The right method depends on whether you need an image, a document, an automated capture, or an offline archive.
Capture a full-page screenshot in Chrome DevTools
Chrome DevTools includes a full-page screenshot workflow. It is the best starting point when you want one raster image and do not want to install an extension. Chrome for Developers lists full-page screenshot capture among DevTools’ screenshot techniques. Menu wording can vary slightly between Chrome versions.
- Open the webpage in Chrome and wait until the parts you need have appeared. If the page loads images or other content only as you scroll, scroll through it first, then return to the top.
- Open DevTools: press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu: press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS. On macOS, this is the DevTools Command Menu shortcut; it is not the browser’s regular print shortcut.
- Type screenshot in the menu’s search field.
- Select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome downloads an image of the full page.
- Open the downloaded image and inspect the top, middle, and bottom. Check for missing lazy-loaded images, animation frames you did not want, sticky headers repeated or covering content, and sections that appear only after an interaction.
This produces a single image, not a PDF. If you need to preserve a specific menu, tab, or other interactive state, put the page into that state before capturing and check that the state remains visible in the result. A screenshot records what is rendered; it does not turn the page into an editable document.
Prepare long or dynamic pages before capturing
A full-page command cannot capture content that the page has not loaded or revealed. Pages may load images as they approach the viewport, update after scripts run, or require a click to show a section. Preparation matters more on these pages than the screenshot command itself.

- For lazy-loaded content: scroll down the page in sections, allowing each section to appear, then return to the top and take the full-size screenshot. Inspect the output for gaps.
- For content that appears after a delay: wait for it to render before capturing. Do not assume a blank space means the page has no content.
- For interactive sections: open the relevant accordion, menu, or tab first. A capture cannot show multiple mutually exclusive states at once; take separate captures if you need to document each one.
- For animation: wait for a stable frame when possible, and review the image for an unwanted intermediate state.
- For sticky elements: check whether a fixed header, floating button, or similar element obscures content. If the result is unsuitable, consider the PDF route or an extension with controls for fixed elements.
For a one-off capture, DevTools is usually simpler than setting up automation. For frequent captures or a repeatable process, use the command-line route below or a tool designed for automated screenshots.
Save a webpage as a PDF instead
Use Chrome’s print dialog when the useful result is a document that can be paginated, searched, and shared as pages rather than one very tall image. Open Chrome’s print dialog, choose a PDF destination, review the page preview, and save the file. The rendered print layout can differ from the live page, and interactive states may not carry over, so inspect the PDF if exact appearance matters.
For command-line PDF output, Chrome for Developers documents the --print-to-pdf flag, which saves a file named output.pdf in the current working directory. Add --no-pdf-header-footer to omit the date/time header and URL/page-number footer:

chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.com/Replace https://example.com/ with the address you want to print. The command-line options below assume that chrome resolves to the Chrome executable in your environment; if it does not, use the executable’s path. Check the output PDF to make sure its pagination and layout suit your purpose.
Automate captures with Headless Chrome
Headless Chrome can run without the usual visible browser window. Its --screenshot flag saves a file named screenshot.png in the current working directory. For example, this command sets a 1440-by-900 viewport:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 https://example.com/--window-size sets the viewport; the example is not a guarantee that the resulting image contains every screen-length of a tall page. For a full-height image, use DevTools’ full-size capture workflow unless your automated method is configured for full-page capture. If you need to capture many pages or schedule captures, test the output for your target pages before relying on a repeatable job.

Give the page time to render
Chrome’s Headless reference documents --timeout and --virtual-time-budget as timing controls. Use --timeout=5000 when the page needs time to load. For a page whose scripts update over time, --virtual-time-budget=42000 lets Chrome execute time-dependent code before capture. These example values are milliseconds; adjust them to the page rather than treating them as universal wait times.
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 --virtual-time-budget=42000 https://example.com/Waiting longer does not by itself reveal every lazy-loaded section or satisfy an interaction. For pages that reveal content on scroll, confirm that your capture method actually scrolls or otherwise loads the content before it takes the screenshot. A fixed viewport capture and a full-page capture are different requirements.

When MHTML is better than a screenshot
MHTML is a single-file archive format, not a picture of the page. Chrome’s chrome.pageCapture API can save a tab as MHTML, encapsulating the page and resources including CSS files and images. An extension using the API must declare the pageCapture permission; Chrome’s reference says the API is available from Chrome 116+. The saved file can be loaded only from the file system and in the main frame.

Choose MHTML when you want to preserve page resources for offline use rather than create a visually shareable capture. Choose PNG/JPG when the recipient needs to see the page as an image, or PDF when a paginated document is more useful.

A Chrome extension can reduce repeated DevTools steps and may offer an editor or export controls. The Chrome Web Store listing for GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture documents PNG and JPG downloads, PDF export, annotation/editor features, iframe support, and fixes for scrollbars, fixed elements, and long or dynamic pages. The listing identifies version 8.9 and an update dated September 25, 2026; extension features and store details can change, so check the live listing before installing.
Before installing any extension, read its permissions and privacy information and decide whether they are appropriate for the pages you capture. Use an extension when one-click operation or annotation is important; for an occasional capture, Chrome’s built-in DevTools route avoids adding one.

Troubleshoot a missing or unsuitable capture
- The screenshot stops at the visible viewport: In DevTools, use Capture full size screenshot, not a viewport screenshot option. In Headless Chrome,
--window-sizesets the viewport; the example command does not establish that a tall page will be captured in full. - Images or sections are missing: Scroll the page to reveal lazy-loaded content, wait for it to appear, return to the top, and capture again. If content needs a click, open it before capture.
- The image shows the wrong state: Finish the interaction that exposes the desired state before taking the screenshot. For changing content or animation, wait for a stable state and inspect the output.
- The command cannot find Chrome: The examples use
chromeas the executable name. Use the installed Chrome executable’s path if that name is not available in your command environment. - The PDF has headers or footers: Add
--no-pdf-header-footerto the Headless Chrome PDF command. - The command-line capture is too early: Add or increase a timing control such as
--timeoutor--virtual-time-budget, then inspect whether the required page content has actually rendered. - The PDF looks different from the webpage: Print output can change layout or omit interactive states. Review the PDF preview or saved file; if you need the rendered page as one image, use full-page screenshot capture.
- You need an archive but got an image: PNG/JPG does not preserve the page’s resources as an offline page. Use an MHTML workflow through an extension that declares the required permission.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
For a single manual image, DevTools has no extension-install step and no command-line setup. For a repeatable workflow, Headless Chrome moves the work into a command, but you must choose timing and output behavior that match the page. A longer wait may help scripts render content, yet does not automatically trigger scroll-dependent loading or interactive states.
