YouTube does not specify a universal thumbnail size in inches. It specifies pixel dimensions and aspect ratios; the inch measurement depends on the pixel density of the screen or print where the image is shown. For a standard video, YouTube currently recommends a 3840 × 2160-pixel, 16:9 thumbnail. For a Short, it recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, in a 9:16 portrait orientation.
Why YouTube thumbnail size is given in pixels, not inches
A pixel is a unit of image dimensions; an inch is a unit of physical length. There is no fixed conversion between them unless you also know the image’s pixel density, commonly expressed as pixels per inch (PPI). The same 3840 × 2160-pixel image could be displayed at different physical sizes on different screens or printed at different sizes by choosing a different PPI.
For example, at 300 PPI, a 3840 × 2160 image would print at 12.8 × 7.2 inches. At 150 PPI, the same image would print at 25.6 × 14.4 inches. Those are arithmetic examples, not YouTube requirements or guarantees about how a thumbnail will look on a particular display. For uploading to YouTube, use the pixel dimensions and ratio—not a target inch measurement.
Recommended dimensions by thumbnail type
| Thumbnail type | YouTube recommendation | Aspect ratio | Minimum dimension stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 landscape | 640 pixels wide |
| Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 portrait | 640 pixels high |
| Podcast playlist | Use a square image | 1:1 | Not stated in the cited guidance |
These are recommendations in YouTube Help’s custom-thumbnail guidance, accessed September 29, 2026; the page does not state a publication date. YouTube’s wording for video thumbnails is to “try to upload a thumbnail with an aspect ratio of 16:9.” Recommendations do not mean the image will appear identically on every YouTube surface: display size and cropping can vary by context.

Standard videos: 3840 × 2160 pixels
For a regular landscape video, prepare a 16:9 image. The recommended dimensions are 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high, with a minimum width of 640 pixels in YouTube’s guidance. If your editor asks for inches, set the canvas in pixels if possible; if it requires a physical unit, the PPI setting determines the corresponding inch values.
Shorts: 2160 × 3840 pixels
For a Short, YouTube recommends a portrait 9:16 image at 2160 × 3840 pixels, and specifies a minimum height of 640 pixels. Do not substitute the standard-video 16:9 dimensions simply because they are familiar from landscape videos.
Podcast playlists: square artwork
YouTube recommends a 1:1 ratio for podcast playlist thumbnails rather than the 16:9 ratio for standard videos. The cited custom-thumbnail guidance does not state a separate recommended pixel dimension for this case, so use the ratio rather than assuming the standard-video dimensions apply.
How to work out inches when you need a print size
If you need a physical print rather than a YouTube upload, divide each pixel dimension by the chosen PPI. The formula is: inches = pixels ÷ PPI. For a 3840 × 2160 image at 300 PPI, that is 12.8 × 7.2 inches. At 150 PPI, it is 25.6 × 14.4 inches.

- Start with the correct image dimensions and ratio. Use 3840 × 2160 for a standard-video thumbnail or 2160 × 3840 for a Short, following YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Choose the intended physical output size. A print’s size is a design choice; YouTube does not prescribe one.
- Set the PPI or calculate the pixel dimensions needed. To find the pixels required for a chosen print size, multiply inches by PPI. For example, a 12-inch-wide print at 300 PPI needs 3600 pixels across.
- Keep the aspect ratio intact. Resizing to a different ratio can crop or distort the image. Crop deliberately if the print format differs from the intended thumbnail ratio.
PPI metadata does not create additional image detail. Enlarging a smaller image to a larger pixel count cannot restore detail that was not captured or designed into the original. For YouTube, export a file with the recommended pixel dimensions rather than relying on an inch value embedded in image metadata.
Do not confuse thumbnail dimensions with video resolution
Numbers such as 1280 × 720 often appear in YouTube size advice, but they do not mean YouTube’s current maximum recommended thumbnail size is 1280 × 720. YouTube’s separate video-resolution guidance identifies 1280 × 720 as 720p video resolution. Its custom-thumbnail recommendation for a standard video is 3840 × 2160 pixels.
The 1280 × 720 figure also matters for YouTube’s thumbnail Test & Compare feature: YouTube recommends using the highest resolution, and says experiment thumbnails below 1280 × 720 are downscaled to 854 × 480 for the experiment. That is a test-processing threshold, not the current recommended maximum size for an uploaded standard-video thumbnail. These figures come from separate YouTube Help guidance on video resolution and thumbnail testing.
File formats, upload limits, and eligibility
YouTube lists JPG and PNG as example image formats. The stated file-size limits depend on both the upload device and thumbnail type; they are not one universal maximum.

How vertical-video thumbnails may appear on mobile
A vertical video’s 16:9 custom thumbnail may not be the image shown everywhere. YouTube cautions that on the Home, Explore, and subscription pages, it may replace a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail. The custom thumbnail remains on the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms, according to the same YouTube Help guidance.
This is why a technically correct upload may look different in different browsing contexts. If the video is vertical, review how its thumbnail appears across the surfaces YouTube identifies rather than judging it only from the upload preview.
Prepare a thumbnail file without a sizing mistake
- Identify the content type. Choose standard video, Short, or podcast playlist before setting up the canvas.
- Set dimensions in pixels. Use 3840 × 2160 for a standard video, 2160 × 3840 for a Short, or a 1:1 canvas for a podcast playlist. For the latter, the cited guidance establishes the ratio but not a specific pixel size.
- Check orientation and ratio. Landscape video uses 16:9; Shorts use 9:16; podcast playlists use 1:1.
- Export an accepted image file and check the applicable limit. JPG and PNG are examples listed by YouTube. Confirm the limit for your device and thumbnail type before uploading.
- Upload through the appropriate workflow. Custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and custom thumbnails require account verification.
- Check the display context. For vertical videos, inspect the mobile browsing surfaces where YouTube may use an auto-generated 4:5 image instead of the 16:9 custom thumbnail.

“What inch size should I enter?”
For a YouTube upload, enter the pixel dimensions and ratio. If the software requires inches, its PPI setting controls the conversion; there is no single inch value that YouTube requires.
The thumbnail looks stretched or cropped
Check that the canvas uses the intended ratio—16:9 for a standard video, 9:16 for a Short, or 1:1 for podcast playlist artwork. Avoid stretching one orientation into another. If the image is for a vertical video, remember that some mobile browsing surfaces may show an auto-generated 4:5 image instead.

The file is rejected for being too large
Check the limit for the specific combination of upload device and thumbnail type. YouTube lists 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails, 10 MB for mobile podcast thumbnails, and 50 MB for desktop video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails. Export or compress the file while preserving the required dimensions and acceptable visual quality.

Test & Compare looks lower-resolution than expected
Check the experiment source image dimensions. YouTube says experiment thumbnails below 1280 × 720 are downscaled to 854 × 480; the 1280 × 720 threshold applies to thumbnail testing and is not the current maximum recommendation for a standard-video upload.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing an image’s DPI or PPI make it sharper on YouTube?
No. PPI metadata determines the physical-size calculation for a print, but it does not add pixels or image detail. YouTube’s thumbnail guidance is expressed in pixels and aspect ratios.
Can I use a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a Short?
YouTube’s current recommendation for Shorts is 9:16. Its guidance also says a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video may be replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 image on some mobile browsing pages.
