Its trade-offs are just as important: transfer quotas can restrict large shares, collaboration is less capable than a productivity suite, and losing both your password and recovery key can permanently block access to your files.
What is MEGA?
MEGA is a cloud-storage and communications service with desktop and mobile apps, synchronization, backups, file sharing, encrypted chat and calls, and a password manager. MEGA’s Android and iOS listings describe encryption and decryption occurring on users’ devices, so the company presents the service as client-side or zero-knowledge encrypted storage. Those are vendor product claims; protection can differ by feature.
For a current feature and safety overview, see Cloudwards’ MEGA review (updated September 22, 2026).
MEGA storage plans and what the free tier includes
The advertised free allowance is 20 GB, according to MEGA’s 2026 App Store listing and Cloudwards’ review. Cloudwards lists personal Pro tiers with 3 TB, 10 TB and 20 TB of storage. Exact prices, annual discounts, currencies and quotas can vary by country and billing period, so check the live regional checkout before subscribing.

Transfer quota can matter more than storage
Storage is the amount you keep in your account. Transfer quota is the data consumed when files are downloaded or streamed from MEGA. A 20 GB account can therefore still be a poor fit for distributing hundreds of gigabytes if recipients exhaust the plan’s transfer allowance.
Cloudwards reports that transfer restrictions apply to many plans and that recipient downloads can count toward sharing limits. The exact quota and how it resets should be checked for the plan and region you are buying. MEGA’s pricing page defines transfer as data consumed by downloading or streaming files; its current explanation is at the plan comparison page.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Practical effect on common workloads
- Personal backup: Transfer usually matters when restoring or repeatedly downloading large archives.
- One-time delivery: A shared video or project folder can consume quota as every recipient downloads it.
- Streaming: Repeated playback also consumes transfer, even though the file remains stored.
- Large teams: Estimate aggregate downloads, not just the amount uploaded by the owner.
Privacy, encryption and the recovery-key risk
MEGA says encryption and decryption happen on client devices and that it cannot reset a forgotten password. Its app listings instruct users to back up the account recovery key. If you lose both the password and recovery key, MEGA warns that you may lose access to the files.

An offline USB copy is one possible method, but it is a practical precaution rather than a MEGA requirement.
Do not treat “encrypted” as a guarantee that every MEGA product has identical protection. Cloudwards discusses historical concerns about flaws in MEGA’s encryption model, says MEGA made changes, and continues to express reservations. It also distinguishes products such as Transfer.it and S4 object storage from the core encrypted-storage experience. That discussion is a reviewer’s assessment, not a current independent audit or a substitute for technical analysis. Read the review at Cloudwards.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Sharing, links and device apps
MEGA’s mobile listings advertise file and folder sharing, password-protected links, link expiry, file-version history, transfers to people without MEGA accounts, camera backup, one-way folder backup, selective synchronization and encrypted chat and calls. These are advertised capabilities; the listings do not establish identical performance on every device or network.
Link controls are useful for sending files outside your account, but transfer quota remains the limiting factor for popular or repeatedly downloaded links. Set an expiry and password when appropriate, and monitor how broadly a link is distributed.

Collaboration: storage service, not a full office suite
MEGA supports shared folders and access across platforms, but current reviews describe real-time collaboration as limited. The Digital Project Manager notes that teams needing advanced collaboration may need another fit. Before standardizing on MEGA, check whether you require simultaneous document editing, granular team permissions, workflow approvals, extensive third-party integrations or centralized administration.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How fast is MEGA?
Cloudwards tested a 5 GB mixed-file folder from a virtual machine in Dublin. The reviewer first used a 1 Gbps fiber connection and then throttled it to 100 Mbps for a stable comparison. Under the 100 Mbps condition, the reported averages were 7 minutes 7 seconds for upload and 8 minutes 1 second for download. Cloudwards described speeds as stable; the full 1 Gbps results were faster but still not as fast as the reviewer wanted.
These are one publisher’s tests, not a service guarantee. Your route, ISP, device, encryption workload and file mix can produce different results.

Who should use MEGA?
Good fit
- People wanting encrypted cloud storage with a substantial free trial allowance.
- Users who need cross-platform sync, camera backup or one-way folder backup.
- Senders who value password-protected, expiring links and sharing with non-users.
- Individuals prepared to manage their own recovery key and monitor transfer usage.
Look elsewhere or compare carefully
- Teams that need rich simultaneous editing, workflow tools or deep integrations.
- Anyone distributing large files to many recipients without a clear transfer-quota budget.
- Users who cannot safely preserve a recovery key and password.
- Organizations requiring a current independent security audit before deployment.
What to check before choosing a plan
- Confirm the storage amount and the transfer quota for your country and billing period.
- Estimate recipient downloads, streaming and restores, not only the data you will upload.
- Read which features use the advertised client-side encryption and which products have separate terms.
- Test desktop and mobile apps, selective sync and backup workflow with representative files.
- Save and separately back up the recovery key before uploading irreplaceable data.
- For teams, verify administration, permissions, collaboration and integration requirements in a trial.
MEGA alternatives and comparison criteria
Cloudwards names Sync.com and Icedrive as alternatives for readers weighing client-side encryption and price. A team-oriented service may be a better choice when collaboration is decisive. Compare providers on the following points rather than choosing a universal winner:
- Free and paid storage, including the real local price and billing cadence.
- Transfer or egress limits and whether recipient downloads consume them.
- Encryption scope, recovery process and current independent security findings.
- Link passwords, expiration, version history and sharing with non-users.
- Collaboration, administration, permissions and third-party integrations.
- Desktop/mobile support, selective sync and backup controls.
MEGA 2026 verdict
MEGA is compelling when privacy-oriented storage, cross-device access and secure links matter more than office-suite collaboration. The 20 GB free tier makes it easy to try, but transfer quota is the practical constraint for heavy sharing. Treat the recovery key as essential account security, and regard historical encryption concerns as a reason to review the technical evidence and feature scope rather than as proof that the entire service is unsafe.
