The most reliable way to print a website without pictures is to use a reader or simplified print view, then confirm the result in Print Preview. In Firefox, choose Format settings > Simplified; in Edge, clear Background graphics or print from Immersive Reader. Chrome can use Reading mode on supported pages, but it does not provide a documented, universal switch for removing every inline image. If an image still appears in preview, do not send the job until you have changed the view or selected a different method.
First, identify which kind of picture you want to remove
Web pages use images in two different ways. A background graphic is part of the page’s styling, such as a banner, texture or decorative logo behind text. An inline image is an ordinary content element, such as a product photo or news illustration. A browser option that omits backgrounds can leave inline photos untouched. Reader and simplified views are more likely to remove both pictures and surrounding clutter, but only when the site exposes a usable reading version.
Printing also uses a page-specific print layout. A page can deliberately rearrange, hide or add content for paper, so the screen and the preview are not guaranteed to match. Treat the preview as the final authority before printing.

Firefox: use Simplified format or Reader View
Print with the Simplified format
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Print….
- Expand More settings.
- Under Format settings, select Simplified.
- Check the preview. Simplified format removes page clutter such as buttons, advertisements and background images when the page supports it.
- Choose the required pages, adjust scale or margins, select black-and-white where your system offers it, and choose a printer or Save to PDF.
Firefox does not offer Simplified for every page. The format controls can also be absent when a simplified version is unavailable or when Reader View was already enabled before printing. When Simplified is selected, Firefox does not let you select Print backgrounds, because those backgrounds are excluded by that format.
Print from Reader View
If a Reader View icon appears in the address bar, activate it first and then open Print. Reader View presents the article in a cleaner layout, which often removes navigation, advertising and decorative images. Availability depends on the page. Review every page in the print preview rather than assuming Reader View removed all media.

Microsoft Edge: turn off backgrounds or use Immersive Reader
Omit webpage backgrounds
- Open the page and choose Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Expand More settings.
- Clear the Background graphics checkbox.
- Inspect the preview, select only the pages you need, and print or save the result as a PDF.
Background graphics controls backgrounds; it is not a promise that ordinary inline photographs will disappear.
Use Immersive Reader for a cleaner page
When the page offers Immersive Reader in the address bar, open it and print from that view. On Windows, F9 can open Immersive Reader when the feature is available. Microsoft does not make Immersive Reader available on every website, so check the preview. This is the better Edge route when you want article text without navigation and other page furniture, rather than merely removing a background.
Print only a selected portion
Edge can print a selection. Highlight the text or images you need, right-click the selection, and choose Print. This is useful for a short passage, but it is not a general image-removal feature: selecting text can still include an image positioned inside that selection.

Google Chrome: Reading mode is conditional
Chrome’s print flow lets you choose a destination and adjust the settings shown by your operating system or printer. Chrome also offers Reading mode on supported pages. Google describes Reading mode as applying to the text shown in that mode; the available official material does not establish a universal Chrome print-dialog control that removes every inline picture.
- Open the page’s print command and expand the available settings.
- Check the preview for inline pictures and background graphics.
- If the page supports Reading mode, open that view and start printing again.
- If pictures remain, use Firefox Simplified or Edge Immersive Reader when the page supports those alternatives.
Do not rely on a Chrome setting labeled for backgrounds to remove content images. The preview, not the setting name, tells you what will reach paper.
Safari and other browsers
Exact Safari instructions vary by device and operating-system release, and a current Safari-specific reader-print workflow is not established here. Use the browser’s normal print command, inspect its preview, and look for a Reader, simplified or background-graphics control. If no such control is present, open the same page in Firefox or Edge and use the documented simplified view there. Avoid promising that a generic “hide images” preference exists in Safari.

Preview settings that matter
- Pages: print a range or selected pages instead of the entire site.
- Scale and margins: changing these can prevent clipped text after the reader view reflows the page.
- Color: choose black-and-white when your printer dialog provides it and color is unnecessary.
- Destination: use Save to PDF to inspect or share a file before committing paper and ink.
- Backgrounds: confirm the preview after changing a background option; some pages place visual content as inline elements instead.
For a long article, wait for the preview to finish rendering before judging it. Lazy-loaded content, fonts and scripts can alter pagination after the first preview appears.
Troubleshooting: when pictures still print
An inline photo remains after disabling backgrounds
The photo is probably an inline image rather than a CSS background. Switch to Firefox Simplified, Firefox Reader View or Edge Immersive Reader if the page offers one. If none is available, print only the text selection you need or save a PDF after removing unwanted content in an editor.
The simplified or reader option is missing
These views are site-dependent. Try the page’s article URL rather than a home page, wait for the page to finish loading, and reload once. If the control still does not appear, use another browser’s supported view or print a selection.

The preview differs from the screen
Web pages can define a separate print layout. Menus may disappear, columns may stack, and some content may move to another page. Adjust scale and margins, then recheck the page range before printing.
A cookie banner, newsletter box or chat widget covers the text
Dismiss the overlay before opening Print. If it cannot be dismissed, Reader or Simplified mode may omit it. A blocked overlay can otherwise be treated as ordinary page content and appear in the preview.
The page is blank or missing late-loaded text
Wait for images, fonts and article text to finish loading, then reopen Print Preview. If the site only reveals content after scrolling or interaction, scroll through the needed section before printing. Save to PDF first if you need to verify the result without wasting paper.

Only some pages contain pictures
Use the preview’s page thumbnails or range field to isolate the affected pages. Different templates within one site can use different image and print rules, so test a representative page rather than assuming the whole domain behaves identically.
