First identify what the URL opens. If it is a webpage, render the page in a browser and save a screenshot as JPEG. If it points directly to an image file, download that file and convert it with an image tool that supports its format. A URL is an address, not an image format, so these are two different jobs.
Choose the right URL-to-JPEG method
| What the URL serves | What to do | Key decision |
|---|---|---|
| A rendered webpage | Capture it with a browser screenshot tool | Choose viewport, element, or full-page scope; set JPEG output and pixel scale |
| An image file | Download and convert the file locally | Check its real format and confirm your converter supports it |
Opening a webpage URL does not download a single image: the browser has to render the page before a screenshot can be made. Conversely, if a URL points to a JPEG, PNG, or another image file, a browser screenshot is usually an unnecessary extra step.
Capture a webpage URL as a JPEG with Playwright
Playwright supports screenshots of the visible viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page, and JPEG is an available output type. Its default scale is CSS pixels; device-pixel scaling can produce a higher-resolution capture. See the Playwright screenshot documentation for the screenshot options.
Install Playwright
For a simple Node.js project, install the package and its browser binaries:

npm init -ynpm install playwrightnpx playwright install chromium
Save the following as capture.js. It opens the supplied page, waits for the browser’s load event, captures the current viewport in JPEG format, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) {
console.error('Usage: node capture.js https://example.com');
process.exitCode = 1;
return;
}
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.jpeg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 85 });
console.log('Saved page.jpeg');
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Run it with node capture.js https://example.com, replacing the example URL with the page you want. The result is a JPEG of the viewport at the configured 1280-by-800 CSS-pixel viewport. The quality value controls JPEG compression; if fine details look smeared, raise it, accepting a larger file. If the destination requires another size, adjust the viewport or use an image-resizing step after capture.
Capture a whole page or one element
For a full-page screenshot, replace the screenshot line with:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.jpeg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 85, fullPage: true });
This is appropriate when content below the initial viewport matters. For a single component, select it and capture only that element:

- Scan books and photo albums — high-rise, removable lid
await page.locator('.article').screenshot({ path: 'article.jpeg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 85 });
Replace .article with a CSS selector that identifies the desired element. If the selector matches nothing, the capture cannot succeed; use a selector present on the page and, for content that appears late, wait for it before capturing:
await page.locator('.article').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
await page.locator('.article').screenshot({ path: 'article.jpeg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 85 });
To request device-pixel scaling rather than CSS-pixel scaling, set the screenshot’s scale option to device. This changes output pixel dimensions and can increase file size; it does not change which part of the page is captured.
Navigation and page readiness
The example waits for the page’s load event. Pages that fetch or reveal important content afterward may need an additional wait for a known selector, or a short delay. A fixed delay is easy but may waste time or still be too short on a slow page; waiting for a specific visible element is generally a more targeted condition. For pages that never settle because of ongoing network activity, avoid assuming that all network traffic must stop before a useful screenshot can be taken.
Capture with Puppeteer instead
Puppeteer’s documented workflow is to launch a browser, open a page, navigate to a URL, take a screenshot, and close the browser. Its basic example writes PNG, so explicitly set JPEG output rather than merely naming a PNG capture with a .jpeg extension. The Puppeteer Page API documents the page operations; its opened API page displayed version 25.12.0 on September 29, 2026, but API options can change.

For a new Node project, install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer, then save this as capture-puppeteer.js:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) {
console.error('Usage: node capture-puppeteer.js https://example.com');
process.exitCode = 1;
return;
}
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.jpeg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 85 });
console.log('Saved page.jpeg');
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Run node capture-puppeteer.js https://example.com. Choose Puppeteer or Playwright according to the rest of your automation stack; both approaches require a browser and an explicit JPEG capture setting.
Download and convert a direct image URL
When the URL returns an image rather than a webpage, download the file and use an image converter. For example, with ImageMagick installed, download the source and convert it:
curl -L "https://example.com/image.png" -o source-image
magick source-image converted.jpeg
Replace the example URL with the image URL. The -L option follows redirects; the local filename intentionally has no claimed format, so ImageMagick inspects the file data instead of trusting a renamed extension. If you know the source format, you can give the downloaded file a matching extension for easier handling.

ImageMagick’s format support depends on how the local installation was built and on available delegate libraries or external programs. Check what your installation supports with magick identify -list format. To inspect an existing image’s properties in more detail, run magick identify -verbose source-image. The ImageMagick format guide explains format support and these inspection commands.
Renaming a file from .png to .jpg changes its name, not its encoded image data. Run an actual conversion and inspect the output; where appearance matters, open the JPEG and check that details and colors remain acceptable.
Or skip the browser setup
If your input is a webpage and you would rather call a screenshot API than install and manage a browser, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Set JPEG as the requested output using the current API documentation; the example below shows the one-call request shape and saves the response body. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current output-format parameter and other options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://example.com
-o shot.jpeg
The file extension does not set the response format by itself: request JPEG in the API options documented for your account, then use a matching output filename. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot common conversion problems
The JPEG file will not open or is actually PNG
- Cause: The screenshot was captured as PNG, or a file was only renamed with a
.jpegextension. - Fix: Set the browser screenshot type to
jpeg, or convert the downloaded image with an image tool. Confirm the actual file format rather than relying on its name.
The capture is cut off below the fold
- Cause: A viewport screenshot includes only the visible browser area.
- Fix: Use full-page capture when the complete scrollable page is needed, or capture a specific element for a focused result.
Images or text are missing from the screenshot
- Cause: The page had not finished rendering the relevant content when the screenshot ran.
- Fix: Wait for a relevant element to become visible or use a suitable delay. For lazy-loaded content lower on a long page, make sure the page has loaded that content before taking the full-page capture.
Navigation times out or hangs
- Cause: The destination is slow, unavailable, or keeps network activity open.
- Fix: Check the URL in a regular browser, raise the timeout for a genuinely slow page, or wait for a specific page element instead of requiring every request to finish.
ImageMagick reports an unsupported format
- Cause: The local installation lacks support for the source format or a required delegate.
- Fix: Check
magick identify -list format, install a build with the needed support, or convert the source to a supported format first.
The converted image looks different or is unexpectedly large
- Cause: JPEG is a compressed output, and screenshot dimensions and quality settings affect file size and visible detail.
- Fix: Inspect the actual JPEG, tune the quality value, and adjust capture dimensions or scaling to fit the intended use. Do not use a higher pixel scale unless the extra detail is needed.
Quality, performance, and cost considerations
- Scope: A viewport capture is generally smaller and quicker than capturing a long full page; an element screenshot limits the output to the selected content.
- Resolution: CSS-pixel scale follows the browser viewport’s CSS dimensions, while device-pixel scale produces a higher-resolution image. Larger output can mean larger files and more processing.
- Repeatability: Browser automation is useful for repeat runs because the navigation and screenshot steps can be scripted. It also means maintaining the runtime and browser installation.
- Image conversion: Local conversion avoids rendering an image as a webpage, but success depends on installed format support. Check the converter before building a batch workflow around an uncommon source format.
- Service costs and privacy: Online converters differ in price, quality, privacy, and file retention. The cited documentation does not establish comparable terms for generic converter services, so check a provider’s current documentation and policy before submitting a URL or file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a webpage URL directly with ImageMagick?
Not as a webpage screenshot. ImageMagick converts image files; a webpage must first be rendered in a browser or captured by a screenshot service.
Does changing .png to .jpg convert the image?
No. Renaming changes only the filename. Use an image converter to encode JPEG data.
Which output should I use for an entire webpage?
Use a browser screenshot with full-page capture enabled; a default viewport screenshot omits content outside the visible area.
