For a normal screenshot in Windows 11, press Windows key + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool’s capture controls. For text visible in a screenshot, open the snip and choose Text actions. Windows’ newer AI-assisted options have narrower eligibility: Perfect Screenshot and Click to Do are Copilot+ PC features, while Recall is an optional way to search snapshots of past activity. You do not need a Copilot+ PC for ordinary screenshots or Snipping Tool’s documented text recognition.

Choose the feature that matches what you want to do

“AI screenshot” can mean several different things in Windows 11. Some features capture a screen, some extract text, some offer actions on what is visible, and one can help find things you saw earlier. They are not interchangeable, and the Copilot+ PC label matters for certain features.

What you want Use Eligibility and handling
Capture a screen or selected area Snipping Tool Microsoft documents standard capture separately from the Copilot+ PC-only features.
Copy text from a screenshot Snipping Tool’s Text actions Text recognition is performed locally on the device, according to Microsoft.
Automatically frame visible content, or act on visible text and images Perfect Screenshot or Click to Do These are Copilot+ PC features. Click to Do also has documented hardware requirements, and available actions vary by region and language.
Find something seen earlier Recall An optional, opt-in snapshot experience on supported Copilot+ PCs.
Ask about screen content Copilot for Windows Its screenshot workflow shares all or part of the screen with Copilot; check the app’s current interface and controls.

Microsoft’s guides: Snipping Tool, Click to Do, Recall, and Copilot on Windows.

Take a screenshot with Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool is the right starting point for a one-off screenshot. It offers four capture shapes: freeform, rectangular, window, and full screen. You can also open the app directly if you want to choose a mode before capturing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + Shift + S, or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Freeform, Rectangle, Window, or Full screen.
  3. Select or mark the content to capture. For a window capture, choose the window you want.
  4. Open the resulting snip in Snipping Tool to annotate or crop it, then save or share it.

For a video snip, Microsoft documents the app’s Record control or the shortcut Windows key + Shift + R. Video recording is different from taking a still screenshot; use it when the movement or sequence matters.

Copy text from an image with Text actions

If words are visible on screen but cannot be selected normally, capture the area and use Snipping Tool’s OCR. Microsoft calls this Text actions; it is a text-recognition workflow, not a chat with an AI assistant.

  1. Capture the relevant area with Snipping Tool.
  2. Open the capture in Snipping Tool and select Text actions.
  3. Select the words you need and copy them, or choose Copy all text for the full recognized result.
  4. If appropriate, use Quick redact to cover detected email addresses or phone numbers before sharing the image.

Microsoft says recognition is performed locally on the device. OCR can save retyping, but inspect the copied result before relying on it: the visible screenshot remains the source, and the feature is intended to recognize text rather than explain or verify it.

Use Perfect Screenshot to frame content

Perfect Screenshot adjusts a rectangular selection to frame on-screen content more tightly. It is documented as a Copilot+ PC-only feature, so it should not be expected on every Windows 11 computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Snipping Tool on an eligible Copilot+ PC, choose Perfect Screenshot.
  2. Draw a rectangular selection around the content.
  3. Review the automatically adjusted frame and use the crop handles to refine it manually if needed.

Microsoft also marks Snipping Tool’s Color picker as Copilot+ PC-only. Feature presence can depend on device eligibility and Windows configuration, so the absence of these options does not mean ordinary Snipping Tool capture is unavailable.

Use Click to Do for on-screen actions

Click to Do identifies text and images on screen and offers actions suited to the selection. Depending on what is recognized and what is available in your region and language, examples in Microsoft’s guidance include copying text, searching the web, opening a website, copying or saving an image, opening an image in Photos, Snipping Tool, or Paint, and asking Copilot.

Check eligibility first

Microsoft lists the following requirements for Click to Do: a Copilot+ PC or eligible Cloud PC, a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB RAM, 8 logical processors, and 256 GB storage. These are Microsoft’s documented specifications, not a guarantee that every device marketed as an “AI PC” qualifies. Check the device and current Windows feature availability rather than relying on the marketing label alone.

Open Click to Do

Microsoft lists these entry paths:

  • Press Windows key + Q.
  • Press the Windows key and left-click.
  • On a touch-enabled PC, swipe right.
  • Choose the Click to Do control in Snipping Tool. This Snipping Tool entry point requires version 11.2411.20.0 or later.

After the screen is analyzed, select identified text or an image and choose an available action. Menus can differ across locales; Microsoft’s guidance notes regional differences, including restrictions in the European Economic Area and China.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know when selected content leaves the device

Microsoft describes Click to Do’s screen analysis as local. Some actions are online by design: for example, choosing web search or visual search sends the selected content to an online provider. Treat the action as a separate decision from the local analysis. Before choosing an online action, consider whether the selection contains private, work, or otherwise sensitive information.

Use Recall to find something from earlier

Recall is for retrieving something you previously saw, rather than making a single hand-made screenshot. It is an optional snapshot experience on supported Copilot+ PCs, and saving snapshots requires opting in. Once enabled, you can search using remembered text or describe what you recall seeing, open a matching snapshot, and then use Click to Do where available.

Rank #3

Microsoft says Recall uses local OCR and stores encrypted snapshots and derived context on the device, with Windows Hello protection. Its controls let you pause saving, delete snapshots, or turn saving off. Recall search is distinct from capturing a new image: use Snipping Tool when you need a deliberate screenshot now, and consider Recall when you want to retrieve opted-in snapshots of past activity.

A snapshot may contain information beyond the detail you later want to find. Review Recall’s settings and controls before opting in, and use the pause, deletion, or off controls when they better fit your needs. If you take an action from a snapshot that sends selected material to an online provider, consider that action’s data handling separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask Copilot about what is on screen

Copilot for Windows has a screenshot workflow for capturing and sharing all or part of the screen as context for a question. This is different from Text actions: Snipping Tool’s OCR extracts text locally, whereas asking Copilot sends the screenshot content to Copilot so you can ask about it. Use the Copilot app’s current interface to review what will be captured and shared; availability and controls can change.

For a question about visible material, select only the relevant portion if the interface offers that choice. Avoid including unrelated account details, messages, or other private content in a screenshot you share with an online service.

Which Windows 11 screenshot method should you use?

  • Need a screenshot to save or send? Use Snipping Tool and choose the capture shape that fits.
  • Need words from a screenshot? Open the snip and use Text actions; copy selected text or all recognized text.
  • Want an automatically tighter crop? Look for Perfect Screenshot on a Copilot+ PC.
  • Want actions on visible text or pictures? Check Click to Do eligibility and inspect its available actions.
  • Trying to find a screen from earlier? Recall is relevant only if you opted in to saving snapshots on a supported device.
  • Need an explanation or answer about screen contents? Copilot’s screenshot workflow shares screen content with Copilot; it is not the same as local OCR.

For developers automating screenshots of public web pages, a desktop capture workflow is not the same as a website screenshot API. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it returns a screenshot or PDF of a URL, not a capture of your Windows desktop.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot of a webpage rather than the Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. The API supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP output, as well as PDF. Its clean-shot steps can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example cURL request (replace the URL as needed; obtain an API key first):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The same API supports Python and Node.js:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

One request is enough for a basic webpage capture; optional controls include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, viewport and device presets, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, wait conditions, request blocking, headers and cookies, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and a usage API. Its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching simpler.

ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 shots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is on every plan. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and the free tier includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card. Troubleshooting Windows 11 screenshot features

Windows key + Shift + S does not open the capture controls

Open Snipping Tool directly from Start and start a capture there. This separates a shortcut problem from the app’s capture function. If the shortcut opens a different tool or no interface, use the app entry point while checking Windows configuration and app availability.

Text actions or Copy all text is missing

First open an actual snip in Snipping Tool; Text actions belongs to the captured-image workflow. If the control still is not available, check the current Snipping Tool interface and Windows configuration. Do not confuse it with Click to Do, which has separate Copilot+ PC eligibility.

Perfect Screenshot or Color picker is absent

Microsoft documents both as Copilot+ PC-only. Standard capture can still be used without them; use a normal rectangular snip and adjust it with crop handles if the feature is unavailable.

Click to Do does not appear in Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool entry point requires version 11.2411.20.0 or later. Also check the documented Copilot+ PC or eligible Cloud PC hardware requirements. Microsoft lists alternate launch methods, but eligibility and availability still apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An expected Click to Do action is missing

Available actions vary by region and language, and some features have regional restrictions. The identified content also affects which actions make sense. Try another listed entry point only if Click to Do is available on the device; it does not remove the feature’s eligibility requirements.

Recall has no earlier activity to search

Recall saving is opt-in. If snapshot saving was not enabled, there may be no saved snapshots to retrieve. Recall is for opted-in past activity, not a replacement for taking a new screenshot with Snipping Tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is Snipping Tool itself an AI screenshot tool?

It is Windows’ built-in capture app with several capabilities. Text actions uses OCR; Perfect Screenshot and Color picker are documented as Copilot+ PC-only. The label “AI screenshot tool” does not describe one universal feature available on every Windows 11 PC.

Can I use Click to Do from a Cloud PC?

Microsoft’s requirements list includes an eligible Cloud PC as well as a Copilot+ PC. The device or Cloud PC must also meet the listed hardware specifications, and feature availability can vary.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Recall continuously save screenshots by default?

Microsoft says a user must opt in to saving Recall snapshots. Saving can be paused or turned off, and snapshots can be deleted.

Does ScreenshotNeo capture my Windows desktop?

No. ScreenshotNeo takes screenshots of website URLs and can return PDFs; use Windows’ Snipping Tool for a screenshot of your desktop or an app window.
