Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo screenshot one visible website component, select the DOM element that contains the complete visual unit, verify its boundary in DevTools, then use the browser’s node-screenshot command. Chrome and Firefox both let you pick a live element instead of capturing the whole page. You can also locate a node by text, CSS selector, or XPath, check its accessibility semantics, and automate repeat captures with Firefox’s :screenshot helper.
What “select an element” means
A webpage is a tree of DOM nodes. A card, navigation bar, button, chart, or modal may be represented by one node or by many nested nodes. The reliable target is the smallest node that includes everything the reader should see: background, border, padding, images, and required text. Selecting only a heading or paragraph produces a technically valid screenshot that is visually incomplete.
Selection is not the same as dragging a rectangle over pixels. DevTools identifies the underlying node, so the capture follows the element’s rendered dimensions and can be repeated with a selector.
Chrome: pick and capture a node
1. Open DevTools and activate Inspect mode
- Open the page you want to document.
- Open DevTools with
F12,Ctrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux), orCmd+Option+I(macOS). - Click the element-picker icon (a pointer in a square) or press
Ctrl+Shift+C/Cmd+Shift+C. - Move over the page. Chrome outlines the element under the pointer and shows a tooltip with useful style information. Chrome describes Inspect mode as a way to “hover over elements on your page and view style and accessibility information” (Chrome for Developers).
- Click when the highlight encloses the complete component.
2. Validate the boundary
Look at the highlighted rectangle and the selected node in the Elements panel. Confirm that it includes the visible background, border, shadow, image, and text. The tooltip can show dimensions, background and text colors, font properties, padding, and margin. If the highlight is too small, move up the DOM tree with the parent node until the whole component is included. If it is too large, choose a more specific child.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
For a control or interaction screenshot, inspect the accessibility information as well. Chrome can expose the accessible name, role, and whether the element is keyboard-focusable. That helps you avoid documenting a decorative wrapper instead of the actual button or link.
3. Find a node when clicking is difficult
Dynamic pages, overlays, and tiny targets can make the picker awkward. With the Elements panel focused, press Ctrl+F or Cmd+F. Chrome’s search accepts visible text, CSS selectors, and XPath expressions (Chrome search documentation). Search for a stable class, an accessible label, or a distinctive piece of text, then review each match in the page highlight.
4. Capture the selected node
- Right-click the selected node in the Elements tree.
- Choose the node screenshot command (the wording can vary slightly by Chrome version).
- Chrome downloads an image containing the rendered node rather than the surrounding page.
If the result is clipped, return to the boundary check. A child with fixed dimensions may omit overflow from a larger component; a parent may be needed. Expand collapsed content or scroll the component into view before capturing.
Firefox: Inspector and Screenshot Node
1. Select the element
- Open Developer Tools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+I/Cmd+Option+I. - In the Inspector, activate the node picker and click the component on the page.
- Firefox selects the corresponding DOM node in the Inspector, where you can inspect its box model and computed styles.
2. Capture the node
In the Inspector’s HTML pane, open the selected element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node. Firefox documents this as the direct way to take a screenshot of a single page element (Firefox Source Docs).

3. Repeat captures with :screenshot
Firefox’s command-line-style helper accepts a CSS selector and options such as delay, device-pixel ratio, and filename. In the Web Console, a typical command is:
:screenshot --selector ".pricing-card" --dpr 2 --delay 500 --filename pricing-card.png
Replace .pricing-card with a selector that identifies the intended node. A delay gives animations or lazy content time to settle; a higher device-pixel ratio produces a larger, sharper file but also increases its dimensions.
Choosing a dependable selector
Prefer stable identity
- Use an existing semantic class, ID, or data attribute intended for testing, such as
[data-testid="checkout-summary"]. - Prefer a unique accessible label or role when the page supplies one.
- Avoid generated classes, position-based selectors such as
div:nth-child(4), and long chains tied to layout. They often change after a redesign.
CSS selector or XPath?
CSS is usually shorter and is accepted by Firefox’s screenshot helper. XPath is useful when you need relationships or exact text, for example locating a button beside a particular heading. Chrome’s Elements search supports both. Whichever you use, test that it resolves to one intended node; multiple matches make automation ambiguous.
Check state before capture
Open menus, focus fields, or trigger validation messages before selecting the node if the screenshot is meant to document that state. Confirm the viewport, zoom, responsive breakpoint, and color scheme. A selector identifies the node, not the state of the application around it.

Common problems and fixes
The highlight covers only text
You selected a nested text node. Choose the nearest parent that owns the component’s background and spacing.
The screenshot misses an image or shadow
The asset may be lazy-loaded, outside the node, or clipped by an overflow rule. Scroll the component into view, wait for the image to appear, and inspect parent containers for overflow:hidden. If the shadow belongs to a wrapper, capture that wrapper.
A cookie banner or popup obscures the component
Dismiss the banner or close the popup before picking the node. If it is part of the state you need to document, select the overlay itself and verify its stacking context.
The selector stops working after a redesign
Replace layout-dependent selectors with a stable ID, semantic class, or data attribute. Keep a small selector test that reports zero or multiple matches instead of silently capturing the wrong node.
The capture is blurry
Increase browser zoom or device-pixel ratio, but keep the output dimensions appropriate for its destination. Firefox’s --dpr option controls pixel density; very large values create heavy files.

Only part of a dynamic component appears
Pause animation, wait for network requests and fonts to finish, and capture after the final state is visible. A delayed helper command can help, but it cannot repair a component that is still changing.
Built-in node capture is ideal for a one-off explanation, bug report, accessibility review, or design handoff. It is free, requires no service account, and lets you inspect exactly what the browser rendered. It is less convenient for scheduled jobs, many URLs, authenticated workflows, PDFs, or a pipeline that must return the same output every time. Those cases benefit from a screenshot API with explicit wait, viewport, authentication, and failure handling. ScreenshotNeo captures a selected element by CSS selector through one HTTP request, so you can keep the repeatable part of this workflow in code. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. For element selection, pass the selector for the component you validated in DevTools. The API also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, hidden selectors, blocked ads or resource types, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration. Free tools Windows power users keep installed One-click scans. No signup required. See the complete parameter list and element examples in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Plans include 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account. Yes. Chrome’s Elements-panel search accepts XPath as well as visible text and CSS selectors. Firefox’s documented screenshot helper uses a CSS selector, so convert the locator when using that command. No. It follows the selected node’s rendered box. Select a parent when the visual background, shadow, or required content belongs to a wrapper. Make the desired state visible first. A screenshot command captures rendered output; it does not automatically reveal nodes hidden by CSS or application logic. Select the smallest DOM node that contains the complete visual component, verify its dimensions and semantics, then use Chrome’s node capture or Firefox’s Screenshot Node. For repeatable, API-driven element captures, use a stable CSS selector with ScreenshotNeo. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
