts, forms, expanding sections, and hover behavior are not guaranteed. If interaction is essential, keep the original MHTML alongside the PDF.

The page looks cluttered
Remove browser headers and footers, adjust margins, or use a simplified reading view where the browser supports it. Edge’s Immersive Reader is documented for supported websites, not as a guaranteed transformation for local archives.
The PDF is unexpectedly large
Background graphics and high-resolution embedded images increase size. Disable background graphics when they are unnecessary, or print only the required page range. Do not reduce scale as a substitute for removing essential image quality.

Keep both files when provenance or interactivity matters. The MHTML is the archive; the PDF is the convenient, paginated representation.

When you can reach the original URL, printing that page directly may be simpler than opening a local archive. Government guidance for Windows and macOS describes built-in print-to-PDF paths, and Chrome offers Save as PDF on systems without a separate PDF printer. Direct printing also lets current resources load, although it means the result may differ from the older archived state.
