Installing a website theme depends on your platform: WordPress lets you install theme files, Shopify accepts theme ZIP files and keeps them as drafts until you publish, while Wix lets you choose a theme in its editor. On any platform, preview the result and make a backup before editing or publishing.
Before you install a theme
A theme controls a website’s visual presentation and reusable layouts. First identify the platform and confirm that the theme is intended for it; a theme made for one platform generally cannot be installed on another. For paid or third-party themes, check the seller’s licensing and support terms. Preview the theme before switching your live site, and back up the current theme before making code changes.
Install a theme in WordPress
These steps apply to WordPress sites where you can access the administration screens and install themes. WordPress.org documents both theme-directory installation and uploading a ZIP file; FTP is another option for users who manage site files directly.
- Log in to the WordPress Administration Screens.
- Go to Appearance > Themes, then select Add New.
- Search or filter for a theme. Select Preview to inspect it before installation.
- Select Install when you are ready. To install a ZIP you already downloaded, select Upload Theme, choose the ZIP file, and upload it.
WordPress also supports installing extracted theme files through an FTP client. Use that route only if you are comfortable managing files on your hosting account. See the WordPress.org theme guide for its documented options.

Add a theme in Shopify
Shopify lets you add a free theme, try or buy a paid theme from its Theme Store, or upload a theme ZIP file. To upload a ZIP in the Shopify admin, open Online Store, choose Import theme > Upload zip file, select the file, and upload it.
A newly added theme appears as a draft. Customize and preview that draft, then publish it when it is ready. Only one theme can be published at a time; older themes remain available as drafts. Shopify’s theme installation guide covers these options.

Back up and check what changes with the theme
Before customizing, Shopify recommends duplicating the theme as a backup. Your products, collections, menus, pages, and blog posts are managed separately from the theme and are not deleted when you switch themes. Theme-specific settings—including global colors and fonts, wording, code customizations, and templates—belong to each theme, so review and adjust them for the theme you publish. Use the Shopify theme editor to change theme settings and add, edit, remove, or rearrange content.

Wix treats theme changes as an editor action rather than a file upload. In Wix Editor, open Site Design, choose Change Theme, and select a theme. You can then customize its fonts and colors. To add elements that follow the selected theme, use Add Elements. Wix explains the process in its site theme guide.

How the installation process differs
| Platform | How you add or change a theme | Upload options | Preview, backup, and switching notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Install from Appearance > Themes > Add New. | Theme directory search, ZIP upload, or FTP installation of extracted files. | Preview before installing. The cited WordPress guide describes preview and installation but does not state a theme-specific rollback procedure. |
| Shopify | Add a theme in the Shopify admin; a new theme is a draft until published. | Theme Store options or ZIP upload through Online Store > Import theme > Upload zip file. | Customize and preview drafts before publishing. Duplicate a theme before customizing; only one theme can be published at once, and older themes remain as drafts. |
| Wix | Choose a theme in Wix Editor under Site Design > Change Theme. | The documented process selects a theme in the editor; ZIP or FTP upload is not stated in the cited guide. | Customize fonts and colors in the editor. The cited guide does not state a theme backup or rollback procedure. |
Check the result before publishing
- Preview important pages and reusable layouts, not just the home page.
- Check that colors, fonts, wording, and other theme-specific settings look right.
- On Shopify, review each theme’s settings and templates because they are associated with that theme, even though store content is separate.
- Keep a backup before code customization, and publish or switch only after the preview looks right.
