Use HtmlAgilityPack (HAP) when you want a forgiving HTML DOM and XPath; choose AngleSharp when standards-oriented HTML5 parsing, CSS selectors, and a browser-familiar DOM matter more. Neither is the universal winner. Test your real documents and queries, and check that the package supports your .NET target. If you need to interact with a live page or run its client-side code, that is browser automation or rendering—not just parsing.
HtmlAgilityPack vs. AngleSharp: the practical difference
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| XPath queries, a read/write DOM, or extraction from irregular supplied HTML | HtmlAgilityPack | Its package listing describes a DOM with XPath and XSLT support and tolerance for malformed real-world HTML. |
| Standards-oriented HTML5 parsing, CSS selectors, or browser-familiar DOM methods | AngleSharp | It documents parsing based on official specifications and methods such as querySelector and querySelectorAll. |
| Forms, clicks, or JavaScript-generated content in a live page | A browser automation or rendering layer | A parser works on HTML it receives; it does not, by itself, execute a page as a browser does. |
AngleSharp’s project README describes its DOM as using the official W3C-specified API and points to methods such as querySelectorAll as a distinction from similar libraries including HAP. That is the project’s own comparison, not an independent benchmark. The choice is best made by matching parsing behavior and query style to the job.
When HtmlAgilityPack is the right choice
HAP is a good fit when HTML is already available and your extraction logic is naturally expressed with XPath. Its object model is described as similar to System.Xml, and it can parse from files or streams. The NuGet listing reviewed for this guide identifies HtmlAgilityPack 1.13.0; package versions and supported targets can change, so verify the current listing and compatibility before installing.
Its tolerance for malformed markup can help with imperfect input, but tolerant parsing is not a promise that every malformed document will produce the tree your extractor expects. Check the actual output for the documents that matter, especially where missing closing tags or unusual nesting affect which node an XPath selects.

Install and extract with XPath
Install the package from NuGet using your normal .NET package workflow, or run:
dotnet add package HtmlAgilityPack
This example loads supplied HTML and selects links below an element with the ID content:
using HtmlAgilityPack;
var html = "<main id='content'><a href='/guide'>Guide</a></main>";
var document = new HtmlDocument();
document.LoadHtml(html);
var links = document.DocumentNode.SelectNodes("//*[@id='content']//a[@href]");
if (links is not null)
{
foreach (var link in links)
{
var href = link.GetAttributeValue("href", "");
var text = HtmlEntity.DeEntitize(link.InnerText).Trim();
Console.WriteLine($"{text}: {href}");
}
}
SelectNodes can return no matches, so guard against a missing result rather than assuming a document always contains the target. Treat extracted attributes and text as input that may need validation or normalization for your application.

When AngleSharp is the right choice
Choose AngleSharp when standards-oriented HTML parsing and CSS-selector queries fit better than XPath. Its documented scope includes HTML, SVG, and MathML, with CSS parsing and DOM query methods such as querySelector and querySelectorAll. Its core project describes HTML5 parsing in terms of specification-defined error handling and element correction.
AngleSharp’s documented target list includes netstandard2.0, net8.0, and net10.0, with net462 and net472 listed for Windows builds. Confirm the target matrix for the package version you intend to use; migration history shows that older framework support has changed. The core project README identifies an MIT license. Do not assume that every optional capability is bundled in the core package: the project has companion packages for areas such as CSS, JavaScript integration, XML/XHTML, rendering, and XPath support.
Install and select with CSS
Install AngleSharp from NuGet:
dotnet add package AngleSharp
Parse an HTML string and select matching links:
using AngleSharp;
var html = "<main id='content'><a href='/guide'>Guide</a></main>";
var context = BrowsingContext.New(Configuration.Default);
var document = await context.OpenAsync(request => request.Content(html));
foreach (var link in document.QuerySelectorAll("#content a[href]"))
{
var href = link.GetAttribute("href") ?? "";
var text = link.TextContent.Trim();
Console.WriteLine($"{text}: {href}");
}
This parses the HTML you supply; it is not a request to a remote website, nor does it run that website’s scripts. Keep acquisition of a page separate from parsing so you can tell whether a problem lies in the fetched response or in your selector.
How to choose for your application
- Decide what input you have. If another component gives you HTML, a parser may be all you need. If the required content only appears after JavaScript runs or after interaction, plan for a browser or rendering step first.
- Match query style to the codebase. Prefer HAP if XPath and an XML-like object model suit your team; prefer AngleSharp if CSS selectors and standard DOM methods are a better fit.
- Test parsing behavior on representative documents. Include malformed examples, the real page templates, and cases where missing or nested elements could change extraction results. Compare selected nodes and resulting values, not just whether parsing completes.
- Check required features and targets. For AngleSharp, verify the framework target and whether a desired capability requires a companion package. For either library, confirm the package version and its compatibility with your application.
- Measure performance only if it matters to the workload. Use the same corpus, runtime, selectors, and output requirements when comparing candidates.
Performance, reliability, and cost
There is no neutral, controlled, current benchmark here establishing a universal speed winner between HAP and AngleSharp. AngleSharp’s project describes its performance positively, and a vendor guide calls HAP fast and memory-efficient, but those claims do not settle which is faster for your documents, selectors, runtime, or memory constraints. If throughput matters, benchmark both with representative input and the complete extraction work your application performs.
For reliability, distinguish parser success from extraction correctness. A parser can return a DOM while your selector finds nothing, matches the wrong repeated element, or reads unexpected text. Validate required fields and test both normal and malformed input. Both libraries are software packages; the reviewed material does not establish a price comparison suitable for this decision.

Fizzler for CSS selectors with HAP
Fizzler is described as a CSS selector engine or add-on for HAP, rather than a parser on its own. It may be relevant if you have an existing HAP application and want selector syntax. A secondary guide says the HAP adapter has not been updated since 2020; maintenance and compatibility can change, so check the package’s current activity and target compatibility before using it in a new project.

Selenium when a browser must act
Selenium WebDriver belongs in workflows that need browser interaction, forms, or client-side page execution. It is not simply another HTML parser. For already-available HTML that only needs structural extraction, keep parsing as a separate component.
Regular expressions are not a general HTML parser
Regex can be useful for a narrow text pattern after you have extracted the relevant content. It is brittle as a substitute for structural parsing because HTML structure and whitespace can vary. Use a parser to locate elements and relationships rather than trying to recognize arbitrary HTML with one pattern.
Majestic-12
A vendor guide lists Majestic-12 as a legacy alternative but does not establish a neutral assessment of its current lifecycle. Treat it as a historical option unless you independently confirm the present repository, package status, and compatibility you need.

When ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement HTML DOM parser. Try it first when the adjacent problem is obtaining a screenshot or PDF of a page, rather than querying supplied HTML. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For a screenshot, make one GET request; save the response as an image or request PDF as appropriate. The following cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. The service also supports PNG, JPEG, PDF, full-page capture, element selection, viewport and device settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, and other capture controls. For parsing, you still need HTML as input; a screenshot is an image, not a DOM.
Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, then paid tiers from $5 for 3,000 screenshots; every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try it with 1,000 screenshots a month and no card.

- No nodes returned: Check that the input is the HTML you expect, then inspect the parsed tree and verify the selector or XPath against it. Account for missing elements with explicit null or empty-result handling.
- The output differs from a browser: Confirm whether the content depends on client-side execution or interaction. A parser of supplied markup does not provide those browser behaviors; acquire rendered HTML with an appropriate browser layer before parsing.
- Malformed markup selects the wrong element: Compare the resulting DOM with the original fragment and add that document to regression tests. HAP’s tolerance is useful, but your extraction still depends on how the input is interpreted.
- AngleSharp is unavailable for the target: Compare the application’s framework with the package version’s target matrix and select a compatible version or library. Do not assume historical targets remain supported.
- A feature is missing from AngleSharp core: Check whether it is provided by a companion project and whether that package fits your target; do not infer that related capabilities are included in the core install.
- Throughput is unexpectedly low: Benchmark a representative end-to-end workload and check whether parsing, selection, network acquisition, or other processing dominates. Vendor descriptions alone do not identify the bottleneck.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use XPath with AngleSharp?
The project lists XPath support among its companion projects; check the relevant package rather than assuming XPath comes with the core package.
Can HtmlAgilityPack execute JavaScript?
HAP is described as an HTML DOM parser, not a JavaScript-running browser. Use a browser automation or rendering layer when scripts must execute.
Which library should I start with if I have no legacy constraints?
Start with the query API and parsing model that match your extraction requirements, then test both candidates on representative documents if either could work. There is no evidence here for a universal winner.
