Usually, no. A website running in an ordinary browser cannot reliably tell that you used your device’s screenshot controls, and there is no standard browser event that reports an operating-system screenshot to the page. Websites can observe changes such as a tab becoming hidden, but those changes have many causes and do not prove a screenshot was taken. Native Android and iOS apps have more specific operating-system notifications; those capabilities do not extend to ordinary websites.
What a website can—and cannot—know
A page runs inside a browser sandbox. It can respond to browser events and make network requests, but it does not receive a general notification whenever someone presses a system screenshot shortcut. The browser’s Page Visibility API reports whether a document is visible or hidden; it does not report screenshots. (MDN: Page Visibility API.)
A website’s server may record requests, page navigation, or other activity that the site itself generated. That is different from seeing the image captured outside the page. A server log cannot establish that a screenshot was saved, what it contained, or whether the user took one.
Why blur or visibility events are not proof
A page may receive visibilitychange when someone switches tabs, minimizes a window, or the page becomes occluded. Focus and blur changes can likewise occur for reasons unrelated to screenshots. These signals may help a site pause background work, but treating them as screenshot detection would produce false conclusions.

Browser and device controls are different
On a website, the browser mediates what page scripts can observe. In a native mobile app, the operating system can provide app-specific screenshot or screen-capture notifications. That distinction explains why an app may react to a screenshot while the same service opened in Chrome or Safari cannot reliably do so.
Can Chrome or another browser detect a screenshot?
No standard browser API tells a website that a user took a normal operating-system screenshot. Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and other browsers do not turn Page Visibility or focus events into proof that a screenshot occurred. A browser extension or operating-system feature is a separate matter; it should not be confused with what an ordinary web page can detect.
What Page Visibility actually reports
The Page Visibility API exposes whether a document is currently visible. A page can listen for the event like this:
document.addEventListener("visibilitychange", () => {
if (document.visibilityState === "hidden") {
// The page is hidden; this does not mean a screenshot was taken.
pauseBackgroundWork();
} else {
resumeBackgroundWork();
}
});
This is useful for efficiency—for example, pausing a game or video-related work while a tab is in the background. It cannot reliably distinguish a screenshot from a tab switch, minimizing the browser, or another visibility change. Avoid using it to make security or enforcement decisions about whether a screenshot was taken.

Does screen sharing let a website detect screenshots?
No. navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() requests permission to receive a live stream of a user-selected tab, window, or display. It is a user-consented screen-sharing or recording mechanism, not a silent screenshot detector. The browser requires a secure context and recent user interaction, and the user must choose a surface. (MDN: getDisplayMedia(); W3C: Screen Capture specification.)
A minimal example, when a site genuinely needs a screen-sharing stream, is:

async function requestScreenShare() {
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
video: true,
audio: false
});
// Use the stream only for the purpose explained to the user.
return stream;
}
shareButton.addEventListener("click", async () => {
try {
const stream = await requestScreenShare();
// Attach stream to a preview or an explicitly disclosed workflow.
} catch (error) {
// The user may deny permission, or the request may be unavailable.
console.error("Screen sharing was not started", error);
}
});
Call it in response to a user action such as a button click. Do not describe the resulting stream as evidence of a screenshot: it only exists after the browser’s permission flow and surface selection, and it represents an ongoing capture stream.
Can websites block screenshots?
An ordinary website cannot reliably prevent someone from using operating-system or device capture controls. It may restrict content within its own page or use access controls, but those measures do not turn the page into a system-level screenshot blocker. A user may also photograph a display with another device, which software on the page cannot prevent.

What happens in native Android apps?
Android 14 introduced a privacy-preserving screenshot-detection API for apps. An app declares android.permission.DETECT_SCREEN_CAPTURE and registers a callback for an activity. On supported hardware-button screenshots, the callback can notify the app; Android also shows a system notice. The callback does not provide the screenshot image. (Android Developers: Screenshot detection.)
This is a native Android app capability, not a web feature available to a page displayed in Chrome. It is also specifically about supported screenshot actions, not proof that every possible way of copying screen content has been detected.
Android screenshot prevention with FLAG_SECURE
A native app can set the FLAG_SECURE window flag to keep an activity out of screenshots and non-secure displays. Android documents it as a prevention measure, but its fraud-prevention guidance reports about 70% reliability on Android 11 (API 30) and lower. That figure applies to those older Android versions and is not a universal success rate across current devices. Treat the flag as a mitigation with platform limits, not an absolute guarantee. (Android Developers: Fraud prevention guidance.)

What happens in native iPhone and iPad apps?
Apple’s UIKit provides UIApplication.userDidTakeScreenshotNotification, which posts after a person takes a screenshot on the device. Apple says this notification has no userInfo dictionary. It is a notification for a native app; it is not a browser event that an ordinary website can subscribe to. (Apple Developer Documentation: userDidTakeScreenshotNotification.)
Apple separately provides UIScreen.capturedDidChangeNotification for changes in capture status, such as recording, mirroring, AirPlay, or other ways a screen is cloned to another destination. This concerns capture status, not a notification that a website can use to identify a screenshot. (Apple Developer Documentation: capturedDidChangeNotification.)
Detection, prevention, and consent compared
| Situation | What is available | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary website in a browser | Visibility and focus signals; no standard OS-screenshot event | Whether a screenshot was taken or saved |
| Website requesting display capture | A user-selected screen, window, or tab stream after interaction and permission | Silent screenshot detection |
| Native Android app | Android 14 screenshot callback for supported hardware-button captures; FLAG_SECURE mitigation |
A copy-proof guarantee or delivery of the screenshot image to the callback |
| Native Apple app | UIKit notification after a screenshot and a separate screen-capture status notification | A browser API available to a website |
How developers should handle screenshot-sensitive content
- Do not claim detection from blur or visibility. Use those events for lifecycle and performance behavior, not as evidence of a screenshot.
- Explain the purpose before requesting screen capture.
getDisplayMedia()is an explicit permission flow for streaming a selected surface. - Use native platform controls only in the relevant app. Android’s detection callback and secure-window flag, and Apple’s UIKit notifications, are not transferable to ordinary web pages.
- Design as though visible content can be copied. If exposure matters, consider what information is displayed, who can access it, and how access should be limited; no screenshot signal makes displayed information impossible to reproduce.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a web page for testing, documentation, or an AI workflow—not detection of a visitor’s screenshot—ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns an image or PDF, rather than trying to observe a user’s device capture.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you need and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
Common misconceptions and troubleshooting
“The page blurred when I took a screenshot, so it detected it.”
A blur or focus event is ambiguous. It may coincide with a shortcut or window transition, but it does not identify the cause. A page that reacts to it cannot reliably conclude that a screenshot happened.
“The site asked for screen permission, so it can see every screenshot.”
Permission for getDisplayMedia() starts a user-selected stream. If the request fails, confirm that the page is served in a secure context, initiate it from a recent user action, and allow the browser’s selection prompt. If permission is denied or unavailable, the site does not get that stream. This mechanism still does not silently report OS screenshots.

“The Android callback gives the app the captured image.”
It does not: Android’s documented screenshot-detection callback notifies the app about a supported screenshot action, but does not supply the image. It is available to native Android apps configured for the API, not to a website.

“FLAG_SECURE means nobody can copy the screen.”
The flag is an app-level mitigation for screenshots and non-secure displays. It cannot prevent every external way of reproducing visible content, and Android documents reduced reliability on Android 11 and lower.
Frequently asked questions
Can a website tell if I screenshot on an iPhone or Android phone?
An ordinary website cannot reliably detect the operating system’s screenshot action on either platform. Native apps have platform-specific APIs that do not become available to a page merely because it is open in a mobile browser.
Can a website know whether I saved the screenshot?
Not through a standard browser screenshot event. A page may learn about its own activity, such as navigation or requests, but that does not show whether an external screenshot was saved or shared.
Does private or incognito browsing change screenshot detection?
Private browsing does not give an ordinary web page a screenshot event. It changes aspects of local browsing data handling, not the browser sandbox boundary described above.
