In Playwright, call locator.scrollIntoViewIfNeeded() and then locator.screenshot(). Puppeteer’s ElementHandle.screenshot() also scrolls its target into view when needed. Choose an element capture for one item, a viewport capture for the current frame, or a full-page capture for the whole scrollable document.
Choose the screenshot scope first
“Scroll an element into view” can mean either moving the browser viewport so a target is visible, or capturing the target itself as an image. Those are related but distinct jobs:
- Element screenshot: captures the selected element, rather than the whole viewport.
- Viewport screenshot: captures the visible browser area after you have positioned the page.
- Full-page screenshot: captures the full scrollable page as though it were on a very tall screen.
If the image should focus on one card, heading, or panel, use an element screenshot. If it should include surrounding content at a deliberate scroll position, scroll first and capture the viewport. If it should cover the document from top to bottom, request a full-page capture. Playwright documents these as separate capture behaviors in its Screenshots guide.
Playwright: scroll an element into view
Use a locator that identifies the target, call scrollIntoViewIfNeeded(), then take an element screenshot:

const target = page.getByText('The content to capture');
await target.scrollIntoViewIfNeeded();
await target.screenshot({ path: 'target.png' });
Playwright’s locator method waits for actionability checks and tries to scroll the element into view unless it is already completely visible, using an IntersectionObserver ratio to determine visibility. The locator screenshot method also waits for actionability and scrolls the target into view before capture. See the Playwright Locator API.
Capture the current viewport after scrolling
If the desired image includes nearby context, scroll the target into view and capture the page rather than the locator:
const target = page.getByText('The content to capture');
await target.scrollIntoViewIfNeeded();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
This captures the viewport at the resulting scroll position. It does not crop the output to the target element.
Capture the entire page
For a full-document image, use the page screenshot with fullPage: true:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
Playwright describes this as a capture of the full scrollable page, as though the page could fit on one very tall screen. It is not simply a viewport screenshot taken after scrolling to a chosen position.
Puppeteer: capture an element
Puppeteer’s ElementHandle.screenshot() scrolls the target into view if necessary and then uses Page.screenshot() to capture the element. A minimal example is:
const target = await page.$('.content-to-capture');
if (!target) {
throw new Error('Could not find .content-to-capture');
}
await target.screenshot({ path: 'target.png' });
The null check matters: page.$() returns no handle if the selector matches nothing. The screenshot behavior is documented in the Puppeteer ElementHandle.screenshot() API.
Position the viewport more precisely
Automatic scrolling is convenient when the only requirement is to make the target visible. For a specific composition—such as keeping the target near the bottom of the viewport while retaining surrounding context—scroll a known element that should appear near the bottom, or use wheel input or locator evaluation to control positioning. Playwright describes these options in its Input guide.

Use a visible anchor
Choose an element whose location gives the frame you want, then scroll that anchor into view and capture the viewport. This is often easier to maintain than hard-coding a pixel offset when layout changes, though the final framing still depends on the page’s layout and viewport size.
Use wheel input when you need incremental movement
Wheel input is useful when the exact position is best reached by controlled movement rather than jumping directly to one locator. The amount needed depends on the page and viewport; verify the resulting image rather than assuming a fixed wheel distance will work on every site.
Use locator evaluation for deliberate scrolling
When the normal scroll-into-view behavior does not produce the desired alignment, evaluate scrolling on the target or its scrollable ancestor. Playwright’s Python Locator documentation covers the locator API and notes the distinction between an element and a scrollable container. Keep the evaluation focused on the page’s actual scroll structure instead of assuming the top-level document is the only scrolling area.
Handle nested scroll containers and dynamic pages
Scroll the correct container
An element can be inside a panel that scrolls independently of the main page. Scrolling the page may not move that panel’s contents. If the target is itself a scrollable container, its element screenshot shows only the content currently scrolled into view; it does not reveal hidden internal content automatically. Scroll the container to the internal position you want before capturing. See the Playwright Python Locator API.

Wait for the content that matters
A locator being present does not guarantee the page has finished rendering the content you intend to capture. Dynamic loading, lazy images, animations, sticky headers, and asynchronous updates can change what is visible. Wait for the relevant content or state to settle before scrolling and capturing. There is no single waiting strategy that is correct for every site; choose a condition tied to the page and verify the output.
Check the result image
When the capture is used in a test or production pipeline, inspect the output at least when changing the page, selector, viewport, or scroll behavior. Confirm the target is visible, context is framed correctly, and lazy-loaded content has appeared. Browser automation can scroll the element into view, but it cannot infer the screenshot composition you intended.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot is missing the target | The selector found a different element, did not match, or the page changed before capture. | Use a stable locator, ensure it resolves to the intended target, wait for the relevant content, then scroll and capture. |
| The target is visible but the image contains too much or too little | You used a viewport capture when you wanted an element crop, or vice versa. | Use locator/element screenshot for one item; use page screenshot after scrolling for surrounding viewport context. |
| The page moved but the panel content did not | The target is inside a nested scroll container. | Scroll the container itself to the desired internal position before taking the screenshot. |
| Sticky navigation covers the target | The page’s sticky layout affects the final visible framing. | Use a different anchor or more deliberate scrolling, then inspect the viewport image and adjust the position. |
| Images or text are absent in the capture | Lazy loading or asynchronous rendering has not completed. | Wait for the content or image state relevant to the screenshot before capturing. |
| Puppeteer throws because a handle is missing | The selector matched no element and page.$() returned null. |
Check the selector and handle before calling screenshot(). |

ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot from one GET request. For a basic capture, request the target page URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters. For a page where the target is below the fold, use the service’s documented wait and capture options to prepare the page; a remote screenshot request is not a substitute for selecting a particular DOM element or guaranteeing a custom scroll position unless configured for that task.

Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
The framework documentation describes the scrolling and capture behavior, but it does not establish a general performance or reliability winner between Playwright and Puppeteer. Use the framework already maintained by your project, and choose the screenshot scope that avoids unnecessary work: an element capture for one element, a viewport capture for one frame, or full-page capture when the whole document is needed. For a hosted API, check its documented capture controls and response behavior against your use case, especially if you need a specific position or element crop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does scrolling an element into view capture the whole page?
No. Scrolling changes the visible position; use a full-page screenshot option when the output should represent the entire scrollable document.
Will an element screenshot show all content inside a scrollable panel?
No. It captures the panel’s currently scrolled content. Scroll inside that container to reveal the portion you need.
Which should I use, Playwright or Puppeteer?
Use the framework already used by your project. The cited documentation describes the relevant scrolling and screenshot behaviors but does not establish a general winner.
